Summary: Sam thinks and writes
Sam was sitting outside their cave, looking out over the valley that spread as far as he could see. The sun was out and would be over an hour before they'd start turning on the fires all around camp. They had created a semicircle in front of the cave, cleaned it from plants or anything remotely attractive and had fires going, usually with meat and bones, enough to let the animals know that this area was dangerous.
The rest of their team was there too. They had a book between them, which they had all read. They had paper, but no one else was writing. There was exercise, which was how they passed their days when not gathering what they needed for their survival. No one walked off on his own, because it was too dangerous. The closeness was dangerous too. He was keeping an eye on G, wondering how long before he reached his limit.
Sharing time the first few days had been hard, but it got worse. G didn't sleep with people around and Sam had to find a solution. Sometime during their second week here, he'd declared that they were using the last row to sleep. It wasn't as comfortable as the front chair, but he could hold G He didn't think for a moment that his partner liked showing such weakness, but it was necessary. To their credit, Morgan and Prentiss never commented on it and even mirrored their position, using the opposite side of the car as a back rest. And, so their days and nights went, being together 24/7.
Sam had one way to achieve some sense of solitude. He was writing. It wasn't a Dear Diary, but a log. He didn''t know how long they'd be here or if other people would arrive, but if they did show up and they were dead, there would be a record of their presence here and some helpful hints.
March 7, 2013 We still have our watches marking time, but sooner or later they won't be of any help. This helps us keep track of the passing days. As I have written, the fire with the smell of burning flesh and bones keeps the animals away. We've haven't had any close encounters in the past month. We've also found a way to make tampons for Prentiss. I'm sticking a piece of the plant in here, just in case. The cotton like ending needs to be soaked, pressed together in the shape of the tampon and let it dry for at least three days. Disposal afterward must be immediate, because these animals will smell even the faintest smell of blood. We have solved the food problem. Sea food is out of question. Walking to the sea is impossible and even if we could, the types of animals likely to be there would kill us before we got there. Meat is possible to find, but still tricky. We can reach carcasses, but usually the meat is already rotten and must be cooked thoroughly. Even then, we're left very little. Killing the animals is easier, but surviving all the predators that arrive is not. We are trying not to use our guns, which means we need to get creative, using traps, wooden spears and other survival techniques. When we do trap and kill the animal, we must be very quick to cut what we need and leave. Usually we leave that part to G, since he can do the first cut and get away faster than anyone else. I've stayed with him more than a few times, but only if I'm intangible. As much as I hate my power, I would put him in danger by being corporeal. Some of these dinosaurs are simply too fast even for me. Fortunately, there are plenty of plants. We've spent the first few weeks watching the animals, learning what fruits, seeds and vegetables wouldn't kill us. Some, while not poisonous, are not for human consumption unless you plan to be sick for days. I'm making a list of edible and inedible plants by using their leaves. Water remains our biggest problem. Animals tend to gather near large bodies of water, which means we can't be near them. We have bottles and canteens that we fill up and thankfully it rains most afternoons, but they only go so far. We've made plenty of trips down to the valley, and only our powers (mine and G) have allowed us to get what we need. That's still not enough for washing and other necessities. We've made holes within our camp area, used garbage bags and rocks to line the walls. We are able to gather some water, but it's certainly not clean. We also don't know how long the rain water will last. If it is seasonal, we might have to move up north or find some other solution. On a personal note, my body is changing. I'm not sure how to explain it. I've always been very in tune with my body, and I've known that there was something wrong since before my power manifested itself. It continued throughout the months, but here, it was finally getting better. It felt right. I know G would say that it's the use of my power, that I can't ignore it or repress it. He probably would be right, or at least I thought so, except that lately, it feels wrong again, and I'm still using my power. I haven't said anything, because there is little to explain. There's no evidence or proof, just decades of exercise, of treating my body like a temple, of learning to identify every little pain. There is no evidence, but there is this strange feeling before the rain starts, a sense of electricity all around me. Hopefully, I'll figure it out before anything bad happens. |
