RP: New Losses
Who: Leon, Savannah, John, Callen, Sam, Morgan, Emily, Elaine, Brian, Reese, Marty
Where: the base
When: November 1, 2012
Summary: there are two more losses

If the attack hadn't been enough, now the city was wrestling with Mother Nature. Three days later, the subway was only partially recovered. Brooklyn was completely cut off from Manhattan. The Southern part of Manhattan was without electricity. Buildings, tunnels and subways were still flooded. Hospitals had been evacuated. The police force was spread throughout the city, preventing the looting, dealing with safety and Halloween. The marathon was coming up on Sunday. The elections were coming up. The city was stretched to its limit and they had to do something.

Leon called Savannah and John as soon as the work day started. He had a plan; he always did, but this time he needed someone other than his ADs and SSAs to carry it out. "Do you understand everything I told you?" he asked, after he explained what he needed.

Both young people nodded.

"It's very dangerous. You need to be careful."

Savannah smiled. "Of course we will."

"Good luck." With those words, he sent them out.

The call came during his lunch time. Not from his agents, but from Virginia PD. Leon was up and moving on a military plane less than a hour later. His agents had failed. He had failed and now there were two more dead in his conscience and families to inform. He called Kinney ahead of time, asking for both ADs, both SSAs, Elaine, Reese, Deeks and Kinney to join him as soon as he got there.

The meeting was in his office. He got there just moments before the rest did. He was sitting behind his desk. There were two metal containers on his desk: one butterfly pink, the other in silver. "Mr. Deeks, Mr. Kinney if you could take a sit." There was the couch for others, which Elaine used, but most liked to stand, and he knew better than to argue today.

"I am sorry to say that Mrs. Deeks and Mr. Baum were killed this morning. I've flown down to ensure that there weren't any mistakes. Due to the problems we've had and the attempts at capture, I ensured that they were cremated before any DNA could be taken. Mr. Deeks, a Catholic priest was present, since I assumed your wife would have wanted it. I am truly sorry for your loss."

Marty was still working on the whole faith and belief in a higher power thing. He and God were making overtures, but they weren't best buds or anything yet. He trusted his gut. And his gut was telling him that this set-up was wrong. Vance asking him and Brian to sit with the others all present...something was wrong.

"What?" It was the first sound he could make after Vance finished speaking. He had to be hearing this wrong. Glancing at G and Sam, neither seemed to be letting him in on the catch. "How-?" How was it even possible? It... He looked back at Vance. "No. You can't...She can't...no."

He barely turned his head before he felt hot, wet trails sliding down his cheeks. The sound of the door slamming open as G left the room didn't even register. It was hard enough to breathe. Focusing on anything but the sudden deep ache in his chest was impossible. This wasn't supposed to happen. He was supposed to keep her safe, they were going to raise two kick ass little princesses with their mother's smile and his sense of humor. They were suppose to...they were supposed to do so much.

She couldn't just...

That couldn't be her, his Savannah, in a...a jar on Vance's desk.

G was inured to lose. He'd been losing people since he was a child. Parents, siblings, foster families, friends, team members, colleagues, mentors, he'd been there and done that and learned to move on quickly. But, at Vance's words, he froze in shock. He planned for every eventuality, but this hadn't been one of them. He hadn't ever planned on this angle. It was one possibility he'd never let himself consider, one of a very few he refused to think about.

Marty breaking down, changing from a wisecracking cop into a lost little boy in a heartbeat, was what broke through G's mind, shattered the ice holding him immobile.

And then he couldn't stay there. He couldn't stay another moment in that room and be a lead, take care of these people. Responsibility be damned. This was his girl, his girl, the girl who'd made him love her, who wormed her way into his life and his heart and made him smile. She was his as much as any child that could have been born to him and now she was...

G couldn't even think the word. He just left. Turned on his heel, slammed his way through the door of Vance's office and made it about five feet before he gave in to the violence inside himself, using the wall as a punching bag, his power erratic as it lent power to some punches and fled for others, the word 'no' punctuating every few.

Sam couldn't afford to feel now. There were too many others who would feel the impact of what had just happened and he needed to be strong for them.

As much as he wanted to be with G, there was Deeks to consider, the man who'd been relying on Savannah for the past two years. He sent a quick text to Robert first. Savannah and John dead. Find G outside of Vance's office Now! This would have to do for now, at least until he could deal with Deeks

He squeezed Deeks' shoulder as he crouched next to him. "We should go get the kids and take you home."

"No, we should be told what happened?" Brian put in. "What the fuck happened? Why did you sent two fucking kids out there, huh? He's-" He stopped, because he'd be dammed if he was going to cry in front of these people. "John was still a teenager and she was a mother and so young. What the hell is wrong with you?"

Leon's eyes didn't waver from Brian's. "They did what they had to do, Mr. Kinney, and I'm sorry that I can't give you the details, but they were both aware of the importance of what they were doing. They had a mission-"

"No." It was Derek's turn to interrupt. "You don't get to talk about missions," he said coldly as he stood up. "John's mission had nothing to do with whatever you made him do. John's mission was to stay alive. You- Look around you. You would have had plenty of volunteers to take their place. Any one of us would have gladly changed places with them, and if you had sent us, maybe there would be no deaths."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Reese, but I needed their skills," Leon said.

"Yeah, and that ended so well." He shook his head, before walking out. He was not going to deal with this shit.

Marty looked up at Sam, the weight of the other man's hand on his shoulder holding him in the room. But, he couldn't stomach what he was hearing. He was a cop and this was so wrong. Loyalty to Sam and G aside, there was so much wrong with this, Marty couldn't even defend it in his own mind. He agreed with Brian and Reese.

"What they had to do?" he asked, getting angry. It would have been better if the Director had never spoken. Pulling away from Sam, he stood in front of the Director's desk. "What they had to do was live. What Savannah had to do was see her two little girls grow up, to hear them say 'mamma' for the first time. Reese is right, there isn't anyone in this room who wouldn't have gone in their place. It's what we do." He slammed his open hand on the desk in front of him. "We're cops and agents and SEALs. This is what we do. We don't put the people we love in the line of fire when there are others who can do the job, when we can do the job, when we should be the ones doing the job."

He pushed off of the desk and suddenly realized he was shaking. Maybe G and Reese had the right of it. Get out of this room. Turning to Sam, he shook his head. "You're going to have your hands full with the rest of the family and I...can't. She'd want me to...but, I can't. I'll get the girls and go home and..." He shook his head again, eyes still as full of tears as anger. "I don't know. But, I can't stay here without doing something I'll regret later."

Like forcing his way into Vance's head and doing what HE had to do.

"Maybe Brian can give me a hand, if he wants." John had meant a lot to Savannah. She'd want Marty to look after him if she couldn't. It'd be easier than focusing on her loss. It would keep it from being real a little longer.

"Go. You and Kinney can take care of the girls. I'll check in with you later." He had no intention of leaving Deeks alone tonight. Or anyone else.

Brian wanted to protest, say that he had better things to do, but the only thing he could think of was taking every fucking pill he had in his possession and never come down from the high. Maybe he should do just that. "What?" He snapped, when he felt someone touch him. "If you tell me I should talk, I'm going to fucking hit you," he said when it realized that it was Morgan.

"No, but Deeks could use the help," Derek said softly.

"So does Derek," Brian answered. Not that he was planning on helping Derek. He had no idea what to tell the man. They had a strange alliance that rested on John, but now John was gone.

"I'll deal with Reese. You go with Marty." There was plenty to deal with at the moment, and he was already thinking ahead, because this time, Callen wouldn't be of any help.

Marty stopped and waved Derek away. He knew the man was trying to help. But, there was no helping. Marty put his own hand lightly on Brian's shoulder, removing it again after a second, needing only to draw Brian's attention. "They cared about each other," he said quietly. "She adopted him as a little brother as soon as he arrived and that meant something to both of them. They'd want us to help each other. You don't need to help me with the girls unless you want to. But, you do need to get out of here. Let them do whatever they're going to do. Neither of us really cares, do we? They'll do what they have to do," he bit out bitterly. "Come with me. Let's get out of here and leave them to it."

If Brian wanted to be on his own when they got out of that room, Marty would let him. He wasn't up to fighting anyone else's battles when he was staving off his own. But, leaving Brian here seemed like insult added to injury. The man had always been there for Savannah when she asked. The least Marty could do was have his back now when they had both lost the people they'd loved.

Or maybe it was just easier to bury his own pain in those cop instincts. Serve and Protect.

If only he'd been able to protect her.

Brian didn't want to be logical, not right now, but the hole that he was feeling right now was going to destroy him. As long as he could stay angry, then he'd be fine. Anger gave you a reason to keep going, but he couldn't be angry at Deeks, not when he was talking about Savannah and John.

He nodded, because Deeks was right. He didn't give a damn about the arrangements they wanted "Yeah, okay, let them do what the fuck they want. Let's go." Except that was wrong too. He stopped again and turned to Vance. "Don't you dare plan a funeral for them. None of your bullshit."

"Whatever you and Mr. Deeks want," Leon answered.

Brian snorted. "We want them alive."

Robert/G

Robert teleported the moment he read the message. He didn't need explanations about what happened or why Sam couldn't help. Those would come later. For now, he needed to get to his brother.

Finding G wasn't difficult. He wasn't hiding as the wall was soon discovering. "G. Come on, G, stop that." He was about to put himself between his brother and the wall, but he had no problem hooking his arms with his brother from behind, although he had to wait when he wasn't using his power.

"Stop it," he said softly, lips to G's ear. "Hurting yourself isn't going to help anyone and she wouldn't want that. She'd hug you and tell you that it was going to be all right." And he was going to act like an emotional mess if he thought about all the things Savannah would say, with a smile on her face and an optimism that defied the odds. "I'm going to let you go, but don't disappear on me. Please."

His brother's arrival didn't even register. If he'd been at all aware of things around him, like he should have been, he wouldn't have been taken surprise by the arms that were suddenly there. But, he wasn't aware and he was taken by surprise and, not expecting Robert, his first instinct was to fight that grip.

But, even as he struggled against those arms, he finally heard his brother's voice. More than that, he heard the words. And the realization he'd never again get one of those hugs that he'd fought against for so long and then come to welcome took the fight out of him completely. When Robert let go, G did something he'd only ever done once before, back when he'd finally realized he wasn't alone, he had family of his own, blood family in the person of his brother. Turning around, he buried his face in Robert's shoulder just in time to muffle the first broken sob.

Robert had once told G that he didn't hug and that they weren't a family that hugged, but he closed his arms around his brother like a protective shield, and then teleported them to G's house. No one else needed to see this.

"It's okay, G. I'm right here. I'm not going to leave you. We're going to deal with this as a family. Me and you." He wasn't sure why he was even saying it. Nothing they did would help. Nothing they could think of would bring her back to life, but he could give G the comfort he needed, the hugs that Savannah would have provided. "We'll make it through."

G clung to his brother as he fell apart in ways he hadn't done for as long as he could remember. If he could have remembered at all. For what seemed like forever, his mind went blank, just nothing but pain and heartache and a thousand variants he couldn't have named if he tried. The only physical reality he was fully cognizant of was his brother's presence.

"She's gone." The words were barely audible to his own ears, voice thick with emotion and broken by sobs he'd deny on any other day but didn't give a crap about just then. He didn't care about anything. His girl was gone and it felt like her passing had sucked all the air from the world. She's gone. They were the only two words that remained clear in his head. They were like a never-ending litany and he couldn't have said how many repetitions were spoken aloud and how many were just sounds echoing in the hollows of his head.

The violent sobbing eventually subsided, though he couldn't seem to stop the tears still flowing freely. He wanted that comforting numbness, but all he felt was a deep, gaping hole where Savannah had been. "She's gone," he whispered without lifting his head. "My girl's gone, Rob. I can't-"

"I know, G. I'm so sorry." Robert didn't understand the bond between G and Savannah, but it was there, unmistakable to anyone with eyes. Then again, his own mother wasn't really his mother, so maybe it wasn't that difficult to understand.

"I know it hurts, like everything has been ripped out of you and you can't even breathe." He kissed his brother's temple softly. "I understand, G, and I'm here. I'm here no matter what you need."

Robert sighed, wishing that there was anything he could say to make things better, but there wasn't. "You know I can't come up with a single positive thing to say, but I know she would. She would want you to smile and keep going. She'd tell you how much her girls and Deeks are going to need you. She'd tell you that you have to work harder now to make sure that you keep them safe, but also that you keep them happy. She'd want you to live for her, too, and not just survive. She'd been talking about the twins getting ready to walk, we'll take pictures and when they grow up, we'll tell them how it was their mommy's work that made them walk faster than the other babies, faster than they probably should. We're going to keep her alive in our hurts for her and for her family."

"I can't." Shaking his head, G finally looked up at his brother and took a step back. "I know I have to...but, I can't...I walked out...I can't...not right now." G wished he could just focus on Marty and the twins, put his mind on work and getting things done. He wished he could think of anything but the gnawing emptiness, but the idea of connecting, of not shutting down entirely...he couldn't.

Every instinct in his being was screaming for him to pull away, shut everything and everyone out, just to make the pain go away. It was only because it was Robert, one of three...now two...people G was incapable of shutting out, that he wasn't putting up every wall he had and forcing the solitude.

"I don't know what I need, Rob. I don't...I don't do this. I don't let people...and she..." G just stopped. Talking wasn't a solid physical possibility yet. He had no words. No thoughts. Everything was just feeling and feeling and more feeling and, fuck, he just wanted it to stop. All of it. It was too much and he wasn't strong enough to survive this.

"It's okay, G. It takes time. It's fine." It took a lot longer than G might want. Robert was still dealing with his own mother's death over two years ago, always finding a reason or another to postpone dealing with it.

"You'll be okay. I know it's hard and I know you don't let them in, but you did with her and it hurts." Robert framed G's face. "It's okay to hurt, because you are human and she meant the world to you. Now, why don't we go and pick Liam up? You can help me feed him and bathe him, and spend time with him." Concentrating on the practicalities always helped. "I'll even go and pick him up if you want to stay here. We'll spend the rest of the day together." At least while Sam did whatever that needed to be done. "Is that okay?"

G closed his eyes and rested his forehead against Robert's, one hand grasping at his brother's shoulder. Swallowing hard, he tried to nod, but his head didn't seem to work. He wasn't sure he could look at his innocent, helpless nephew and not lose it. He'd promised to keep them safe, promised to keep her safe. Maybe not aloud, he'd never do that. But, in his heart, he'd sworn to keep his family safe and he'd failed. He'd failed and the daughter of his heart had paid the price for it.

But, he couldn't seem to bring himself to turn his brother away. Too many people. Too many he'd let in and now he couldn't push them out. He was too entangled and the thought of trying now just made it all worse.

Eventually, he managed to nod. "Yeah, okay." Opening his eyes, he looked up. "Go get him. It's okay."
