RP: Happy Year 1 Million BC?
Who: Sam, G, Derek, Emily
Where: a cave
When: Dec. 31, 2012/Jan. 1, 2013
Summary: It's the strangest of NYEs
They had been here close to a week, and they had to adjust to a set of conditions that they had never considered. On the first day, they had found caves. It had taken some trial and error and a very close call until they found a cave that was empty and fit the van that worked as a cork, stopping anything from coming in.
Their supplies was limited. They were people who planned ahead, but they weren't stocking months of supplies in the car. Water had been their first problem. Finding it wasn't hard. The landscape was nothing like theirs, with lush plants and plenty of water. The problem was that were there was water, there were animals. Big, huge, fucking humongous animal that looked like the dinosaurs, but not really. After all, these animals had gone through millions of years of evolutions. The ones that looked herbivorous were just as dangerous as the others, because of their size. For the first time in two years, Sam was glad to have a power that let him walk undisturbed through the herds, becoming corporeal for only a few seconds to fill up their canteens and then become incorporeal again.
Food was another problem. MREs and protein bars only got you so far, especially with G's metabolism. Observing the animals, they tried to figure out what was edible, what contained juices they could use. Despite the many varieties, they were limiting their intake of new plants to one a day. Meat was easier to find. Predators only ate so much, leaving plenty behind for smaller animals and now four humans. Fire was the one thing that they had to their advantage. Animals here would know the destructive power of fire and stay away from smoke. They got to cook and repel animals at the same time.
The other problem was New Year's Eve, aka G's birthday. Sam had prepared a basket at home. The theme for this year was Disney. Considering how much G had despite that trip, Sam couldn't not go there. However, the basket was at home (and he didn't even want to think who'd find it) and they were here, which meant he had to improvise in terms of a gift. He found it in the form of a sharp tooth from one of the carcasses they had harvested. He'd used his knife and other stones to smooth it until it turned into a very sharp knife. Of course, privacy was the other thing lacking.
With no electricity, most of their hunting and scavenging was done in the morning. They had their night vision goggles, but it was best to get accustomed to what these animals did before venturing in the night. The afternoon tended to be very wet since they got here. Once it got dark, they closed up the cave and spent the night talking and planning. The night temperature was decent for the time of the year, but it was still warmer and safer to sleep inside the van.
All of that meant that Sam had little occasion to be alone with G. It didn't help that Morgan had decided that they would be celebrating. "You know we have no alcohol, right?" Sam asked as Morgan talked about drinking to the new year.
"And now we know what you're missing from your list of vital things to carry with you at all times," Derek answered with a smile. "Come on, we have... we should name this plant. It can't be the coconut like plant forever. Either way, we have juice, we know it doesn't kill us. We can drink."
It was stupid, but Sam knew what Morgan was doing, keeping a sense of normality, marking the passing of time, knowing how long they were here. It might seem stupid, but in the long run, they might need the information. "All right, let's celebrate," he finally said, winking at G.
