Re: Robert and his trips
"Oh, don't be an idiot," Savannah said, chuckling, because while she believed in hugs and kisses, she also believed in not letting people wallow. "Of course she can't take all of your blood, because you being dead wouldn't really help Travis much. Of course, if you were trying for that exaggeration that I dislike so much, she still can't," she added, a lot more serious. You need to be in top shape when he wakes up. He needs to be able to rely on you, and he can't do that if you're too weak and he needs to take care of you."
Robert snorted as he ate. "You're so subtle."
Savannah rolled her eyes. "I wasn't trying to be subtle. The rest of his family can do subtle. With me, he gets what happens in our family: blunt honesty that helps."
"That because we don't give a shit about what people think of us," Robert answered.
"Or because we know that in the end, the truth makes everyone's life easier." She put all the bags of juice on the table and then patted Thomas's back. "For example, the truth is that if Robert doesn't eat, he's not going to be able to take us anywhere, and that's why we stopped and made him a sandwich."
Robert hated that people knew about his limitations, but didn't say anything. Instead he concentrated on the truth. "You can't be in the room with him. You know that, right? It's barely sterile, and you... you can't be in there, Thomas. Stay with Savannah. Troy and I will be there. If anything happens, anything at all, I'll come and get you." He smiled a little. "It's the one good thing about being friends with this family. We go the extra mile for the people we care about, and she's basically adopted you, so really, I have no choice."
