RP: Nick/Derek Morgan
Who: Nick/Derek M.
Where: Team Center
When: 10-30-12
Summary: Nick's assignment is Danger Level - Red.

Nick made arrangements to meet with Derek over lunch about his mission, and once the scrambler was on, Nick got to the point. "Sam gave me my mission assignment to go to Midtown Comics by Grand Central. That place is an agent's nightmare. One narrow stairwell entrance as far as I can see, and the whole place is glass enclosed. I'd never consider this for a casual outing location. So I'm going with the presumption that this mission is either a contact or retrieval one.

"No one's assigned to go with me, so I want to pick you as my second. I'm looking at November 18th from 1300 to 1500, to give plenty of time for the City to recover from Sandy and because there's still ground zero to consider. How many people can you grab in your astral projection at once?"

Derek smiled, but shook his head. "Sam isn't handing out missions. He's handing out places where people want to go and it's up to you to organize the trip. The mission is planning the trip. It's about teaching people what to do when they want to go out."

He leaned back, because with Nick, it was always about figuring out his thinking than getting the assignment complete. "Even if you were right, why do you think I would use my powers when the entire goal is to keep them a secret from ... everyone? In fact, why do you think we'd give you the lead if one of the more experienced people were able to do it?"

"This isn't a place I would go or would approve of going if I'm organizing the trip. A glass building shorter than the surrounding buildings that maybe has two doors total? Forget it. If this is a pleasure trip I'm organizing, I'd pick some other comic book store." Nick had his parameters. Protect assets first. Protect non-assets second. Do not put anyone in danger on purpose or on accident.

"If it was an emergency, you'd use it," Nick replied. "I'd factor that into any plan. And you have the right type of power I'd consider using for the mission." He frowned. "I wasn't requesting you to lead, but to second me on this. You know, partners."

"Okay, fine. The Directors told you he wants to bring people there. The entire group. It's not your choice or decision, but an order and it's up to you, to make it happen, and you can tell the Director the problems, but you can't override his desire."

Derek shook his head. "I wouldn't, not my power. It's one that's obvious. Once it's out, we can't hide again. Keeping them secrets is paramount, because the moment they are out, we'll be haunted like animals. It's one thing to use them in a confined setting with only soldiers, but around civilians, then no, I'll take the bullet, but I won't use my power."

He smiled. "I understand that you want me for your second, but I outrank you. If this were a mission to retrieve something, limited to two agents, and we were counting on my powers or skills, why would we assign it to you?."

Nick tapped the arm of his chair, looking off into space. "That makes it different, and I'd make it work because I had to do it. Sam's assignment said 'no people assigned' though, which means it's an op for myself and since we can't go alone, I need a partner."

Nick nodded. "Okay. So scratch you, then. I want a back-up person with a power that can be used without notice or would be disbelieved in case we gotta book it. That gives me both Callens, Alexis, Dom, Sam, Troy, maybe Brian and maybe Sheldon," he said.

"You wouldn't assign me to lead it. That would be dumb. As the second partner maybe, but not the other way around." Nick got the light bulb look. "Wait, then it wouldn't be Callen or Sam either, for sure."

"I guess it's a problem of instructions here. He means that you need to plan a trip there, and you decide who should go, either people you like or by asking people if they want to go with you. if it makes it easier for you, then you can invite everyone, but I think Sam wanted to see how you want about to invite people."

He frowned. "No, that means you don't plan for powers at all. This isn't about a mission. This is about going to buy comic books. The point is to see if you can plan an outing, so that the next time you want to go somewhere for real, you will know how to do it, or you'll be stuck inside all the time."

Derek nodded. "Correct, no Callen, no Sam and no Emily. Then again, you're approaching this like it's some kind of extraction. It's not. The objective of the exercise is to see if you can plan correctly, not getting something there."

"But I'm not into comic books." Nick was getting seriously confused now. "Why would I want to plan a trip to someplace I don't want to go? Why would I invite people somewhere I don't want to go?"

"It doesn't matter. It's the level of difficulty that matters. The more experienced, the more complicated the mission. He just wants to know that you can do it," Derek said.

"Okay, look at it this way. The objective is to plan a trip to the comic book store for as many people who want to come as possible using the parameters that Sam listed before," he explained.

"Ooohh. Okay. I can do that," Nick said, wondering why Sam hadn't been the one to say that to begin with and not the weird 'no people assigned' thing. "You want to come to the comic book store on November 18th?" He grinned.

Derek chuckled. "Get it set up and I'll be there, but next time, if you don't understand the directions, you should talk to Sam, okay? He might explain in a way you do. And now I believe you have a job to do."
