RP: Delta Unit
Who: Sam, Savannah, Jenna, Oliver
Where: the beach
When: December 10, 2012, during morning training
Summary: Sam starts giving directions

While people were getting in the water for their morning swim, Sam called the three members of his new unit. He wondered if G had picked Delta just to annoy, which was possible. It could be an attempt at diverting his annoyance from the fact that he wasn't G's second anymore.

It wasn't working.

"I'm sure you've seen the email," he said, and from the way Savannah was bouncing, he guessed that was a yes on her part. "Queen, you will spend the next two days with Nell, catching up on pop culture, and then you're mine. Or your Savannah's. Unless you have a direct order from me, you listen to her or she will make you regret it."

Savannah chuckled. "Would I do that?" Sam raised an eyebrow. "Okay, I would, but there's no reason to scare him just yet."

"Now, in terms of training, we'll be doing swimming, underwater swimming, but also things like steering boats, marathon swimming, stealth approach," he said. "Because of your powers, I want to include that as well. If you are water, no one can detect you. Of course, we'll have to help with the fishing, which shouldn't be a real problem. Basically, prepare to live in the water. If there are any problems with your wetsuits, let me know. I need to make sure those will keep you warm. We'll also be using scuba ones, with a first layer for deep water immersions. Now, unless there are questions, in the water."

Savannah put on the wetsuit under her dress and then took it off, before running toward Jenna. "Wait up," she said as she pulled her hair up into a pony tail.

She knew that some people required fine gloves. She also knew when it was just easier to get straight to the point. With Jenna, it was always easier to say what she wanted. It might not always go well, but it was better than subtle comments that would invariably be ignored or misunderstood. Savannah was convinced that Jenna didn't even mean to do that. She just wasn't good with subtle.

"I wanted to make sure that you're okay with this assignment, with me being second," she said, straight out. "Also, you'll be partnered with your dad, Is that going to be a problem? Because I know we had that discussion about being his daughter and being in a team, but now, that's pretty much gone. You are his partner, and that's 24/7. In fact, you'll be his swim buddy and let me tell you, that's sacred for a SEAL. There's no more time to be anything less than perfect. I'll help you. It's my job as second to do it, but also as your sister, but if you don't think you can deal with me or Sam, you should speak up now."

Since the ranch, Jenna had learned to appreciate Savannah more and more, and that didn't change with what she now said. She was deeply grateful for the question, and for the bluntness. Maybe that was Savannah having learned how to talk to her as well, or she how to listen or maybe a combination, but as she'd told Troy - she liked honesty and directness a lot more than she ever would niceties. Smiling at Savannah, Jenna shrugged off the concerns.

"I'll be fine," she assured her. "This is work, this is what I'm good at, what I feel at home doing."

"As grateful as I am for you asking, you don't need to worry about this." she added. "I won't let Dad down. I'll have his back."

Savannah chuckled. "I'm not worried about Sam." The man was like some Buddha statue, and nothing touched him. He did his job, expected people to do theirs and wasn't surprised when some didn't.

"I am worried about you, because this isn't work, Jenna. This is it. There's no more being his daughter. Oh sure, there will be dinners and parties, but you will be his partner always, and he will expect you to behave as such all the time, during work hours and non, and when you don't, he will bite your head off, and if something happens to him, G will kill you, and I'm not exaggerating here." For once, there were no smiles. This was work, but it was work that would take over every part of their life. "I want to make sure that you do understand that your life just became work, every second of the day."

Jenna paused, because she could see how serious Savannah was about this, and if she was this serious, then she should at least give it a second thought.

"I'm his daughter by blood, I can't stop being his daughter, but I do understand what you're saying." She looked over at her father, and she knew she could do this technically. She knew she could have his back and do her job. That wasn't the question, though, but if she could live with the rest of the consequences of this.

"I can do this," she said again. "But I'll talk to Dad to make sure we're on the same page," she said. "Thanks."

Savannah left Jenna and ran to where Oliver was all suited up and ready to go. "Hey, give me a moment." Gosh, she even sounded like Sam and G, and that was not a good thing. She always did better when she did things her way.

She smiled at the newest member of their team. "I'm sure this is a lot to take in, in a very short span of time, but if you have any problems, you can talk to me. I've been the official cheerleader for a while, and the one to help civilians adjust. Now, I'm the second of your unit, so really anything you need, my door is always open." She grinned. "You haven't been to power training yet, but both Jenna and I can turn to water, that's what Sam meant about using our powers. Anything happens down there, I can and will make sure that you're okay. Do you have any questions for me?"

Oliver gave her a polite smile. "Thanks. I'm sure things will be fine, once I know what I'm supposed to be doing besides 'swimming'." He was pretty sure this was not the same as diving for food or swimming to escape and evade, nor like reef diving in Hawaii or off the Keys.

"You both turn into water?" Oliver tilted his head at this. Aside from the complete oddity of having powers, all the questions that popped up seemed absurd. He asked them anyway. "Like an amorphous puddle? Rain? Something that comes out of a tap?"

"Swimming is a large part of it. Lots and lots of swimming. Then there's swimming with your hands and feet tied. That's always fun. Now, picking up objects with your mouth while being tied is also lots of fun," she said, chuckling. "Swimming with your partner unconscious is also a cute exercise. I've been doing this for the past two years. I'll help you. There's also diving, steering a boat, but knowing Sam will be starting with the basics."

Savannah laughed. "That sounds strange, but my powers are a little more developed. I've been doing this for a while, but I can turn into water and retain my shape or just be a puddle of water. Either or. I really like to stay in shape, but when I swim in the water, you really can't see anything unless I want you to see something. It's what Sam was referring to when he talked about stealth approach. No radar can detect me."

What Savannah said didn't bring up very good memories. "Your definition of fun must be different than that in my dimension."

Oliver found the power fascinating. "Do you need to breathe? What about your clothing?" She didn't seem to wear much, so modesty wasn't at issue for her.

She reached over and squeezed his arm. "I know it's overwhelming, and the sense of panic is there, but you're not going through this alone, Oliver. We'll do everything together and I will be at your side. Nothing is going to happen to you."

Savannah chuckled. "No, we figured out that I don't need to do it, although I tend to outside, because it's what I'm used to. Anything I touch changes with me, or in this case anything attached to my skin. The molecular change seems to go that far. I can change into anything really. Fire, ice, sand, metal, but I don't show fire with the kids around. They can change too and I don't want them trying it out and setting the house on fire. You can understand that."

"That's not exactly it, but thanks." Oliver wasn't concerned that anything would happen to him. "I once had a mentor who taught me many things. I don't get the sense that it'll be the same as having a partner."

Oliver smiled. "No, I suppose you wouldn't want a fire in the house. By mentioning your children having powers, I'm guessing they're hereditary? Or did they cross over with you and get them?"

"Then what is it?" she asked. "I don't know about mentor, but I've been training as a SEAL for close to two years, but yes, it's different, since there will be expectations. I don't think Sam would take it kindly if you let me die," she said, laughing.

Savannah nodded. "Yes, they are hereditary. All the babies were born here. Most of us have been here for years. We have families, friends. I know it's overwhelming to join a group like us, some of us have been together since the start, but we'll help. I'll help. Gotta take care of my partner."

"Being tied up is not fun, outside of the bedroom," Oliver said. He supposed not letting her die should have been obvious, but it wasn't to him. "I guess I'll find out starting Wednesday, after I learn more about this place from Nell. I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that my home city doesn't exist here."

Oliver chuckled. "Yes, it's a little overwhelming. From one type of group to a completely different type of group will take some getting used to. Tommy's spazzing out."

"I'd rather be tied up outside of the bedroom. I'd have a serious problem if my husband tied me anywhere. If he even could. Now, trying if I can be restrained might be fun. We're still trying to see how they could capture and detain me." She nodded. "I know how it feels. I thought they wanted to kill me when I got here. There were no other civilians and we were in a military base. It wasn't this welcoming."

She chuckled. "You'll get the hang of it, I'm sure, and Tommy is spazzing out, because he's running with a sixty year old woman and Elaine is winning," she pointed out. "Sam will get him in shape."

Oliver couldn't help but grin. Someone wasn't as adventurous as her clothing declared her to be. "How about sticking you in a fire-proof, titanium barrel with a lid?" he suggested.

"Circling a room at parties with a drink in hand is about as much exercise as he's ever gotten. I can empathize," he said. "Hopefully his pride will keep him motivated."

Savannah thought about it. "Maybe, but would it be air tight? Because I can do gas. We're going to start working on different types of gases since they have different properties, but I'll research it and see how that would work. Thanks."

She laughed. "He's going to get along with Brian then. I do parties, he does drinks," she said, chuckling. "Either his pride or Sam will. Don't worry about it. We'll make sure that he's trained, because we don't leave anyone behind and he has to be ready to protect himself. He'll get in shape and he'll learn to shoot. He'll be fine, and if you need help with him, let me know. Anything we can do, we will. Come on, let's go into the water, and let's see what we can do, partner."

There was no more time to talk before going into the water, but once they were out, Jenna walked up to her father. "Dad, do you have some time?" she asked him.

Sam just looked at G. There was a nod from his partner, before Sam's attention was on Jenna. "I have more than a minute," he answered as he opened up his suit and pushed it down to his waist.

"So what's going on?" He had no idea what Jenna was getting at, and instead of assuming it was so much easier to ask. Not that it stopped him from still getting it wrong with his kids, but he tried.

"You know I take being anyone's partner seriously, but there are always different expectations and knowing what your expectations are will make it easier to meet them. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the things we've learned here, or what I've learned as a Marine, but about the unspoken expectations and interpretations that can take time to figure out."

"Also, when Savannah spoke to me earlier, she pointed out that being your partner means I can't be your daughter at the same time. Still I can't stop being your daughter, which complicates matters. I figured if we talk now, we can avoid problems in the future."

Mirror, trip for one, coming now. Every time Sam talked to Jenna or Sean, he knew how Alice must have felt when talking to the Mad Hatter, and he wasn't even considering that he was comparing himself to Alice.

"Just to be clear, I'm not sure what you're talking about. You are my daughter. You don't stop being my daughter. My expectations are the same that always are. You follow the rules, you act honorable and you have your partner's back," he said.

"Maybe we can be a little more specific, because if we're going into details, then there are a lot expectations. Pay attention to the details, never stop learning, don't assume, if you don't know something you ask, don't contradict me or Savannah, don't think that your way is better, if you have suggestions you bring it up to us when not in the field, the team comes first." Sam stopped. "I can give you a lot of expectations, but you should know them by now."

None of what her father said was news to her, it was nothing she wasn't used to dealing with or something she felt strange.

"No, I know those of course," she confirmed. "My question was if and if so how you expect this to effect or change our relationship as father and daughter," she specified.

"Let's be very clear. I expect you to do the things you haven't been doing, either on the job or at home," he said. "Or rather, I expected you to do those things even before, but while I was willing to turn a blind eye when you weren't on my team. Was I pleased with it? No, but it wasn't my unit and when it was personal, it ended up into an argument. I won't be as nice when I'm in charge and you're on my team."

He shook his head. "You don't know those things, though, and if you do know them, you've ignored them. So yes, I do expect you to do those things. As for the rest, there is no separation between father and CO, just like there isn't one between husband and second. You conduct yourself the same always and we're good."

"You think I fail to act honorable?" Jenna asked, because the rest she could at least guess at what her father was hinting at. She didn't agree with everything, especially given the circumstances of some of them, but she also couldn't deny that she had disobeyed the rules when she'd stayed with Dom and she knew she had not always paid the most attention to details. A failure to conduct herself with honor however was worse than not paying attention to detail.

Sam looked her, because of course, she would go there and ignore the rest, but this time he wasn't backing down, not when work was on the line. "I think you failed to do just about everything, only following the letter of the rules ad code of behavior, if that, and ignoring the spirit."

This was not a discussion to be done here, but everyone else was in the water, so Sam went on. "Honor isn't just getting up in the morning and going to work. Honor is about putting the team first. It's about respecting your elders and your superior officers. Honor is doing things for the good of the group and not yourself. So yes, I think you failed on both a business and personal level. Think about that Lead for a Day. You decided to become second because you could do it, you saw the benefits, you didn't think there was a problem. It was all about you and your wants, but never considering the impacts of the rules, what it said about your opinion of G and even Vance, or how the others would feel with a baby around. When we talked about returning to work, it was all about what you wanted to do. Never what was best for Blaze, Dom or the team. When you invited Eric, it was about what you thought was right. It's always about you, Jenna, and I'm sorry that isn't going to fly in my unit. It's always about the other people. Always."

Jenna took a deep breath, holding back her knee jerk reactions. "I can see your point, on almost everything but my returning to work. I always considered what was best for Blaze and Dom and I had this discussion before he was even born."

"Dom never wanted a stay at home wife and I'm a better mother when I work than I was when I was at home. Me not working wouldn't have been the best choice for Blaze or Dom." she answered calmly.

"But I will try to do better to meet your expectations. But given your reservations, perhaps I should ask if you find it acceptable to have me as a partner, or even on your team. Will you ever be able to trust that I'll have your back?"

"Jenna, stop, okay? I gave you plenty of examples, and maybe you did think of them when deciding about going back to work, but considering your track record, excuse me for not considering that possibility, because the damn truth is that you've always worried about yourself and your wants, and this isn't the first time that I've told you that," he said.

Sam shook his head. "You have a power that makes you the perfect fit for this unit and it's why I asked to have you. My reservations would exist anyway, regardless of what team you're on." He sighed. "Look, I'm not the one approaching you about this. Do the job, that's all I expect at this point, because personality isn't changed, no matter what you say or what I want."

The surprise that her father had asked for her should have made her happy, and yet the rest of what he said outweighed any satisfaction she could derive from that.

It was strange, hearing the same thing told to her that she'd heard from Sean just a couple days ago - That her faults ran to the very core of who she was and that there was little she could do to improve. At least Sean had given her a window to replace the door he'd closed, suggestions of what she could do differently which gave her at least the hope that. Her father gave her a generic list of things to do, and then told her that it was beyond her anyway.

It was daunting to know that the two people she cared of most aside from her husband and child had so little faith in her that they deemed her almost incapable of learning from her past mistakes. It made her incredibly hurt, and sad for all of them. Sad that she had let them down so much, disappointed in herself for not seeing it sooner, and hurt that they thought so little about her ability to change.

Jenna had never been very good at hiding what she felt, but she did always try her best to learn what was being taught and she had learned a lot from training here. Pushing back the pain and shock to somewhere deep inside her, she kept it almost entirely out of her face, if not as entirely out of her eyes. She did not snap, she did not defend herself, she did not try to explain. Instead she just nodded. "Understood," she said. "I will do my best and I appreciate you picking me for the team." Even if it was just because of her powers and not because of anything she had any influence over herself.

Hesitating, she wasn't sure if it was worth it, if it was something that would change anything or if he'd take it the wrong way and think it was all about her again, but remembering her conversation with Sean, his suggestion about confiding and opening up, she added:

"For what it's worth, I am sorry for disappointing you. It was never my intention."

"It's not the first time that I'd have picked you for my team," he answered. The only difference was that this time, it was his team and he had a say in the matter. Before, he'd let G makes the decision, because he knew that he was basing his decision on their relationship.

Sam sighed. "You haven't disappointed me, Jenna. I admit that I was upset at the beginning, and I still think that there are times when you could care more about family, but I've accepted that this is who you are. People come in all shapes and forms, and accepting that is part of life. I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't asked me about what I want for a partner, and the truth is that I have what I want from a partner. His name is G, and no matter how many partners we've changed since getting here, no one will be him.

"I'm not saying this to be mean or because you're inferior in some ways or because we're perfect. None of that would be true. G and I have plenty of problems, but we've learned to deal with our idiosyncrasies, we know each other's weaknesses and we balances them out." He shrugged. "I guess if you want to know what I want from a partner, you look at G."

"I know," Jenna said, but I have a feeling last time your views of me were probably different." A lot had been different back then.

"Dad, you just told me that you think I'm so selfish and self absorbed that you doubt I'll ever be able to change or do better. How can that not be a disappointment?" she asked.

"I do care about family, I know it might not always seem like it and my way of showing it is different and not as obvious but I do care about all of you. When I ask you what you need, it's not because I can't think of things to do but because I don't want to assume that you want help and yes, I know it's not the best way to show that you care. I already had this conversation with Sean yesterday."

The nodded at the rest. "Okay, I can try that. I really do want to do well."

"Last time I picked you because you were my daughter, which is why G and Morgan made the decision. It would have been a decision based on what I felt instead of work," Sam said. "This time, I picked you because of your skill and not for any other reasons."

Sam sighed, because he was never going to explain this. "It's who you are, Jenna. You don't like people, you do't particularly want to be bothered by them, and that's who you are. Would I pefer that you were more open and caring? Sure, I would. I think it would make life better for everyone, you included. Do I accept that it's who you are? Yes, just like I accept that your brother trusts everyone and will always give them a second chance even when he shouldn't. Do I like it? The answer is no in both cases, but that doesn't disappoint me.

"See? This is where we stop agreeing. I don't think you care about family. Actually that's not true either. You care about the people you decide are family. You're the one who couldn't be bothered to get G a gift for his certification or to notice that he's never comfortable with strangers in the house and brought Eric home when even your brother's boyfriend wasn't allowed. You couldn't be bothered with Savannah until you decided that you were friends. You haven't really been close to Renko or Bolton, but then you turn around and get upset when I say that Dom will always be family for as long as you want him, as if he'd have to be invited if you two broke up, and that would never happen, by the way. You went as far as to claim that we're related to him by blood though Blaze, but Blaze is and we aren't. You decide who's family and who's not and when they become family. Now that I mind, especially when it comes to G, because I've told you from day one that he's fover. There's no breaking up." They'd have to die for their relationship to be over.

"And for the record, no one needs help in this place. We do things because we want to help. We didn't need Savannah to cook. Deeks didn't need me help with the kids after Savannah left. People help because it's nice to help each other, not because there's any real need." Strangely enough, having her on the field was not something that bothered him. "I'm sure you'll do fine out there."

Now that did feel better, even if she might have wished that skill wasn't a power she'd been given by some random event but something she'd gotten through hard work. But, as much as she hated it, she supposed it was up to her to become more skilled at using that power, and try to see a point with it. She supposed if she looked at Savannah, she couldn't deny that the other woman had a lot of use out of hers.

"I'm not going to defend the time it took for me to get around to things, I know I could have been more accepting than I was. I felt as if you were replacing us with a new family, like you were replacing me with a new, better daughter. It's not an excuse, and I know it does not make my actions right. I especially shouldn't have taken out my annoyance on them but I did. I can't change that. I can try to learn from my mistakes, but I can't change the past."

"I do know that you and G are forever. It took longer than it should, but I do get that."

"I get that, Jenna, but you're still doing it. You've done it with Eric. You've done it with Bolton. I get that you like to feel comfortable with people before you accept them, but sometimes you can't." There was no point in arguing more about this, because it wasn't going to happen anymore now that everyone was practically married.

"Unless there's anything else, it's time for breakfast."
