John and Savannah
It was funny. John had had other birthdays without his mom. And, he had thought she'd forgotten his sixteenth...they might actually have forgotten his last one, since he couldn't remember it. But, today, he really felt it, that empty spot where his mom should have been. In a way, he didn't really feel like celebrating.
But, it was his birthday and it had been important to both his mom and Derrick that he celebrate. When there are things to celebrate, they should be celebrated. That's what Derrick had said before he'd taken John to get ice cream and to show him his father. John had gotten a family for his sixteenth birthday.
Well, before he killed someone and was attacked by his protector.
For his eighteenth, he got an awful lot of cake. When he'd mentioned it to Savannah, he'd thought he'd just get some of the younger of them together and buy a cake from the commissary or something. A half gallon of ice cream to go with it. He hadn't expected an actual party, even a simple one. And he didn't know where to start with those three cakes. They were a far cry from what he suspected Cameron would have brought home if she'd been able to.
He couldn't even decide where to start with the cakes, so he grabbed a soda first and went to find Savannah. "Hey. Thanks for this. In addition to help eating the cakes, I think you may have to help me pick which one to eat first," he added with a chuckle.
