RP: Oliver/Tommy
Who: Oliver/Tommy
When: Sunday 1-6-13
Where: Their room
Summary: Oliver shares!

It was Sunday, and Tommy was sleeping in because they had nothing they needed to do. Oliver had been awake at normal time, ate breakfast, did a load of laundry, thought about scaling the outside of the house to kill some time, and finally decided that Tommy had slept enough.

"Wake up, Princess," Oliver said, coming into their bedroom. It was ridiculous to be carrying a bag and a rifle around the house, and he hadn't seen Robert or Mike doing it, so he'd left the gear in the bedroom unless they were going out. Instead of that stuff, Oliver carried a tray of food and coffees, one for them both. "Breakfast is served."

Oliver had thought about speaking to Tommy yesterday, but hadn't done so. There had been other things to talk about, like the probability of the club being lame and how Tommy should step up to arrange these things. Light chatter, nothing important, and it gave Oliver one more day to set his mind to task.

He couldn't wait any longer, not when their first day of survival training began tomorrow. While he would excel at it and probably would end up teaching the others, he would really rather not do it.

Oliver set the tray down on the bed beside Tommy, keeping a hand on it so it wouldn't disturb while Tommy moved and Oliver took a seat.

Tommy liked the weekends, because they had nothing to do, and he really tried to do nothing. Going to that club had been the extent of his activities for the weekend. In fact, he'd rather starve than cook, but the smell of coffee had him waking up with a smile on his face.

"Coffee... food!" he said as he opened his eyes and gave Oliver the brightest smile. "Have I told you how much I love you? Because I do." He sat up and fixed the blankets on his lap before reaching for the tray. "I always thought that I needed to date or pay a maid to get this treatment. You should have told me that I only needed to room with you. I would have moved in with you after you got back," he teased.

He knew that most of the food came in form of powders and cans or frozen foods but it was better than gutting fish and cooking it on a grill. "How long have you been up?"

"Hours. When I started thinking about climbing the house, I figured it was time I finally woke your lazy ass up." Oliver took his own coffee and leaned back against the headboard, crossing his bare feet at the ankles. "I was going to skulk around the island later with my bow, see how rusty I've gotten, if you want to come."

Using a bow and using a firearm were two different things. But both were equally efficient if used correctly. Oliver was also attempting to bring up what he wanted to talk about naturally. "We start survival training tomorrow, you know," he tacked on.

"You want to start climbing the on floor house, because...?" Tommy asked confused. "But if you're lacking in things to do, I can tell you all that I need. Laundry, cooking, cleaning," he said, trying not to laugh. "As long as I don't have to do anything, I'll come with you. Are we waking or begging for one of those cars they use for emergencies? Because walking on Sunday is an emergency."

Tommy ate a piece of toast and some of his eggs, before looking back at Oliver. "I've heard. I was trying very hard not to think about what he considers survival. I'm pretty sure that this counts as survival for most of the people I know." He stopped for a moment, and realized what he had said. "Except you don't. This is better than you had it."

"We're walking, but I'll go slow. We could use the tennis balls, but I think people who actually use them for tennis would get ticked off at their destruction."

Oliver had his opening, and he took a deep breath, releasing it slowly before nodding. "Much, and I think you and the others are going to be learning how difficult it was, without the pressure of necessity, allowing you to make mistakes," he said. "Derek isn't wrong in that it's deciding its important to learn, but... I want to do it even less than you do. I've done it already, for real, barely four months ago. I don't want to re-live it when it's not necessary."

"Okay, maybe I don't love you so much," he answered, chuckling. "I don't even want to know why you'd connect walking with tennis balls. In fact, I fear I'll find out regardless of what I want."

Tommy took another bite and then put the tray toward the foot of the bed. The coffee mug went on the floor so that he could move without worrying about spilling. "So it's necessary to learn, it allows us to know things without consequences, you agree that it's for the bast, but you don't want to do any of it. Why, Oliver? You have no problem with the rest, but suddenly we're cooking in pits and it's bothering you." He put his hand on the juncture between Oliver's neck and shoulder and squeezed. "Why the difference?"

Oliver had to force himself to answer, but answer he did. "Because it's too real to me, Tommy. You don't know what it's like to be starving so badly you'd eat almost anything. You don't know how hard it is to catch a bird, a rabbit, or any type of land animal with nothing more than sticks. You don't know what it's like to beat rocks together until your hands bleed in order to start a fire so you don't freeze to death."

Oliver pressed his lips together. It sounded melodramatic to his own ears, but it was all the truth. Derek and maybe John were probably the only one who understood, with differing circumstances.

"At some point while I was there, Russians came to make a smuggling base on the island. I got involved with them for a while, hoping it'd be my ticket off the island. It was like being here, like we are right now, half between having things and not having things. I even became friends with some of them.

"Then one day, they captured someone important to me and killed him before I could do anything. I slaughtered all but a few of them who'd been guarding the boat, who'd escaped. After that, I was alone for a long time."

Tommy drew circles with his thumb on Oliver's neck, trying to give him some support. "I'm sorry, Oliver. I mean, I never thought about what you had to go through. As much as I asked, I never thought about the details, and I'm sorry. I should have. I should have thought of it, asked about it."

He reached for Oliver's hand with his free one. He squeezed it gently. "You're not alone now. I know I'm hardly good for anything, but I am here with you and there are a lot of other people. You're not doing it alone, and when the memories get to be too much, you talk to me. We're supposed to do this survival thing with our roommates, which means me and you. Together."

Tommy shifted and hugged him, clapping his back. "I'm here, a little useless, but here, and I don't know how hard it is to do all of those things, but I know you don't have to go through that again." He pulled back. "If only because we're carrying a zippo with extra gas from now on," he teased.

The zippo comment pulled a laugh from Oliver. "Only a few more things to stuff in our pockets, huh?" he said.

Oliver was glad he'd said something. He couldn't say that talking made him feel better, but Tommy reminding him that this wasn't there did help. "Somehow, I think that I'm going to be doing all the work, while you do all the talkative supporting."

Oliver took a drink from his coffee, then turned the mug in his hands. "His name was Yao Fei, by the by. He was my mentor on the island, taught me how to survive practically everything that was thrown at me."

"If you're going to wear those things, which are an insult to anyone with eye sight, then we might as well add a zippo," he said, chuckling. "I'm such a good planner."

Tommy shrugged, but smiled. "I told you. I have o problem being the damsel in distress and you can be the White Knight. I'll stand around with my best suit, looking totally charming and elegant and you can do the work. It's a shame that we both develop callouses."

He sat back and grabbed his own cup from the floor, giving Oliver the space he needed if he wanted to talk, still surprised when he did. "I'm sorry about him, about what you had to do. No man should be forced to kill, but you aren't a killer Oliver. If coming here is going to stop you from doing what you were doing, killing without even blinking, then I'm not sorry that we're here. You deserve better than that life."

"Good thing I got you the cuff links if you're going to wear your suit," Oliver joked.

He thought about Tommy's last statement, turning it over in his mind before commenting on it. "Killing is a means of survival. You hesitate, you die. You can't afford to be plagued by remorse or guilt. You do what's necessary and move on."

"Hey, I can make those cargo pants looking stylish. It's the new hipster look. Oh wait, you skipped the hipster faze. It's basically very rich people like us pretending to be poor and wearing five hundred dollar plaid shirts to look like rednecks." He shook his head. "You didn't miss much."

Tommy nodded and in part he understood, in a very intellectual way, but they weren't talking intellectually. "And that's fine for when you were on the island, or even here, but back in Starling City? It wasn't survival, Oliver. It was your father's directive. He made you kill without thinking of the consequences. Do you even know your body count? How many men you killed to get to the men in that list? I'm sorry, but I can't approve of what your father told you to do. You want to fight them, do it from the inside, do it legally like Laurel does, use your business to do it. You don't kill people, because it hurts you, whether you admit it or not. I don't believe for a moment that those deaths didn't mean anything to you."

"Those deaths meant that the person on the list could no longer hurt anyone. A few lives for the benefit of many." When Oliver heard himself say it, he was suddenly back with Helena having a similar conversation, only this time he was in Helena's role.

He pressed his thumb and fingers to his temples, covering his eyes. "I am totally fucked up." He dropped his hand with a sigh. He needed to get away from this topic. He tugged at the hem of his t-shirt on the right side, exposing the line of Mandarin characters. "Look, I have tattoos."

"Seriously? Oliver, look at me and tell me that those body guards were just collateral damage. That their parents, wives, children should feel better, because their death helped a greater cause," he said. "I know you don't mean that. They are dead and you never look at at anything or anyone in your quest."

He cupped the back of Oliver's neck. "You are very fucked up, but I'm here to help you. I'm not going to judge, but I'm not going to nod and tell you that everything is fine." He watched as Oliver raised the shirt and traced the ink with his fingers. "What does that mean? Does it mean anything at all? I can't see you doing this because it's the new trend."

"Our own paths, right? I think you're going to make it there long before I do," Oliver said.

"They're the characters for mouse, ginger, Yao, and pig, and no I'm not going to tell you the meaning behind them, aside from the one that I already have." Oliver had no scars on that side of his abdomen. "I'll let you try to figure it out."

"Our own paths," he said, nodding. "And we're going to do it together. You'll help me with the things I don't know how to do, and I'll help you with the things you have forgotten. It's a joint journey. I'm not going anywhere without you."

Tommy chuckled. "That's quite the mix, but I don't think I want to figure it out just yet. I like that you can tell me what happened, even if slowly. We're not in a rush." And yet, he was well aware that Oliver had told him more while they'd been here than all the months at home. "I'd lose my valet if we go too fast," he joked.

"Have to keep my damsel happy," Oliver joked in return, and settled in for some mindless banter before he forced walking on Tommy and got accustomed to his bow again. And maybe show off a little.
