RP: Derek/Emily/Savannah/Marty
Who: Derek/Emily/Savannah/Marty
Where: brunch in Prescott
When: before Mass, March 18, 2012
Summary: Marty and Savannah have something to ask Derek and Emily

They decided to have brunch before going to Mass, which worked great for Savannah, because before Mass ended, they got to the house, got dinner served, she'd be starving. Instead, she could have a lighter brunch and then an early dinner. She was still very conscious of her caloric intake, and one day with a few more calories was not going to make a difference.

The place they picked was nothing fancy, but there was very little that was fancy in Prescott. However, it had a friendly athmospher, not a lot of glass walls and a corner that gave them a perfect view of the place. G would have been proud of their choice.

"Thank you for coming with us," she said when their orders arrived. "I'm sure that you had better ways to spend your Sunday, but we appreciate it, mostly because daddy would have been paranoid all day otherwise." Not that she didn't plan to call G and let him know that everything was okay anyway. "Also, we wanted to ask you something, and I would have made dinner, but they tell me that I'm not supposed to be standing for long."

"Our pleasure. We wouldn't want your father to be paranoid all day," Emily said with a chuckle. Really, with Callen and Hanna gone, it made the most sense for their covers for his assistant to accompany his daughter to church, anyway. And, Emily never thought she'd be back to thinking in this sort of double-meaning so much after joining the BAU.

She hadn't been to Mass in...a very long time. She'd been to funerals. She'd stood on the steps of a church a few times since Matt's death and again after Ian. But, she hadn't had the courage to go to Mass. In a way, it helped that this was for a cover story and not Emily herself. Although, really, it was for Savannah and the idea the young couple had a question for them took precedence.

"And if they're telling you that it's because you told them, am I right?" While she could see some of these men doing the research, everyone knew Savannah had been mainlining pregnancy information from the start.

"Mostly because he'd call you since we can't answer at church," she said with a laugh that turned into a giggle. "I meant more the internet 'they', but yes, I told them, as in person 'they'. There are even schedules for dinners so I don't have to cook."

Derek snorted. "Of course, there are schedules and back-up plans and a third schedule, just in case, and I bet people will still complain because nothing will be as good as what you make?"

Savannah grinned. "They won't complain today since there is a make up schedule and my husband is cooking, and there's no rule that I can't help. I just can't stand, so he does the manual labor and I do the real cooking," she said, leaning in to kiss Marty with a huge smile on her face.

"But, the invitation wasn't about cooking schedules." She put her hand over Marty's and looked at him for a moment, before turning to the other two. "We wanted you to be the twins' godparents at the Baptism and I know it's something big, we both do, so we understand if you don't feel up to it."

"What she means is I do the cooking and she sits there giving directions." Deeks winked at his wife.

But, Emily's attention was taken away from the cuteness of the couple as soon as Savannah asked the question. Of all the things Emily could have imagined, this was not something she'd seen coming. Partly because, while she wasn't avoiding anyone, she also had been staying to the edges of things whenever the babies or pregnancies were involved. It was difficult to watch, even though she kept telling herself there was nothing to be done. It was what it was and she didn't begrudge these women their families.

Of course, she'd also spent time wondering if this was divine punishment for youthful transgressions and adult actions.

Glancing at Derek, it didn't seem as if he'd been expecting it either. At least, not if that wide-eyed look was anything to go by. Emily smiled gently at Savannah. "I'm honored by the request. But, I hope you won't be offended when I say it seems like a strange choice? I would have thought you'd ask someone in the family?"

Savannah could understand the hesitation and the question, but there really wasn't any doubt in her mind. "I know it sounds strange from us, but we want them raised Catholic, and I love my daddy, but he's not the best person to teach them about religion. I want them to have a religious entity, knowing the Church's history. It's something I've been reading about, but we want to people that know and understand Catholicism to be their godparents."

Derek was still looking at the couple sitting in front of them, unsure of what to say, and then he looked at Emily for a moment. "I... You should know that my personal history with the Church is not idyllic. I don't have your faith. I know about the sacraments and the Mass and the ins and out. We know about exorcisms," he said, throwing another look at Emily, "but my faith isn't as strong as yours."

Savannah grinned. "I don't think anyone's at the ranch is as much of a believer, but this isn't even my religion. It's yours, and I'm not asking you, either of you to teach them what I would. I'm asking what the Church asks of the godparents. If something happens to us, I'd like for you to teach them about Catholicism the best way you know how, and yes, I'm aware that what shouldn't be isn't always what it is, especially with our life."

"We're not asking you to give them faith," Deeks interjected. "Just to give them the knowledge so when they're old enough they can make their own decisions on what to believe. Their father doesn't have the strongest faith, either. So, there's no pressure to live up to anyone's faith. These girls are going to have a pretty complete exposure to people of all faiths and different strengths of belief. But, this is the one we're going to teach them and would like someone to teach them in our place if something were to happen."

Emily exchanged looks with Derek, unsurprised at the reference to Matt and the exorcisms. That case had brought up questions of faith for all of them, she thought. "I don't...I don't know," she told them honestly. Taking on the responsibility for spiritually guiding these children if something happened to their parents was a big deal. Especially when the thought of children was such an uncomfortable one still for Emily. If she said yes, was she taking the twins' well-being into account or her own frustrated maternal instincts? "May I take some time to think about it?"

Derek knew that there were plenty of reasons why what he was thinking was stupid. Prescott had a black population of three before they arrived, and interracial anything was utopia. There were other reasons as well with their covers, and he was sure that Callen would tell him all of them, but Callen wasn't there, and Derek reached over and ran his hand down Emily's arm, before squeezing her hand, before looking at the other two. "You might not be asking that, but that's what the Church would ask of us, and we've had our own problems with the Church that before we give you an answer we need to be sure that it is the right things to do for the twins."

Savannah's eyes went wide for a moment, before smiling brightly at them. Little things. She always said that the details were the things that gave people away, and she knew Derek was different around Emily, but she'd never seen anything so clear. "Of course take the time you need. We should concentrate on food anyway, before Mass. We can talk about this after you've had the chance to think about this."
