"Am I? You're the one who's making a big deal about one comment I made. I didn't think it was such a big deal. Obviously I was wrong."
Derek wasn't even sure what they were discussing anymore. He hadn't even said so many words to start this discussion. "Fine, I'm a jerk for not appreciating what you planned, even though I never asked for any of it, never wanted any of it, and this? This is like a security nightmare that's driving me insane without my rifle. I'm the jerk for not saying anything and going along with everything. I must be really horrible."
He was tempted to let her go, but he wouldn't let her walk out alone. "I'll walk with you," he said, before getting up and walking after her, because he would make sure she got inside safely. "There is a difference between not caring and being able to clamp down on that care and making sure that it doesn't affect you. I can't let anything affect me, so yes, I'm getting ready to go home. I'm not asking anyone to do things my way, not you, not John, not Brian, but I can't afford to be weak, because I have a job to do. And let's make something really clear, families stick together no matter what. Neither one of us are willing to do that for each other, so let's not talk about family, okay?"
Stopping, he turned to her. "I'd like to know exactly what I've done to reject what you've planned today. Other than going along. Never mind, no need to answer that."
