Re: Travis/Thomas
The truth was, TJ really couldn't imagine. When he had a security detail, he knew those men and women would take a bullet for him. But, that was their job. It wasn't a gesture of anything but dedication to job and country. He certainly wasn't under any illusions that it would be because they actually cared about him. Even the man who said he'd only learned what love at first sight was when he met TJ couldn't face public ridicule and divorce, let alone criminal charges for any reason.
No, TJ really couldn't imagine the sort of friendship Travis talked about.
But, he could imagine not having choices or options. It was funny, the common people looked to people with his family's standing, people like TJ and Doug, especially, who were born into that world, and they assumed with money and privilege came choices and options and free-will they didn't have. And not one of them cared about the reality. They wouldn't believe it if one tried to explain it, either.
"No, I can't say that I can picture it. But, then, I can't picture choosing track and field at any of the boarding schools I attended, either. No one who was anyone played anything but football, lacrosse, or was on the crewing or equestrian teams. Track and field was for scholarship students and non-residents. There are expectations that come with everything."
