RP: Nick/Sam
Who: Nick/Sam
Where: Team Center
When: 10-31-12 well before the party
Summary: Nick's assignment, turning in

Nick told Sam he'd finished his assignment and they arranged to meet in a secure room. Nick had shared the location, date, time, and other things with those going individually, tacking on that this was Sam's assignment to him so they knew it might not fly.

"Okay, you gave me the mission to go to Midtown Comics by Grand Central," Nick began. "Just so you know, I would totally reject this location if this was just a trip to go buy comics. The store's all glass, on the second floor with only two narrow egress points. The surrounding buildings are taller. There's no back alleys or roof access. All the bad guys need to do is surround the corner, block the two stairwells, and come into the store, and we're either caught or dead. And since we don't want to be either of those things, there'd be a shootout, powers would need to be used, and there'd be a pile-up of bystander casualties. So this comic book shop would be off my list of potential locations to visit."

Nick gestured in the general direction of where Derek would be. "But I talked to Derek and he said this assignment was to see how well I can plan for the location given with as many people coming as want to come. He also said to talk to you next time I had questions, but I didn't have questions until I talked to Derek and he pointed out that I was looking at the mission wrong. 'No persons assigned' didn't mean that it was a solo mission like I thought."

Even though he'd worked with this group for almost a year, he'd done solo missions for four years prior to that and all his mission plans had been just for himself.

"But anyway, it's still a bad place to go, but if we're going, here's how we're doing it," Nick said. He didn't pull out a piece of paper or his laptop, but recited from memory. "Date: Sunday, November 18th, to give time for Sandy clean up and because ground zero still needs to factor into going into the city. The time at the store is two hours, from 1300 to 1500. We'll take the subway there and back, leaving at 1200 and returning at 1600. There's six of us going, so we'll stick in one team but everyone will have a partner, since half the team is a designated asset. I have Eric, Dom has Sheldon, and Marty has Derek."

Nick moved on to the escape. "If the crap hits the fan, and we do manage to get out of the store unscathed, we'll get to the subway. There's Grand Central itself, and an entrance outside the station for lines four, five, and six. Line seven is on 42nd Street. Heading northbound on Lexington from the store, line six is on 51st and Lexington and lines E and M are on 53rd and Lexington. Then there's Time Square west/northwest five blocks away, which has subway access on 41st and 7th with lines one, two and three; lines B, D, F, M at Bryant Park on 41st and Avenue of the Americas; and the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd which is line A, C, and E. There are two N, Q, R subway entries, one on 49th and 7th and the other on Broadway and 41st, but those lines lead back here if you get on the southbound and cross out of the city. The B, D, F, M lines also head this way if you get the southbound to far."

Nick summed up with, "Everyone should have a cap with them. I'd like everyone to have reversible jackets, too, but some people won't have them. If a bag is brought, it shouldn't have anything in it that can't be ditched," he said.

"And that's it." Nick looked at Sam expectantly. "How'd I do?"

Sam snorted. "Welcome to New York City. You've just described every building in Manhattan, every comic book store, every theater, every thing. Nothing has a back alley, all the windows are glass and most small stores only have two entry points unless you are talking about a department store. So unless we never go into a store in the city, you will have to go into buildings that look just like that. It's also New York, legal population of over 8.2 million people, with an estimated population of close to sixteen million with commuters and tourists on any given day, most of those on the island of Manhattan. You will always have bystanders."

He looked at Nick trying to understand what he was even saying about Morgan. "No one is allowed to go out alone. Ever. So you would never get a mission by yourself, and I did say at the beginning that you would get assignment to organize trips. I never said you were getting missions. It's homework."

He listened to the plan and nodded. "Pretty good, except that with a bus and two trains on a Sunday schedule, you are looking close to two hours each way. On a Sunday, you might see if Derek can get a car. It'd only take you forty minutes or so. If you get to Port Authority, why even bother with the subway? Why not get a bus out to Jersey? And you want to get those lines South bound, because you want to get to the Path to get to Jersey, which is better than sitting on a bus. Other than that. It's a good plan."
