"I thought about becoming a surgeon when I started med school. But, I find it easier to establish a rapport with the dead rather than with live patients," Maura admitted with a tiny shrug of one shoulder. "I like to find the answers to the riddles, to give victims a voice. My job let's me do that and it helps that my best friend is a homicide detective with Boston PD. So, we work very well together most of the time. I can't imagine this was a very easy life for a surgical resident. It must have been very frustrating for her. Most surgeons I know don't do well without being surrounded by their work." Of course, most surgeons she knew were also highly self-involved and egotistical, which was why Maura avoided dating most of them, as well. But, then, most highly intelligent people in high stress jobs tended toward a big of egoism.
"Somewhat costly?" Maura asked with a smile.
Laughing softly, she nodded. "Many people seem to come with their own preconceived ideas about almost everything. They guess, assume, and rarely wait for all the evidence before jumping to conclusions. Simple statistics shouldn't be the cause of myocardial infarction for anyone, however, and it certainly shouldn't come as a surprise given how soon you must have conceived after your first two were born."
