Summary: Claudia and Helena catch up.
H.G. was here!
Claudia shouldn't be stoked about it because it meant that someone else had been thrown into this mess of a world. Still, it was great to have someone who actually knew her here, someone she didn't have to impress or pretend or keep secrets from. She had friends here, but it wasn't the same, especially after Eric had died.
After the quick conference with Vance, John, and Derek, and after Claudia giving sworn testimony that Helena wouldn't be found in this dimension and that they probably didn't want her saying any more, Claudia snatched up Helena and brought her back to the house she shared with Bud, Elaine, and Margaret.
In the bedroom behind closed doors, with the laptop blaring music (not that laptops blared too well) as a safety precaution, Claudia sat cross-legged on her bed facing Helena, who'd taken a seat beside her. "So tell me what's been going on at home? Does everyone miss me? Of course they do - I'm me."
Helena smiled. While she and Claudia hadn't been as close as she had been with Myka, Helena was fond of Claudia and her enthusiasm in anything. "Yes, you are missed. Last I had heard, in between cases the search for the artifact that had caused your disappearance and Ms. Donovan's appearance would continue. Have you been able to ascertain the artifact and its origins?"
Claudia shook her head. "Not an artifact; they don't exist here. We can't purple goo our way out of this one. This one is all on this dimension's crazy scientists and their crazy machine. Which we've rebuilt and plan to use, thus making us just as crazy. But hopefully it'll get us back to where we belong at some point, after we rescue the Away Team."
Helena had been told about the government, the scientists, and the rifts, but she had wanted to make certain that was truly the case. She believed Claudia when she said so. "Very well. Should I make an offer of my assistance with the science?"
"You could talk to Vance, but I think they already got everything done, or close to it. We've been doing survival training for a bunch of months now, in anticipation of us heading to the Land of the Lost. I'll teach you what I was taught by John - who you've met - about how and what to pack in your bag, which you'll probably get either later today or tomorrow." Claudia thought they kept extra on hand in case of new arrivals, but if not they had them from those who'd died. Something she so didn't want to think about and pushed aside.
Claudia launched into a rundown of the training, the chain of command, and the partner thing both 'on the job' and off. The danger of this government and a potential attack had been drilled into her, but the only bad thing she'd seen happen was the rift opening on the island. "Which is why we bring our bags everywhere and are always armed. Real guns, not teslas. Handguns and rifles."
"I see." Helena absorbed everything Claudia told her. She had one question. "And these 'superpowers' - what are they? I haven't heard of such a term, outside of politics, and I do not believe that's what is meant."
"Dude, I thought you'd be up on pop culture by now. X-Men, Superman, Spider-man - ring any bells?" Claudia said. "They're all superheroes who have superpowers. They have their own comic books, movies, and TV shows."
Helena shook her head, bemused. "Then I'm afraid I haven't heard of these people, as I dislike television and rarely go to the pictures."
"That's just sad. I mourn for our elderly today." Claudia grinned. She dug into her pocket for the packet of seeds she carried with her, for practicing on the sly. She unfolded the packet, poured out one seed, and closed up the packet again. Holding the seed in her open palm, she told Helena, "Watch this."
Concentrating, Claudia coaxed the seed to sprout roots. It wasn't fast or spectacular, but two tendrils emerged from the seed. When they were visible enough, she stopped. "Voila! A superpower in action."
Helena accepted the seed from Claudia and studied it with wonder. "You caused the roots to sprout?"
Claudia nodded. "Yeppers. The power I got is to manipulate plants. I can make them grow or die, and I've been working on making them move and do that." She indicated to the seed. "Nearly everyone here has a power, and those that don't will probably get one at some point. It has something to do with the rift that popped us to this dimension."
"Astounding," Helena said. She was used to the remarkable and the seemingly unbelievable due to the artifacts. However, no artifact was in use, nor science. It was, indeed, astounding.
"Yeah, it's pretty neat," Claudia agreed. She showed Helena her lightly tinted thumb. "The side effects aren't always good when your power develops. Some people get sick, some people get really sensitive to things. My thumb turned really, really green. It's faded now, but before it was such a fashion don't."
It was an interesting phenomenon, one that Helena wouldn't mind learning more about, but questioning Claudia for more detail resulted in a shrug. "Maura might know how it works, or Vance, but I just go with it being another fact of life living in this world. Now, tell me more about home. How's Jinksy? His metronome had better still be ticking."
