"We've moved twice since I got here, and I think that's all since the beginning. There was the attack at the base in late Novemer, and we had to move from the ranch back in June suddenly for some reason untold. Though it seemed we were preparing to move before we were rushed out, didn't it?" Eliot looked to April for confirmation. "Otherwise, I don't know what Vance's plans are, and won't know, so I don't think about it."
Eliot grunted when Nate pressed on the failure. He glowered in the direction of the ceiling, seeing through the layers of flooring to the metal bedframe of Kinney and Baum's room. "I was supposed to teach the three kids going to college how to survive anything there. I failed to leave time for the driving part, failed to plan right, failed to ask for help, and 'suck' as a teacher because my failures would get them killed." He didn't add that asking for help later went nowhere. He was tired of thinking about it. "When we got here, I was put in the office as a result."
Eliot rubbed April's rings. "It's not that I can't use a firearm, you know that," Eliot said, returning his focus to Nate. "I'm still an expert shot. But there's a delay in identifying who I'm shooting at, and accidentally shooting someone here is severely frowned upon. They won't allow it, so that's that. I don't need to be in the field. There are people that stay here that need someone watching over them, especially April and the babies." He looked at April. "Not to discredit you, but except for your powers, you're as vulnerable as Cooper."
