Brian chuckled, because he didn't think he'd ever seen John stop focusing on their security and that included the cover story they had going at any given time. Someone else might find it upsetting, but Brian was pleased that John could relax enough to make the mistake.
"Maybe I should do it more. You know, just because I want to help with your training," he teased while his hand moved over John's thigh. "I'd say that it was a little clue. And that's just sad; you know that, right? Next year, we're having a real party for him, including gifts, lots of them. The man deserves to have some kind of happy life."
He watched as John opened the pouch. Brian could admit that he enjoyed watching John's reaction. He was so naive, so unaware that his reaction was always for the thing itself and not its value. It didn't matter if it was a bracelet that cost close to $2000, a suit that cost well in the upper hundreds or a steel medal that cost a donation to a church. "I'm glad you like it," he said, taking the bracelet and putting it on.
"Just be careful where you wear it. It's fine here, but-" Brian licked his lips. He was blunt about a great many things, but he never told his friends how much he spent on them. They would know, but he wouldn't tell them, except that John would never get it unless he said something and wearing it in the wrong place could cause trouble. "It's... expensive. Very expensive. If you're trying to pass for your average teenager or even twenty-something, you might want to leave it behind."
