Where: Savannah's house
When: Saturday, April 20, 2013
Summary: The last of the kids is baptized

They had a simple ceremony. Brian and Maura stood in lieu of Derek and Emily. Brian was even polite to the priest, possibly because he was sixty and Brian wasn't attracted. Either way, Savannah counted her blessings that everything went well.

At home, things were a lot more relaxed. She had made food for everyone, more than enough in fact. There were kids playing in a corner, four dogs running around, and the weirdest guest list. It was her typical party.

Marty left Savannah to hold court with Jamie. She wanted pictures with various people and after the first few, Marty opted to make the rounds of those gathered. After checking on the kids and do-si-doing around the dogs, he grabbed a beer and a glass of wine and made his way over to where Douglas was standing alone, Maura and Thomas having been shanghaied for a couple pictures with Savannah and the baby. Grinning, Marty held out the glass of wine. "Noticed you were running on empty and thought I'd bring you a refill."

Cracking open his beer, he took a bare sip. "Your brother's arm seems to be healing quickly. I'll bet you'll be glad when he can rejoin us in training and you're not stuck with just me and Travis," he teased lightly. Marty refused to treat either brother like they were 'different' when it came to the unit. They were his partner, his team, and Marty tried to treat them like he would any other. He was well aware of who they were and where they came from, the difficulties that presented in integrating with the team. And he tried to make those difficulties a little easier, make them a part of the unit, even if they were still somewhat distanced from the team as a whole. But, the unit was just that, a unit of four guys who had to rely on each other to have their backs regardless of where they came from. So, he teased Douglas and Thomas in the same way he would Travis. "Thank you for coming, by the way. Savannah and I are glad you're here."

Oh, Doug was rarely running on empty. It was just that he preferred to do his drinking away from people like this, because no matter what Savannah said, they weren't friends, they certainly weren't family, and he was sure that a few of them would be amused to see them fall. Still he took the glass with a smile, because how many political found raisers had he done? "Thank you, but you didn't have to." He had tasted the wine. He really didn't have to, not unless Doug was so drunk as to forget what good wine tasted like.

Doug chuckled. "You'd lose that bet." If it meant that TJ was home and safe, he'd rather be stuck with anyone. In fact, he'd be really glad if the injury were permanent and TJ wouldn't have to return to the field, but he doubted anyone, his brother included, would appreciate the bet. "You two are so fascinating that I want all of you attention for me," he added with a sardonic smile.

The last part was pure politics, though. He might have told Maura not to try for him, but if both Maura and TJ were trying for their own reasons, he knew that it would be stupid not to do what he'd always done. "No thanks necessary in this case. It is our pleasure to be here. If the company weren't enough, I still get to make fun of my brother for delivering a baby and now taking pictures with the above mentioned baby. As you can see, I couldn't possibly refuse the invitation." Except that was the biggest lie, because he would have been happy to stay home and make fun of TJ when he finally heard the story of the pictures. "You shouldn't have to play host, though. I know how these affairs go, but it's unnecessary. You should spend time with your children. In the long run, it'll be more important than the social niceties." He might not have kids, but he and TJ were the result of parents who spent too much time playing the hosts and not enough with their children.

"No, I'm pretty sure there's a cosmic law out there that says part of having your partner's back means making sure he has alcohol when forced to deal with your family, especially a family like this one." Marty started to laugh, but it turned into a snort rather quickly. "Yes, I can see just how fascinating we are. Given the chance to socialize and observe us in our natural habitat, you're so fascinated you're doing a good job of imitating G holding up the wall. But, I guess it's a good thing I didn't put money on that bet. And you can have all that attention at the club on Monday," he finished with a smirk.

Marty seriously doubted there was any pleasure in being there for Douglas. He did the work and Marty didn't have any problems taking him out into the field. But, this was not a pleasure for his partner. Taking another tiny sip from his beer, Marty shook his head. "I'm not playing host, Douglas. I'm talking to my partner." Glancing over at the girls, he smiled softly...and then laughed outright when Savannah had to go over and stop the kids from riding the poor dogs. "I spend time with my kids, as much as I can, and more than my folks ever spent with me. And I'll spend more time with them at this party, and telling bedtime stories tonight. But, I'm not a host here. I'm talking to someone I like. Someone who talks back in actual words instead of adorable giggles or tragic pouts that have Daddy wrapped around their little fingers."

Nope, not too proud to admit that. Marty was being forced to learn to be more disciplinarian with the team. But, he girls definitely had him wrapped around their little fingers. Just like their mother.

"Besides, if I didn't talk to you, I wouldn't know you're enjoying teasing Thomas about the pictures and therefore couldn't offer to give you a copy for posterity," he added with a grin.

"No, I meant it. You shouldn't have, really," he repeated just after taking a sip of the wine. "If you truly want to supply alcohol, a 2007 Gaja Barbaresco or a 2005 Bodegas Roda Cirsion would be appreciated, and of course you never go wrong with a single malt. Chile is producing some high quality reds. Argentina has well, although Chile has a much wider range with flavors ranging from a woody taste to a much fruity one. It was one of the perks of running State. We might not know in what part of the world we were on any given day, or hour, but we always had the best wines."

Doug snorted. "I never said your family was fascinating, but that I found you and Travis fascinating. However, you can ignore what I said and concentrate on each other on Monday. I can sip more red wine and keep TJ company. I wouldn't want him to feel lonely after all."

He followed Deeks' gaze and he was truly amused to see TJ standing there, alone, with a kid. He took out his cell and took a picture, because this was a moment to be used for ages. "I could ramble on and use monosyllabic words if it gets me out of training," he said, smirking. "I don't know about giggles, adorable or not." He wasn't even trying to get out of training, but it was easier to joke about that than discussing the rest, because it would touch on things that were a little too personal.

"That's all right. I'm quite capable of taking pictures, but the offer is appreciated nevertheless." Doug used to be really good at this, at the political meetings, photo ops and fund raisers, but all of the topics of conversations, carefully vetted for each event, were irrelevant here, and he was left staring at his glass. "I'm sorry, but what exactly does normal people talk about?" he asked with a frown. "Because I seem to be at a loss for interesting subjects to discuss." And no, children were not an interesting topic of discussion unless you needed the women's votes, and then you suffer through those meetings.

Chuckling, Marty took an actual swig from his beer this time. "That bad by comparison, huh? Well, as I'm pretty sure without knowing anything about them, that everything you just mentioned is out of my price range, I can skip the wine and offer beer instead," he said with a wink. Not that there was a lot of alcohol in the house for them at all. They had beers for the family because most of them drank beer when they 'relaxed'. They occasionally had wine for really special occasions. Queen and Merlyn might have something, but Marty didn't know offhand. He'd never been a big drinker because of his dad, occasionally hitting a bar when the day had truly sucked but never drinking heavily. "Unless you're into the rare microbrews that G was, in which case, I don't think we have those around by this point."

Marty shook his head. "And I only meant you could be talking to the two of us and you're still over here with the wall," he clarified with a good-natured shrug. "But, you're out of luck on Monday." Being off duty with Savannah might drive Thomas to seek out lonely. Smirking at the photo op, Marty didn't envy Travis when Thomas found out about that picture. "Why would giggling and monosyllabic words get you out of training? We'd just train you the way we're training the kids. Hide and seek and baby aerobics with Savannah. Books an CD from Dom, math and science and about a dozen languages. Classical music and Jazz from Sean."

Raising an eyebrow, he shrugged. "When I find some normal people I'll let you know? But, if you mean people not Hammonds -- and I don't say that disparagingly, but because your family is from a very different class than most of the rest of us -- it's really individual." Marty saw no reason not to treat that like a serious question. It was one of those things that made it difficult for the brothers to find their feet in the team. "Just in my family we have people who like to talk about music, history, literature, physics, comic books, sports, politics, military strategy. We talk about ourselves to a degree, usually anecdotes or stories the others know of our hilarious misdeeds. Sometimes philosophy or religion sneaks in. Really, we just talk about whatever interests each other or is important to each other. Like just now, I brought up your brother because I know he's important to you and I'm here to help if you guys need it while he's injured. But, I keep it light and let you steer the conversation where you want in that regard because I've worked with both of you long enough to know you value your privacy, which is actually pretty common in this family. So, I'm used to it."

"They are not that expensive," Doug said. "About two hundred a bottle, I believe. The Chilean are about half that price. I must say that this wine has an ... interesting flavor," he said, smiling, "but no, I can't say that I'm interested in American beer, rare or not. I'll take commercial European beer, though." The alcohol content of some of the dark European beers was the same as wine. and they had a much better taste than a Bud. Doug would have shivered at the thought if he weren't too well trained. "I'm sure Tommy had a pretty extensive wine cellar in his house. His father is extremely rich and enjoys the good things in life." The campaign had benefited substantially from Merlyn's finances.

"I can observe better from afar. I get the larger picture instead of focusing on the minutia that could lead you to make the wrong conclusion for failure to absorb all the details," he said calmly. "This is how fascinating you are. I prefer to look from here to see everything." He went to the table and put the glass down, before returning to his spot. "And spending time looking from afar, I can tall you my conclusion. You're all insane." Here he thought that his parents had faults as parents, but training children from such a young age was border line abuse. However, he didn't think that his opinion on the matter would be appreciated or even be relevant. They weren't his children.

Doug stared at Deeks like he'd lost his mind as he went on to explain what people discussed. "So you spend your time discussing topics that have no relevance to our lives, aren't part of our history because of different dimension or are work. That's-" And then TJ wondered why he didn't talk to people. He had no interest in half of those subjects except for political reasons and the only politics that mattered had disappeared Who was he kidding? He lived and breathed politics, his politics and not this dimension's federal version, or even the smaller one within the team. "TJ will be fine," he finally said, falling back on things that he knew how to deal with, and of course that little reminder that he was sharing about his own brother made sure that he stopped doing that too. "We will let you know if we need anything, other than a maid, a cook, a personal driver, a private plane and Secret Service protection. Other than that, we're fine, but thank you for asking."

"To be honest, I'm not sure what G was drinking. Something imported." Marty shrugged. "But, I'm not much of a drinker of anything, one beer at a party is about my limit. I guess I'll have to get you to consult on drink selections for the next party...possibly not two hundred dollar bottles if it's a large gathering, though," he added with a chuckle. He had no problem imagining Merlyn's extensive wine cellar. The price tag on most of it would probably make Marty's heart stop. But then, Marty was supposed to have been the one to bring more money and prestige to the family and he's chosen to be a cop instead of the fancy lawyer. So, it wasn't surprising he was unfamiliar with having that kind of money to drop on wine.

Still, he laughed at Douglas' conclusion. "And you don't even know the half of it. We're comfortable in our insanity. It keeps us sane in a strange way."

And speaking of children, Marty had seen Liam teleport himself over to Daddy. So, he wasn't surprised when Robert arrived just then and turned Jamie Ray over to Marty's care. "I think Liam just knew that Jamie wanted his daddy," he told the older man with a grin. "It's kid-code. They all use it to plot mischief against their parents."

In another two or three months, as the baby's brain functions began fully developing, Marty would probably have to start wondering if his son really was getting the other kids to do things for him. Who knew how a baby with Marty's power would grow into it. But, for now, they didn't have to worry. "What do you say?" he asked the baby, who simply blinked up at him. "You're going to be the mischief maker who doesn't know his own courage just like both of the men you're named for, aren't you?"

Kissing his son's forehead gently, Marty settled him more comfortably in the crook of his arm before turning his attention back to Douglas. "I'm sure your brother will be fine. He's a stronger man than I think he even realizes himself. Just like you are. But, that's not a political offer or a polite society offer. I'm your partner, Douglas. I'm here to have your back, period. I know you've lived with Travis long enough to know what 'partner' means to a cop. But, I get it. You don't trust me, don't understand me, probably don't like me much, and don't really believe that I'll have your back when it matters. And that's fine. I'm still going to be here whether you trust me to be or not.

"And in the meantime, yes, normal people talk about all of that because those things are what make us who we are. Travis and I swap stories from the job not because it's relevant to our situation, although some things might be considering how much undercover work we've both done. But, we do it because it's something we share, a connection to another human being who gets where we've been and who we've been, what we've had to do to get there. Sean could no more stop talking about music than Harley could learn to do long division. It's too intrinsic to who he is. He cares about people and uses his gift of music to make them happy in the best way he can. His music makes the rest of us smile and forget how much things suck for a little while. John talks about computers and philosophy and half of what he says goes over the heads of everyone else in the room except for a few. But, it gets him excited, makes him come alive in a way that's reassuring for the rest of us because if a kid who has lived the life we all suspect he's lived can still be excited by life, then there's hope for the rest of us and for our kids who are going to have to live a similar life whether we want them to or not.

"When you're ready to really talk to us, or me, -- and, yes, I'm saying when instead of if because I'm that much of an optimist -- the floor's open for whatever you want or need to talk about as well. No judgement. No criticism. There may be differing opinions, but it doesn't mean anything other than we disagree because we think differently. Door's always open to you." Marty smirked, having reached the limit of his own seriousness. "Unless there's a sock on the knob, in which case I have to clear it with the wife first before seeing if there's an exhibitionist kink there. Or something. Maybe not a sock."

"You can find decent wine for less. In fact, you can find pretty good substitutes for about a forth of that price. Very few would be able to tell the difference... well all right, with Merlyn, Queen, my family and the Director, you might have an unusual high percentage, but it'd still be pretty good wine," Doug explained, because he had no problem discussion wine, just like he was fine watching and ignoring all the comments about the children, at least until he compared Jamie Ray to TJ. "He's going to keep his sisters busy if he's like TJ," he said with a snort.

"TJ is who he is," he said, somewhat diplomatically, but he wasn't about the explain his brother to Deeks. "Normal people make secret deal while planning on how to get out of them, and never talk about it, because secrets stay secrets only if you don't talk about them. The other topics of discussion are taken from the list of things that interest any given group, tailored to get a desired response. The point is never to know or understand what people say, but know enough to answer so it looks like you understand," he said with a shrug. You learned what the people were talking about and after that and the political information, there wasn't room for much else. This was why he knew who Justin Fucking Bieber was, or for that matter who Maura was, before even coming here, but hadn't read a book in ages, but he knew what to say if people mentioned sparkling vampires.

"You are wrong about trusting you to have my back. I grew up with the Secret Service. TJ got out of it, but working with my mother ensured that I was around them all the time. I trust people to take a bullet for me." He wished everything were that simple. "I don't dislike you, but the fact that we work together doesn't make us friends. We're colleagues. Contrary to what everyone seems to think, you are not friends with your colleagues. Travis is different, not because we work together, but because TJ decided that he wanted to be with him."

"Like I said, I'll have to get you to consult." Chuckling, Marty finished off his beer and tucked his pinky under Jamie's curled fingers to let the baby play. He was never really sure if babies were really grabbing for fingers to play or if they just didn't notice adults sticking fingers in their hands. Still he laughed. "He's going to keep his sisters busy if he's like Ray, too. We didn't name him after docile and biddable men, did we? Ray is my best friend," he explained, though he doubted Douglas cared. "We grew up together. I was an only child, so Ray was like a brother to me. Close as I could get, at least. His life hasn't always been, shall we say, straight and narrow and I don't mean his sexuality? But, we've always had each others' backs when it counted."

Marty sighed inwardly. "No offense, but that's only normal in your world. Not the dimension you come from, either. Most people, the average Joe just working to make a living and take care of his shit isn't thinking about any of that. Then again, this family isn't really normal, either. Even if you take away the unconventional way we came together. The best undercover agent there is, a SEAL, a cheerleader, LAPD, NYPD turned Federal agent, An Air Force pilot from the upper class, a Juilliard student, a basketball star, a genius turned agent, a Marine. Anyway, I'm from L.A. What would I know about normal?" he added with a grin. "We're all either actors or crazy beach bums out here...man, I miss the beach."

Shaking his head, he looked at Douglas in silence for a moment. "No, that's not the same thing. Having your back and taking a bullet aren't the same thing at all. Sure, I would if I had to. But, it's more than that. It's things like leaving that door open for when you want to talk. It's looking after Thomas for you if, for any reason, we were all separated. It's what Thomas did for Savannah in helping her bring our son into this world and talking her out of rash actions that could have gotten both of them hurt. It's making sure the three of you had a direct line to someone who could and would help if you ran into problems on your own in Pittsburgh. It's Travis coming back here when we needed him and you having your brother's back by coming back with them. It's not giving up on you one day opening up just a little, not because I need you to talk but because someday you're going to need to talk to someone who isn't family and doesn't put that family name ahead of your well being." Marty snorted. "I'll let you in on a little known fact, but I wasn't friends with any of my colleagues at LAPD. In fact, I was pretty universally despised by the other detectives. But, working with NCIS, I learned a different truth. When you're part of a team, it's more than simple work colleagues. Those are the people who really will be there for you through everything. It's not friends and it's not family, but something that takes the best of both and throws in that willingness to take a bullet for you."

"Why would you do that?" Doug asked with a frown. "If you want him to live up to a reputation, why not pick people who mean something? Presidents, scientists, people who've made a real contribution to the world." He didn't plan to have children, but if he did, he certainly wouldn't call them after anyone in the family. In fact, they had even had this discussion with Susan. "I was talking to a journalist about this once, and she asked me what I'd call my very hypothetical future kids and there was only one answer possible.' He smiled at the memory. "When I told her that our family is so tied to the country, she guessed without me even saying it. George for Washington and John for Kennedy."

Doug shrugged. "It's normal in all dimensions if you're in politics, or in business, or in many upper class section of life. My goal was never to become the average Joe." His goal was to be the President of the United States. "I... I don't think I've ever been to the beach. Unless there was some political reason. By the time Dad was out of the White House, I had other commitments, and it never occurred to me. I'm pretty sure that Florida was the first time that counted for pleasure."

He was not going to argue with the rest, because it sounded too much like Savannah, and next came the Kumbaya and Doug didn't have the energy to have another to with this. "There is a difference between helping people when in a crises, something that even my parents would do, regardless what people might think and the rest. Also I didn't have my brother's back. He's my brother and I didn't come for them, but for him." He liked Travis and TJ might consider him family, but he'd never really be family as far as Doug was concerned. Then again, he didn't think Anne had ever really been family and they were married. "How about I won't need someone to talk to? That sounds like a much better outcome.

Marty didn't miss the smile, but he held his tongue. Curiosity didn't just kill cats, sometimes it blew up in undercover detectives' faces. "We did name him after people who mean something, though, people who mean something to us. The world's pretty fickle and if he wants that for himself and the situation allows for him to have that, we wouldn't stop him. But, the one things he's always going to have in this life is his family's love. We'd rather give him names of people we care about and who are important to us, to show him how important he is to us." Marty smiled. "We named him after Thomas because, addictions aside, there are a lot worse men he could emulate and very few who would do what he did to help Savannah when they didn't even like each other and he's not a cop or an agent who chose to rescue people for a living. He showed a strength and courage that impressed us both. And that's saying something when you consider Savannah holds everyone up against the measuring stick of men like G and Sam. And Ray is the best friend a man could ever have. Even on opposite sides of the law, there isn't anything we wouldn't do for each other and if it wasn't for him, I quite probably would never have lived to see high school. If Jamie can grow up to be like either one of them, I'll be a very proud father."

There was no pushing on the normality or lack thereof in politics vs. the average Joe. Instead, he cocked his head to the side with a look of mock horror. "And here we've had you living in the land of sun and surf for almost four months. That's just something we're going to have to rectify." Marty could talk to Vance. If they could go to Disneyland, they could find a day to go to the beach. Marty had told Claudia he'd see about surfing anyway. "Florida is nice and all. But, there's absolutely no surf there. Tragically disappointing. We'll have to take you to Santa Barbara. Lay around on the beach and relax in the sun. The surfers among us can enjoy some of the best waves on the West Coast."

Sighing, Marty shook his head. "It might sound like a much better outcome, but it's really unlikely. I won't push you, though. If you're right and you never need someone to talk to, then it's all good. But, if you do...the door's open. There's no expiration date on this except whenever God decides it's time to punch my ticket."

Only the fact that he wouldn't say anything negative about his brother kept hm from pointing out that aspiring to be like George Washington or John Kennedy was nothing like aspiring to be a junkie like TJ or a criminal like this Ray, regardless of what other qualities they might possess. "Different ideas of what's important obviously. I would hope that if I stayed at home, I'd have reached the White House and so would one of my children, but since there is no risk that I'll have any at this point, then the point is moot."

And here he thought that Savannah was insane, but he had underestimate how insane her husband was. "West Coast beaches are not really known for exclusivity or even beauty. I liked my beach to come with sunbeds, waiters and very few people, but I'm perfectly happy staying by the pool and drinking."

Doug smiled. "My family has beat unlikely plenty of times in the past." Besides, they never needed to talk, because talking led to arguments, instead they could just drink, or argue, or get high in some cases. "But thanks for the offer and I seem to be monopolizing your time. You really don't have to stay with me."

Robert was sipping on a beer. He'd done the pictures without complaining too much. He was going to, but then she mentioned creating an album for Sam and G, and there was no way to say no unless he entertained the possibility that they would never find them again. Which he couldn't. Not yet.

Free of his obligations, he sat and looked around, eyes on Liam most of the time. When the kids decide to use the dogs as ponies, ripping hair in the process, he got up, but Savannah was there first, leaving Thomas with the baby. The man looked like he was holding a bag of potatoes, not sure what to do with it.

He moved closer, amused smile clear on his face. "Would you like for me to take him?" he asked, extending his arms already.

Okay, so maybe it was a nice gesture that she'd named the kid after him, but TJ still couldn't understand why he should have any particular feelings for him just because he'd been there at the birth or had his name given to him. He could be nice and let her have the pictures she wanted. That was...well, normal. Even TJ's mother had played nice with the babies on the campaign trail and saved the bitching about it for private later. Babies, photos, it could almost be a publicity stop.

Getting left holding the baby was not.

Besides, the kid was fussing and that little fist smacking into TJ's bruised chest was, oh, so not comfortable.

"Thank you." He handed the kid over to Callen with no hesitation whatsoever. TJ just wasn't a baby person. He didn't get soft and sentimental over cute kids doing 'cute' things. When the kid could walk and carry on a reasonable conversation -- by TJ's standards, not so-called adorable 'kid-speak' -- then he might take an interest.
Might. "Getting beat up by an infant is not my finest moment."

Robert snorted. "Not eager at all," he said, picking up Jamie. He felt so small now that Liam was grown up, even if Robert knew that it had taken Liam months to get this big. Still, unlike Thomas, he could comfortably hold him with an arm, rocking him until the fussing ended.

"Rocking helps, and this is nothing," he said laughing. "Now, sleeping with two toddler every night is a much worse experience, I can assure you. They beat you up while you're sleeping."

Robert wasn't one for deep conversations or heart-to-heart moments. In fact, he despised the very idea, but Savannah was making some sort of statement with the name and invitation, and Robert knew that it'd be wise to at least try and be friendly. "How are you feeling? You know if you get tired and decide to leave early, no one can blame you. With Savannah, lunch tends to become dinner and dessert, and now that she's decided that you're family, you might want that out.. at least while you have the chance."

"Right now, I'm doing well enough at hurting myself in my sleep without the help of toddlers." Too many times he'd turn over in his sleep and pull something in his shoulder, or he'd shift and end up putting Travis' arm right over the worst of the bruises on his chest. Or he'd want to get closer and his bruised hip would smack into Travis' hip. "They never tell you in the PSAs that if you really are in a crash, you'll spend the week after wishing the seatbelt hadn't done it's job quite so well."

He wasn't getting tired so much as sore, even when he tried to just play some calming melodies at his piano. Too much reaching or stretching or all of those things he wasn't supposed to do by Maura's orders. "I'm mostly fine, though. Maura's letting me start working out again, carefully, on Monday."

TJ watched Callen with the baby and was surprised when he stopped fussing rather quickly. But, then, from what TJ had seen, the man was a pretty attentive father. At least outwardly. What he was like when the rest of them weren't watching was anybody's guess. But, that was true of most people, TJ assumed. Appearances were usually deceiving. Glancing around, he shrugged...then regretted it, even if he didn't show it. "We can't stay for dinner anyway because we're expected at my mother's for dinner. But, I wouldn't make Travis leave early even if that wasn't the case."

"Would you? Because you'd be dead if it hadn't." Robert was suddenly thrown back to the Air Force and new pilots complaining about exercises gone wrong, never realizing how different things would be in a war zone. "If it makes you feel better, they are much worse on planes, especial at Mach +2. Ejecting from that cockpit and opening that parachutes will leave you bruised for a while."

He nodded. "That's good." Looking at the way Thomas was moving and listening to what he was saying, Robert thought that it was anything but good if the Doctor was clearing him for training. Then again Robert didn't had much faith on doctors, but this would have gone very differently with G around, but if they had G, the Hammond brothers might still be on vacation. "I'm sure you and Savannah can start training together and ease back into things." Or maybe she might be convinced to go as slow as he went.

Robert grazed the baby's check with a finger, without even thinking, while he watched the younger man, before laughing. "I've seen Travis with the kids. Between him and Savannah, you'll be spending a lot of time with us." He nodded toward the coach. "Why don't we sit down? It's more comfortable," he said, raising the baby a little, although he could have stayed like this for a much longer time. It was probably better if Thomas would sit down, and Robert didn't know him enough to know how well he responded to having his weaknesses pointed out. "Don't worry. There are enough guns and security measures in this house that you're safer than you'd be in the White House. We come out of the Sam and G's school of paranoia." He didn't have to look to know that every point of entrance was secure, no matter how small. Instead, he moved toward the couch. "We're even training the children to recognize friends, so don't be surprised if you see them running to you. We're trying to teach them to match names and faces, so if they hear a name, they are supposed to run to a certain person. We've started with family, but we want to make sure that they know everyone in the team."

TJ shrugged noncommittally, lacking any eagerness to admit that before all this he very well might not have cared if he was dead. Coming to the realization he didn't actually want to die anymore, that the future might actually hold something worthwhile if he stuck around long enough, was still messing with his head. "It doesn't, really, but thanks for the effort. I think I'll just skip ejecting from a plane if at all possible and leave the heroics to those of you who are good at it."

He shook his head. "I'm sure if Savannah thinks she's going back to training, she's expecting to do more than an hour total between the weights and the pool." The idea of Savannah having an easy switch was amusing. Nothing about what she'd suggested on that mountain had been the easy way. If she had a slow and easy mode, TJ would be greatly surprised. "I'm pretty sure working out with me while the rest of you are training in all the 'fun' things like hand-to-hand is her idea of a punishment."

Following Callen to the couch, he sat down, still carefully considering the bruising was not only on his chest, but spotted all down his right side, particularly the knee and hip, where he and the car door had become more intimately acquainted than he'd ever desired. Clothes were rather uncomfortable, still. "He's pretty much a big kid himself," he said fondly, eyes seeking his lover out almost automatically. "But, it makes him happy. So, I guess I'll have to get used to having kids around. At least I won't care if my clothes get ruined for the most part."

"I wasn't worried," he said simply. There might have been a snort if he'd been talking to anyone he was close to, or even Savannah, since she'd asked for blunt. But, TJ kept the snort, huff, and laugh to himself with Callen when it came to his ideas on worrying about security. It never ceased to amuse him, though, the amount of assumptions people made about what what he thought or liked or wanted solely based on who his father was. As if TJ worried about security. The last thing TJ usually worried about was security. He worried about Travis and Doug being safe, like he had during the earthquake. But, he didn't worry overly much about security beyond doing what he was supposed to in order to keep people here off his back about it.

At least, mostly. Sleeping in clothes really wasn't happening too often.

The rest was...well, not really strange when he stopped to think about it. It sounded fucked up as hell, but he could see the need. He'd been older, just twelve, when his dad took office. But, there'd been efforts made to ensure he knew all the names and faces of the agents assigned to the First Family, not just his own personal agent, any staff that would deal with the family. Easier to know when someone shouldn't be there if you knew those who should. "That makes sense, I suppose, since they're so little I don't imagine they can simply be asked to memorize names and faces at initial introductions."

Robert stayed quiet, letting Thomas answer. His mother might not have been the next president of the US, but he knew all about being spoiled and adjusting. "It wasn't much of an effort. Effort would be admitting than more than one person has thought that death might be a better option. The more money and better life before, the more it happens," he said, as if discussing the weather, while looking at Jamie for a moment, giving the other man some sort of privacy, but it was all shuttered when Liam teleported on the couch.

"Hold," he said, stretching his arms.

Robert looked at his son amused. "And some kids are spoiled even here. You don't like me holding other kids, do you?" he asked, laughing, but he didn't expect an answer, instead he got up. "I'll be right back." He walked across the room and handed Deeks the baby. "Liam says it's your turn now." He grabbed two beers on the way back, and handed one to Thomas, before sitting down. Liam crawled over and sat on his lap without a word. "Brat," Robert said affectionately, before looking at Thomas. "Maybe you can help Savannah slow down. She is getting up every two hours and she has another two children If you could maybe mention your injuries and how you're not supposed to put stress on them, and you'd like company... let just say that a few people would appreciate if we don't have to tie her up to prevent her from overdoing it. Again."

He lowered his gaze as Liam reached for his bottle. He helped as his son tried to drink from it, chuckling when Liam choked.

"Yuck!"

"Yes, and I didn't tell you to drink, did I?" Robert answered, refusing to speak to his son like he had forgotten grammar.

"Go play."

Robert laughed. "Sure, now that you got rid of Jamie, you can leave." He kissed Liam's head and let him down. "Go play, but don't hurt the dogs or they will bite you."

"Ouch... danger."

"Yes, they will hurt you if you hurt them," Robert said, because it wasn't like this was the first time that they played rough with the dogs, and it wouldn't be the last time, they'd be warned. He followed Liam with his eyes until he was back with the rest of the kids and Travis, who was sitting on the floor with them and playing. "Sorry about that, and yes, I can see he enjoys it. Not something I enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I love my son, and I love the kids here. They are family. I just don't like kids, even when they don't ruin my clothes."

He took a sip of the beer and relaxed, or as much as he would relax with these many people. "I was joking. The strange and unusual sense of humor that is developed after living here for too long," he said with a smirk, before growing serious. "I didn't really believe that you cared about security. You're used to having it, not being paranoid, and that's how it should be. At least how it was supposed to be until you got here. These children will never have that normality, which is ironic, because I doubt that your life was anything near normal, and yet, it still more normal than they would know, but knowing that they have it worse doesn't really help, not when you're used to partying around the globe, having the finest things in life and suddenly you're here, and people are asking whether you prefer a Glock or a Sig, discussing the merits of a .38 over a .45, or talking about ejecting from a plane. No matter what Savannah says, life sucks here. We've all gone through this, trying to adjust. No hugs or pies from me, but you're not alone and the door is always open if you want to talk to someone who's not family. Of course I also know how likely you are to trust anyone not family, so I don't expect anything. A year down the line, if you still need it, I'm here, and so are a lot of people in this family."

"That's a relief," TJ muttered. "I was beginning to think I'd wandered into Romper Room naked with the way people react to my lack of interest in children." The timely arrival of Callen's son had given TJ an excuse to avoid the topic of death wishes and how real his had been for so much of his 'better life' with 'more money'. And the beer he'd accepted with a quiet thanks when Callen offered it provided a cover for TJ to process his thoughts watching the other man interact with his son. The hug from his father had thrown him, even though he knew it was probably half for appearances because TJ couldn't remember the last time his father had hugged him like that...or looked at him the way Callen looked at his son. TJ had probably been about Liam's age.

"Does that ever scare the shit out of you?" he asked watching the toddler latch onto Travis' arm as if to drag TJ's lover even further down to his level. He might not like kids, but TJ couldn't help smiling while he watched Travis with them. The smiles and laughter were almost worth dealing with kids just to watch. Almost. "That he can just pop in and out of places anyway he likes?"

Now TJ did snort. "Right. I guess I haven't gotten to the weird sense of humor phase yet. I'm still at the wanting to shoot the next person who wakes me up before nine in the morning phase." Although, the fact he was thinking in terms of shooting them himself instead of sending them out to be shot was probably telling and another one of those things TJ just refused to think about. "I was the one throwing a party for half the campus the day my dad left office and my security detail was reassigned...hopefully to someone who wanted them around. A nice vacation after trying to keep tabs on me while I tried every which way to ditch them for almost a decade."

He stared at Callen for a moment, surprised anyone in their family would dare to contradict Savannah's peaches and sunshine attitude while talking to him. Actually, he was surprised anyone was acknowledging that knowing it was worse for others didn't make it any easier to get used to on his own. "I appreciate the offer, especially the lack of hugs and pies, which are great if in moderation. I do. Maybe sometime down the road I'll need to take you up on it. But, right now...things are actually good." Huffing softly, he smiled a little and took a sip of beer. "Nothing that couldn't be improved by real, quality clothes, a bed with a headboard, a talented stylist, a week's retreat at a spa, a menu that included something more exotic than steak and potatoes, and lazy days spent napping and fucking. But, good."

The self-imposed seven-month benchmark that he'd set before he could truly accept he was really staying clean was fast approaching. And he was still clean. He had his brother at his side in a way they hadn't had each other since TJ was sent away to boarding school. And, he had an insane cop who loved him as much as TJ loved him. Strange as it was, while training and their lifestyle sucked, TJ was still happier than he'd been at home.

"So, suggest to Savannah I'd like company, huh? Any helpful tips on how to do that without getting adopted like a lonely puppy? She seems to have decided I need a caretaker as it is."

Robert laughed. "No, not just you. I have no interest in children, but there's Savannah, so we all know better than to express the sentiment around her. It's just easier to avoid an hour long speech that's meant to convince us of the beauty of shitty diapers. We might be headstrong, but we all know when to pick our battles." And he was a pro at ignoring what he didn't want to hear, so it work for him.

He looked at Liam and snorted. "He was a preemie, spent months in the incubator. When we took him out and stored the incubator, he disappeared from his crib and teleported to the incubator that was in a truck under the Arizona sun. It's why we have a GSP on his ankle and one that I pin in his clothes. Once we live here, with no computers, no satellites, and no GPS, now that scares the fuck out of me, but it's not like there's much to be done."

No one got their sense of humor, but Robert knew that, instead he stared at Thomas for a moment. "At least you can shoot them now, and I bet that nine in the morning used to be a much later time." He took another sip. "I got my commission in the Air Force after college, a pilot naturally. I didn't have a security detail, but my adoptive mother trained me since I was not much older than Liam. Turns out she might have been an ex CIA operative, which explains the training, but I like not relying on anyone else."

Robert chuckled again. "What? You think we're all like her? I'll let you in on a secret. None of us are, maybe Sean, at least with the hugs, but it takes all kinds to make a family, and it takes someone like her to bring so many different personalities together, but we're not the Borg." He nodded. "I'm glad, but if you find hat spa and stylist and don't share, I might hurt you, and I know plenty of ways to do it that don't ruin my manicure." He grew serious. "Open ended, Thomas. I can't say I know what you must feel like, but I might get some things better than some of the others. As I said, when you trust me." And Robert wasn't holding his breath, because that took time, a lot more than two months, a few parties and hugs.

"Oh, you're fucked. They pretty much adopted Travis the day he arrived, because he's LAPD, so you'd have no choice eve if she didn't think you were a puppy, but for training, she's technically still on leave. I'll tell her to stick with you, ask you for help with the kids if it becomes too much, and you just mention your injuries once in a while," he said with a smirk. "Seriously, Thomas, you don't think that we all go for honesty and hugs, right? I'm perfectly all right with spinning things if it avoids me a discussion with that girl. I love her, my brother adopted her, but that doesn't mean I enjoy banging my head against a wall when she's decided that she's going to do something." He moved closer and lowered his voice. "You know, it is much easier to nod and go along at the beginning, because then she eases up and you can do whatever you want again. On the other hand, if you ever need anything, she'll help before you even ask, before you even know you need help. She's got a good heart," he said, smiling in Savannah's direction. "She pushes, but that's because she's had to deal with men who put so many walls up that you needed a professional climber to see what was behind them, but if she ever gets too much, no matter what the problem she thinks is, tell her that you're talking to me about it, okay? Just give me the heads up in case she checks with me."

"You're her family," TJ pointed out, knowing that didn't really mean shit considering his own family held no compunctions against ripping into anything and everything each member held dear. But, it didn't take a genius to see that Savannah's family wasn't like that. It seemed more...normal?...for them to keep silent rather than start World War III. In TJ's family, it seemed there was always a battle, no picking. Or maybe that was just TJ, since he never really had figured out how to fit into the world he'd been born into.

"I'm suddenly very glad you were never on my security detail," he said, laughing. "My parents would have been through the moon at the thought of putting a GPS tracker on me. I wouldn't have minded being able to just pop out of some places, Secret Service none the wiser. Getting laid at boarding school would have been so much easier." So would getting high, but TJ was coming to learn that most people here really didn't understand how far down that road he'd really been. They had Vail's rumors, that first month when TJ and his family had first arrived. But, they'd mostly known the man he was since coming back and while he was still struggling, no one needed to know how close he'd been to not being able to turn himself around.

"Depends on whether that nine in the morning was getting up time or bedtime." He shrugged. "It wasn't much later as often as I'd like. Even the party boy in the family has to be up and presentable for the photo ops, the briefings from aids before appearances, contractors coming to the club with contracts to sign." And it was the best way to hide the extent of the partying. A few pictures from clubs on Page Six, a slew of proper photos with his family, smiling and waving and doing 'good work'. The average person was far too trusting of their media consumption. Show them enough pictures of one version of Thomas Hammond and they considered the rest rare aberrations or symptoms of troubles requiring sympathy. "But, yeah, theoretically, I can shoot them now." Having never had to draw a gun on a person in his life, who knew if he was actually capable of pulling the trigger.

Raising an eyebrow, he still grinned devilishly. "Now that is something they need to start focusing on in the training here. It wouldn't suck half as much if they took manicures into account." Taking a pull from his beer, TJ looked around the room. "Not so much like her, but more not contradicting her to outsiders. United in public, disagree in silence...or private, if necessary." He was tempted to say that he didn't know what he felt like half the time, so it would be hard for Callen to understand. But, again, no point in putting that much of himself out there for the world to see. "Thanks. I told Travis once, not long after we left the school, you were probably one of the few people worth talking to around here for that reason, actually."

TJ sighed. "One family is all I need." And that was the problem, really. Savannah saw family as this great thing to be coveted. TJ spent half his life trying to avoid most of his. Chuckling, he shook his head. "Spin is my brother's department, usually because of me. I've been given to understand Dom's already explained my reputation to everyone when I arrived. So, I'm sure that isn't a new revelation. Now, the banging your head against the wall? That I understand entirely after just one night. I guess if I can survive talking her out of a little nighttime rock climbing of the literal sort, I can manage to play up the fact I look like I went twelve rounds with the Hulk under my clothes. I'm going to remember that offer, though. It's not that I don't appreciate her concern, but sometimes help is better done from a distance. There are a lot of things she can't help with because I have to do them myself or it's just putting a band-aid on an amputated limb."

Robert nodded. "I am, but it's more than that and it's not limited to her. We are all thrown here and we come from all walks of life and we need to make it work. Now, I'm not one to socialize with the enlisted men and it's not very different here, but that doesn't mean that I'll antagonize them, unless they piss me off and then all bets are off. I know all about the temptation to make a point, but in the end it's not worth it, and not just because you don't want the aggravation, but because at some point you will fuck up. It's team and it only works if we support each other, and sometimes that means turning a blind eye."

Robert snorted. "It'd be even worse if you were my son. There's a difference between a job and a son, and besides there is no other way to keep him safe at the moment. By the time, he's a teenager, I will expect him to know how to defend himself."

He looked at Thomas, but was thinking about training. "Have you ever shot anything? An animal? Something?" They had done it with Sam, but maybe it might be a good idea to get hunting licenses to give everyone a taste.

"For the important stuff, sure. If we were on the field, or it was something crucial, then you wait until you are in private, but not for personal things. We don't speak for each other and we don't say the same thing. Also, you've made it to a private party. You already see more by virtue of being included here." Robert chuckled. "That's because I'm amazing."

Robert didn't have to ask what he was thinking, because he had gone through this himself. "My mother told me my father was dead and I didn't know about G until I came here. I had a family and this... This was G's family for a long time. Savannah keeps adding people, but they aren't myfamily. That doesn't mean that they are nothing. She used the term family. I used to call it squadron. G called it team. You find the name that makes you comfortable, because sooner or later you will need someone that isn't your family. If you think I'm lying, just look at Jamie Ray." He put his hand on TJ's knee for a moment. "You don't have to say anything. Dom briefed the people that needed to come and get you, the people in charge. Not me. Could I find out? Sure. Do I want to? Not unless it becomes relevant or you feel the need to tell me, because that's how trust is built." Robert had never shared his story. People knew it, but no one had ever asked and he'd never volunteered until now. "You will need to do the work for yourself, but you might need the help when you least expect it."

TJ shook his head. "Dad did a little hunting. It's what was done, you know. So, he dragged us along, put rifles in our hands. But, while I could fish, hunting was never my thing. Only thing I've ever pointed at a person was a paintball gun when Travis took us out for practice. I can hit him and Doug just fine with paint. I can shoot a paper target to his satisfaction. But, no, nothing alive with live ammo."

"I seem to have antagonized her well enough without even trying." TJ snorted softly. And then he'd been forced to help her deliver her baby, thereby creating the one eighty that had resulted in his even being there that afternoon. Sighing, he finished he beer. "There isn't a word for...this-" he waved his hand absently at the room in general. "Family...that's complicated. Friends? Most people here won't appreciate my definition of friends and the one who would is the one I'm learning to use a different definition with. There's been no team, no squadron, no...anything like this. Even our concepts of 'private party' aren't really the same." A private party for their family just meant one in which it was only family and colleagues. There was no such thing as someplace you could let yourself be seen without the masks.

Not even 'home'.

"It's not about trust." He winced slightly when Callen's hand fell on his bruised knee, then shook his head. "Not that much. The whole country knows almost everything I've done. People whose names and faces I'll never know possess intimate details of everything from my drug habits to the exact day I lost my virginity. Or some version of it. There really isn't any reason not to talk about it. I fucked up. A lot. Doug was the one who fixed the fuck ups with the spin." Not that TJ couldn't lie, cheat, or connive to get what he wanted. He had. Often. But, there was very little worth the effort of such tactics here. What he'd done with his life? The world knew that story. How he felt about it, what he thought of himself? That was his to dole out as it was earned.

Asking for help? That would require trust.

"I might need it," he admitted. "But, I might also need to do some things on my own. Someone wants to come pull me up the mountain, if I get stuck again? Feel free. That kind of help is more than welcome. Some of the rest? Help isn't always as helpful as one might think." And that was the problem in trying to communicate with Savannah. They disagreed on what kind of help he needed.

"I wasn't here, but Sam took the team out, hunting once. We haven't done it since I've been here, but if we can't do it with the team, ad if you're okay with it, I'd go with you. Or you can tell Travis, although-" Why the fuck had he even started this conversation? Oh yes, this was G's team, and Deeks would need help to cover everything and take care of everyone. "I know it would be easier with him, but you might want to consider stepping out of your comfort zone."

Robert chuckled "She's fine now, and that's all it matters." The rest was even more familiar. He'd had plenty of discussions about 'friends' with Mike. "No on appreciates my definition of friends, which I suspect was much like yours. They are mutual beneficial acquaintances, with only the right people, from the right families and with the right connections, but I was lucky. I had the Air Force. Thing is you don't have to define what this is, just like you don't have to accept the word 'family'. Just accept that it's here. No definition needed."

Wincing in sympathy, he took his hand away. "Sorry, I'll hit the other knee next time," he said teasingly. "The country might know, but we don't, and you fucked up, but that's also a past tense. Your record with us is pretty good, and look, the truth is that every single one of us has had some really fucked up moments since coming here, and it might as well be the whole country knowing it, because anyone who knows us knows what we did. In a way, we're in your situation, and we do understand."

He snorted at the comment. "You will do some things on your own, because we're not that nice. Look, I get what you're saying. I can't say addiction has ever been my problem, because with my job, I'd probably be dead, but sometimes when you need to do something aloe, or you think you do, a supporting word from someone who's not your family can g a long way, because no one wants to disappoint his family, so there's certain barrier there, whether we like to admit it or not, but it's much easier to rely on someone outside your family when you don't are what they'll think. Whether that's Savannah or someone else, that's for you to decide."
