G had a good working relationship with most of his team in L.A. Everyone did their jobs and he didn't need to babysit them. They could be relaxed about things like forms of address and taking the initiative unasked for on an assignment because they all knew the others were at the top of their game and on the same page. And, when he did need get firm on rare occasion, no one questioned that he was doing what was best for the case or the team...except Hetty...or Sam. But, they did it respectfully and usually in private.
What had happened with Abby was beyond unacceptable.
Luckily, by the time he had received the Director's text, he'd worked most of that lingering fury out sparring with Sam and in the morning he was able to approach Vance's office more calmly than he'd felt the night before while riding high on anger. G was stubborn, refused to give up when he got his teeth in something. But, he did know when to let something go and try a new tactic, it was what made him so good undercover.
This was the time.
"Morning, Director," he said pleasantly, refusing to let the situation keep him from the few niceties he bothered with, like greeting his boss. "There's a situation developing I thought you should be aware of...two, actually, although I believe one to be symptomatic of the other. And, then, I had a couple ideas for fixing things as well, if you're amenable.
"We've been running my training program for a month now. After evaluating things, I don't think it's working. The comprehensive training was meant to give everyone a thorough grounding in the work and to bring them together to share knowledge. But, that's not what's happening. Instead, they're fighting us at every turn, mostly about self-defense and firearms, but also the book work. Not all. There are some who have been very cooperative and the other agents seem to understand our position. Many of the others, however, refuse to understand. I don't believe they're incapable of it. I believe they simply refuse to believe the situation we are all in is what it is.
"And now that we have investigations to run as well, it's not working. Too much time and energy is going into fighting with people who refuse to do what they believe they shouldn't have to because they're not agents. Not enough is getting put into solving these cases.
"That's the first situation, one I believe can be helped greatly by rethinking the current structure of responsibilities and training, if you approve. I'd also like to take them on another group outing, this weekend. Take two days and bring them together as a team under the proper...incentives." G was thankful Vance was as good as he was. He was counting on the man to understand he needed space to brief these people on the truths that couldn't be spoken openly on base.
"The second situation, which I think is a reflection on the first, is Abby," he said bluntly. "She quit yesterday."
