Summary: Claudia gets her powers.

Claudia sprawled on the ground beside Sean, manning the drinks table set up between the two courts. It was overcast, but warm, and tennis was on the agenda. Claudia and Troy had been talking about sports on Friday during their work with Robert, and tennis had come up, and now tennis was being played. Claudia loved it. Troy was so easy-going, and that somehow rubbed off on everyone else. Not being crammed at the school or on the base in New York under scrutiny helped, too.

The icy drinks were green and yellow, some alcoholic, some not, to go with tennis. They'd all contributed snacks, too, spread out on the makeshift picnic blanket. Derek roamed the fenced perimeter rather than sat, Nakita with him. Alexis and Tim were playing a match with Troy and Nell.

Claudia didn't really know what was going on, so she cheered randomly for both sides whenever it looked like something good happened. "Woo-hoo!" she shouted as the ball bounced past Alexis and off the court. She raised her green drink, sloshing some over her hand. "Damn it." She licked the icy concoction from her fingers and sucked it off her thumb.

"Dude, this stuff stains," Claudia told Sean, showing him her right thumb, which was a light shade of moss.

Unbeknownst to her - yet - the plants surrounding the tennis court had begun to grow.

Tennis had never been a sport he'd played before the war. Baseball, football, hockey, he'd played all of them, depending on the season, but two decades of war had made him appreciate all the normal things human being did and this was the first time in his adult life that he had could enjoy them.

That didn't meant that he relaxed. Derek never relaxed. He walked around, his attention shifting from the game to their surroundings and back.

At first, he thought that he was hallucinating, which was still a possibility, but when he looked at the plants, he could see them grow. Not by much. Nothing on this island really grew. In a way it did remind him of a post nuclear land, with all the desert. However, there was no question that it was growing.

"Hey guys," he said, rifle pointed out. "Am I seeing things or are these plants growing?" Even if the others agreed, it would be good to see if it were real. They could all be hallucinating.

Claudia looked, just like the others, and sure enough the plants appeared to be growing. "They look like they're growing to me." She got up from the blanket on the ground. When she did, the plants shot up in height like a teenager on fast-forward.

"Whoa!" she exclaimed, the plants surrounding the fence at least waist-high now. They didn't seem to be slowing down in growth, either. "Alarm, alarm. Danger, Will Robinson."

Derek never had any clue what the woman was saying, but he didn't care. He was more interested in dealing with a potential threat. "Sean, fry these plant to the root. Troy, call Callen and Morgan and tell them what's going on. Nell, call John, and see if the radars showed any anomalies, anything or anyone that could have gotten here in any form."

He had his rifle ready now, finger on the trigger. Nell might think that you never pointed a gun unless you meant to use it, but Derek thought that it was better to be safe than sorry.

"Alexis, call one of the comic book nerds and see what we're dealing with in terms of power and check the people who haven't developed powers. Claudia, sit down and figure out if it's you, before we start patrolling the island."

Claudia was used to taking orders and questions, arguments, or commentary were to happen off the field unless they were for specific clarifications. She sat down again. The plants stopped growing, which combined with Derek's mention of powers, pointed to that being the likely answer.

She looked at her thumb. Her green thumb. She snorted. "You've got to be kidding me." She raised her thumb in the air and, as she did so, the plants not fried by Sean shot even higher. They were now at head-height and kept on growing until she dropped her hand.

She interrupted the others on their respective phones as they were doing as ordered. "I think it's me and my green thumb here."

Derek was slightly disappointed. He wanted something to do, and shooting someone provided the perfect something, but instead he put the rifle down. "Alexis, Nell, abort that. Sean, see what you can do to clean this area. We don't want blind spots." It was too used to using the landscape for his benefit not to want to level everything.

Troy snorted. "Yes, and Nell, stop getting up. You'll have to live on that floor from now on." He chuckled. These powers could be real useful or annoying. "Okay, concentrate on what's happening. You need to control this or you're really won't be allowed anywhere near anything with plants. Do you feel any different? Other than the green thumb."

Troy sat next to her. "It's not silly. None of these powers are silly unless you make them that. Try to stop moving. I know it's hard for you." The woman was like the Energizer Bunny. He was sure that Robert hadn't hurt her already only because Troy played interference and she did understand machines and training anyone else would be a bitch.

"Okay, take a few breaths and then figure out how you feel. See if you can feel a connection with those plants. And, if you think it's silly, we can finally have real food in the both the hot house garden and the outside one. If that's not enough, you can learn to control branches and kill people with them." People kept underestimating their powers, and Troy didn't understand why. "See? Not silly at all. Now, concentrate and see if you can control it. With me, it helps to picture things, but you need to find your own way."

It appeared the radius wasn't that large, once Sean had cleared nearly all the plants. Claudia estimated about a hundred feet, give or take a few. She could see plants at their normal height beyond the fence, and the plants hadn't attacked the far ends of the fencing, just the sides.

"I feel like a Knight who says Ni. Bring me a shrubbery!" Claudia joked, because joking was a defense mechanism. Of course, that defense mechanism ended up causing one of the remaining tall coyote brushes to plow along the newly desiccated land until it was directly opposite her and straining against the fence as if trying to get inside. She was glad she was in the middle of the two courts.

"Oookay, then, shutting up for now." Claudia closed her mouth and tried to follow Troy's advice. She tried feeling for something, got nowhere, and went with the visualization. Her mind wandered from the conventional to her being a tree nymph from one of her video games. Her mental nymph told the brush, Back off, bub.

The brush straining against the fence went into fast reverse, plowing away until it appeared to hit a barrier then stopped moving all together.

Claudia smiled. "Awesome."

Troy smiled a little. "I don't know what Knight would that be, but I'd suggest concentrating on things that are slightly more important."

He watched as she concentrated and when the brush moved, he grinned. "See? I knew you could do it. Now, try doing it looking less excited and without the 'awesome'. I got ripped a new one for having fun with these powers. And try working with only one or two at a time. We don't want Sean to have to destroy every plan on this island."

"Right. I'll put on my serious face." Claudia scrunched her brow and pursed her lips. "If anyone wants to escape, may as well do it now. There looks to be a radius and I'm at the center of it. When I move, it'll move."

Claudia waited. Then she stood up and moved closer to the net post. The brush on the left side of the fence beyond Sean's detritus began growing. She called up her mental tree nymph and got to work.
