Sam was like Gibbs sometimes; everything was black and white. Follow orders or be court marshaled. Yet, he seemed to insist that Gibbs would learn to like being director because it was his duty to do so. "You've never worked an assignment you hated because it was your duty? You learned to like the assignment first and then did it because it was your duty?"
