Maura nodded at the request to use his name, then refocused her attention on work. "Yes, I'm aware there was someone tending to what came up in the past. I was thinking of a much more proactive approach. Starting with the physicals, which I would think should be very helpful, particularly when you are preparing for a situation in which advanced medical care may no longer be available. The chances of survival for everyone would be best helped by identifying and strengthening the current medical status for each person who goes with you. Treating these things as they come up is very good. But, for the type of endeavor you are preparing for, advanced notice and preventative measures are highly advisable.
"I was informed of the restriction on biological specimens before Agent Callen and the others disappeared. And, while I can understand the necessity in the past when the possibility of theft due to improper security and storage practices, given the security of this facility, I would like to petition for a change in that policy. With the current restrictions, even a basic physical examination would be incomplete and useless for making any meaningful determination of health or readiness. Even the ability to perform a basic panel of blood tests requiring only a microscope and centrifuge would double my ability to make those determinations."
Maura smiled. "Yes, that would be appreciated. I can also provide you with a list of the equipment I would need for cross referencing with the current supply. And, of course, I would be happy to explain to him the benefits of doing such research now while there is an opportunity. Foremost among my concerns is the strange discoloration of the pigments in Miss Donovan's thumb. While there may be a perfectly natural explanation through the study of the genetic mutations triggered by the dimensional crossing, there are also a number of severe medical conditions whose presence may be indicated by such a discoloration, conditions that could mean the difference between life and death once we no longer have access to real medical facilities."
