All,

There have been some questions coming up lately about some of the technical side of things and how the gadgets we've all gotten used to carrying fit into our current preparations. Since I've done this before, I'm sharing my recommendations so you can all prep accordingly.

We won't be allowed to take most of the tech we have now with us. That includes your laptops and phones.

Since we all have things we'd like to keep, I recommend putting any data you don't want to lose on a thumb drive. You've all seen me carrying them around for two years, passing them out like candy when things are needed. This is why. They're small, easily stuck in a pocket, and you can put pretty much your entire life in pictures and text on a single 16GB drive. If you don't have one, see me. I have plenty to spare.

In addition to that, most people who aren't on the research team won't need to be carting their laptops around at all now. Obviously, the research team will still need to be carrying the laptops around because they're needed at the moment. But, for everyone else, don't put them in your go bags. Use your phone to check email. Movies, games, these can all be watched and played at home. Get out of the habit of taking the units everywhere because they won't be going with us. Use the thumb drive to back-up your data every time you use the computer at home and carry the thumb drive with you.

Your phones will get left behind as well. But, for now, they're still useful. So, keep those.

Any questions about anything tech related and getting ready to leave, you can come to me and I can either help or point you at the person who can.

John

Sir,

As a follow-up to the email I just sent everyone, I've been considering long range communications. Our cells phones won't get a signal because there's no satellites or cell towers or networks that will support the transmission signals. But, I think we could manage to make old school walkie talkies and CB radios work. The signals don't need to pass through towers or satellites to work. Just receiver to receiver. And if Sam and Callen have their comms, still, they might be able to pick up our transmissions. That part's a long shot, I know. But, the rest could be a useful option to have.

Not so much a data problem, but if we're leaving the phones, you need to help me find a camera that doesn't use like a gazillion batteries, because these kids will have pictures of their families and themselves. In the end, it's the only sense of normality we can give them. Something digital with memory cards so we can save them in case the cameras get lost.

xoxo,
Savannah

I'll see what I can come up with for you. Most digital cameras eat battery life incredibly fast. Power's going to be an issue for everything. Let me do some research into it. And I'll talk to Sean and Nell. There may be something Sean can do with his power to help. If there is, Nell will know. She's done all kinds of research into both of their powers since they're connected. Between the three of us, we should be able to come up with something.

John,

The walkie talkies were on the list of things that Mr. Callen brought back from Pennsylvania. They have a six mile range which is more than the five miles allowed by law for CB radios. However, if there is any way to modify the range, I'm all ears.

Sir,

The range on a CB radio is easily extended with amplifiers. The range limitation is one of policy, not technology. Actual range can reach up to a couple hundred miles with the right amplification. It's just not something most people outside the survivalist communities are aware of because of those FCC regulations. We can adjust the walkie talkies to operate on the same bands and extend the general range of both by using them together.

John,

Pick what we need and have Brian order it.
