RP: Eliot/April/Nick/Nate
Who: Eliot/April/Nick/Nate
Where: Their house
When: 11-4-12
Summary: Security and other conversation.

Friday had been moving day and Saturday the wake, but by Sunday Eliot couldn't wait any longer to have a discussion about security. It hadn't been an issue before, but now that he was (hopefully temporarily) blind and Nick was with them, it needed to be discussed.

Eliot sat at the kitchen table, gauze and sunglasses covering his eyes, and a hat shading them as well. April was putting out lunch, with Nick being ordered to set the table. Nate joined them when April called.

"House security," Eliot said without preamble, once everyone was tucking into the meal. If people were listening in, so be it. It wasn't as if April's pregnancy was a secret. "If we get attacked here, Nick you're in charge of getting April out and to safety no matter what. You got that?"

Nick nodded, and answered between shoveled bites of food, "Yeah, I got it." April first, just like back at the ranch and when they were on the second floor at the school. Nick could do that, no problem.

Eliot went on. "Nate, you're with me unless you see Nick needs backup. April, I know what you can do, and we'll try to stick together, but getting Eve and you to safety is everyone's priority, including your own. Understand?"

If there was one good thing with recent events, it was having Nick back in the house. In fact the loss made her appreciate his presence even more, as it reminded her of how quickly things could be lost. She was careful not to fall into the same pattern as before, but if she cooked food that she knew Nick liked, she couldn't really be blamed, could she? If she couldn't spoil him in any other way, or hug him the way she wanted to, then she could cook and pretend it was all a coincidence that it was food he liked.

She had cried on and off since getting the news, though she tried to keep it private. Enough people were in much deeper pain over their deaths, and she had no right - not in comparison to their loss. It still made her value the family she had here more - and whether he saw it as such or not - to her Nick would always be a part of that family.

She looked at Eliot as he went on, and she didn't like Nick having that responsibility. "We get out together," she said. "You know I'm not leaving your side unless you're safe or dead no matter what you say." Without his sight, Eliot was the weakest link, and the one most in need of protection. He might hate it but until his new eyes worked, which she was sure they would eventually, she wasn't leaving his side unless forced.

"No," Eliot said sharply. "You will get yourself and Eve to safety no matter what. I will not be the cause of another child's death." He glared in her direction, and for a brief moment he could see her skeleton again. The sight of it shocked him, and she disappeared back into the gauze-covered blur.

Nick piped up. "Um, who's Eve?"

Moving until she stood by him, April reached for his hand. "Eliot, I won't risk her life, but I can't leave you behind either."

She turned to look at Nick, smiling at him. "This is Eve," she said, touching her stomach.

"How about this," she told Eliot. "I promise that I'll do everything in my power us out, if you promise that you'll do everything to get out too."

"Oh. Hi, Eve." Nick waved at April's stomach and went back to eating.

Eliot scowled. "I'm not planning to let myself get killed. We don't know how long this will last," he motioned at his eyes, "and have to take that into account. It's a hell of a lot easier for me not to go nuts with worry if I know you're taking care of Eve and yourself first, that all ya'll are. We've got four kids without mothers here. We don't need to add to that casualty list."

"I just don't want her to grow up without a father either," April said. "She'll need someone who she can wrap around her little finger," she said.

"Hopefully this won't last too long. You're already better with handling light. I don't think we'll need the gauze for more than a day or two more." She still thought, and hoped, that once his sight returned it would be normal.

Just then, she felt Eve kick hard, and she brought Eliot's hand down to where she was kicking. "I think even Eve wants to remind you that you're important to her."

Eliot felt a little kick against his palm, and he sighed. "I know." He kept his hand on April's belly, mourning the loss of seeing the acrobatics Eve was performing with the return of his eyes.

That wasn't the reaction April had expected, and she could see from the frown on Nate's forehead that he too had expected something different. Instead of saying something, she squeezed Eliot's hand, offering her support without words.

"We'll make it out," she said. "I promise.

It was a while after dinner that Nate got a chance to speak to Eliot alone. April was taking a bath while Nick was...somewhere or another in the house. Nate couldn't say he was keeping track of the young man.

Eliot was in the living room when Nate arrived with a glass of whiskey in hand. He took a seat in the sofa and looked at Eliot.

"When I first felt Sam kick..." he paused, taking a sip. "Let's just say sighing wasn't my reaction." The question wasn't asked, but it was there if Eliot wanted to tell him if what was going on. No matter what was going on in the rest of the world, the reminder of his child should have made him happier, not more upset.

Eliot grunted. "Was seein' her do all kinds of things before." He wasn't exactly rolling with the punches this go around. Too many things piling up at once, making him question their decision again.

"And now you can't." It was a statement, not a question. "I don't know, I never got to see what Sam did before he was born, but it seems maybe this is one of those things where you might want to be happy at what you do have rather than miss what you did have."

"If April's right, and you have no reason to believe she's not, then you'll get your normal eyesight back with time. You'll be able to look at your wife and eventually your daughter in ways you haven't been able to." He shrugged, taking another sip of the whiskey.

"So how much does this mood have to do with Savannah and John dying?" He hadn't known them well, he'd been here too little for that, but he'd known them enough to know how special they were. The one his heart went out to most though was Callen. Savannah wasn't his daughter by blood, but by heart, and he knew only too well what it was like to lose a child.

Eliot knew it, too, and he'd been fine on Thursday until they'd gotten the news. Count on Nate to perceive what was at the basis of things. "Probably too much. I'm thinking we made the wrong decision in coming here. Vance sent them off to their deaths, and we don't know how or why. We know how all the others died -- word gets around -- if not exact detail at least the inferred circumstances. How could these two both get killed?"

"I couldn't answer any of those questions," Nate said. "But I doubt you're the only one asking them." He couldn't imagine the families and loved ones of them not asking the same thing.

"I can't tell you if you did the right or wrong thing, only you will now that, but maybe regretting it isn't the answer either. You'll just have to make the most of things, play the hand you're dealt, and think about whether or not to make another decision next time."

"One thing to consider though, if you had left, you wouldn't have gotten to spend this last time with them. You wouldn't even know that they're dead. You also wouldn't be looking at the prospect of getting your sight back again."

"Besides, here, you have the chance to help Savannah protect her children when she's not around to do it. The others might not know what you're capable of, and will be capable of once you get your sight back again, but I do. You'll keep those children safe just like you'll keep Eve and April safe."

Eliot grunted, this time with agreement. He needed to pull his head out of his ass and do what needed to be done, with or without eyesight.
