RP: Nate, Eliot and April
Who:Nate, Eliot and April
Where:On route to Indiana
When: November 17
Summary:It's time to find a home

Getting the car was easy. Avoiding alcohol because he needed to drive the car to the motel less so, but the moment they were heading out, April was behind the wheal and he could take a well deserved drink before it was his turn behind the wheel. After what had happened back home he refused to sit behind the wheel of a car after having had alcohol. If he was ever tempted the image of that little girl in the hospital - nearly dead because of him - was all it took to get him to stay clear of it.

Now though, April was driving and he didn't need to worry for a while. They'd made up a schedule and he knew when he'd have to stop drinking in order for it to be safe. With a flask he'd gotten himself yesterday he could sip his whiskey in the car. Not enough to get him completely drunk (or he'd never get sober in time for his turn) but just enough to make the long drive a bit more tolerable.

They were heading to Indiana, La Porte or Michigan City was still being decided on. They were both small towns, both had a mostly white population, a lot of children's families and the cost of living was quite low apparently. Personally, Nate thought both sounded boring. He missed the city. La, Boston, New York - where you could hide by being one of the crowd. The fact that his phone told him that both places had a fair few bars did make him feel slightly better about the change.

Of course the big perk was not having to do what he was told anymore. Finally he could get some control over his own life again. April might envision them all sharing a place to live, saving up their money until they could buy a farm, but Nate had no such intentions. He wanted a place of his own, and a business of his own on the side of whatever job he had. He'd find some way to help people again, he just needed some time and information, some knowledge of the area, then he'd find a way to help people again.

"What kind of jobs were you thinking of?" he asked them, as he used his phone to look at what available jobs they had in these towns.

Nate smiled at the answer. "No surprises there," he said, though it was mostly for himself. He wondered how Eliot's vision would evolve, and how it would affect him, but that was something they could think about in five days. If he still didn't have his vision back by then.

"Something to do with offices, administrations, sales. It depends on what I can find, but anything that doesn't require quite so much training."

"What about you April?" he asked.

"I'm not sure," she answered. "I want to say a doctor's office, secretary, front desk - I will never be a doctor, but it would give me access to medical supplies and it's probably the closest I'll ever get to being what I'm trained to be."

She looked at Eliot from the corder of her eye. "What do you think? How big of a risk is it? With background checks and well everything. Would it be possible?"

"Vance is a jackass, but he's not going to hang us out to dry. His backgrounds for us will be solid, to pass needed checks," Eliot said. "As long as we stay clean, they'll stay clean." Another reason why they had fake licenses, in case dirty was necessary.

"They got any martial arts places there, Nate?" After April had compiled her list, they'd narrowed it down to state and then location. There were shooting ranges where they were heading, to satisfy that requirement.

That was a relief at least. April knew she'd never work as a doctor again, not for real, but she didn't want to give up on medicine completely. She was good at paper work, she'd worked as Derek's assistant when she'd first been hired back after her mistake and she'd been good at it. She'd enjoyed it even if it was a surgeon she wanted to be. The fact that she'd be around medical supplies was another perk, one they might need some day.

If she could even find a job at a doctor's office, that was, but then she needed some time to sit down and look for it. From what she'd scanned yesterday there were at least places open at nursing homes and the likes. Not as good, but good enough if it had to be.

From the back of the car she heard Nate's 'yes, in Michigan City,' and she looked at Eliot. "With all of us working there will be less time for training," she said, since it was something that had been on her mind since they decided to leave.

"Granted my training is limited right now as it is, but we need to make a schedule for it - to get as much in as possible. Not just physical training either." They'd need a place to work on their powers in peace without anyone being able to see. Especially Nate who had just got his. "Then there's evacuation procedures, memorizing the routes out of the place we end up in. We also need to decide what kind of place we want to live in. Do we want to rent or buy? And do we want a house or an apartment? There are perks with both."

Eliot's lips curved with fondness. "It's dependent on our jobs, yes, but we'll get some sort of schedule together, even if we have to do things on our own. Unlike before, we don't need to go everywhere in pairs. In fact, it's more suspicious if we do," he said.

"I vote buy, because we'll get our money back. Renting doesn't save us anything. There's less privacy, too." Eliot knew if they had to evacuate they'd lose the equity on the house, but if that didn't happen they could use it to add funds to their savings for a ranch. "A lesser chance of bystanders getting caught in the crossfire not being in an apartment complex."

April smiled. "True, but then some training still needs to be done as a group. Wherever we settle on living we need an evacuation plan."

She thought about what he said. "Do we want to start out buying though?" she asked. "Or wait until Eve is born? We don't know if and how much she'll show of whatever powers she has. We might have to move in a hurry because of her."

"Not that I mind planning," Nate said, speaking up from the back of the car. "But you're both getting ahead of yourselves."

"It's five more days before we even get there and we haven't even settled on which town to choose, let alone seen the places. We don't know how welcome we'll be, how we'll like it, if we decide it's safe to stay - all of that needs to be decided before we can decide on where to live."

"What we do need to focus on is a place to rent when we get there, and a reason why a married couple wants a middle aged man to live with them, even if it's just temporary."

"Temporary?" April asked, sounding confused. "It's not safe-"

"Nothing we can do can be safe," Nate cut her off. "If I live with you, it's strange and people might get suspicious, if I don't then we're separated. There is little to be done about the fact that no option is safe the way Hannah would want them to be."

"The important focus needs to be on our covers, and making sure they're secure when we get there."

There was a reason why Nate made the had plans for the team back home. Eliot shook his head at himself. "You're right. We should actually get there first. Take a look around. We have almost thirty days before we gotta get rid of this car, so we have the time to change our minds."

Nate nodded though no one could see him. "Give me a day or so and I'll have our covers figured out. We'll have plenty of time to get in character before we get there."
