RP: Nick's Birthday Party
Who: Anyone (add tags)
When: 2-26-12 7pm
Where: Nick's house
Summary: Nick turns seventeen.

Nick was thrilled to finally turn seventeen and to have an actual party-type event to go with it. Usually, his parents took him out to dinner and gave him money, which he'd been totally fine with since it was tradition. But since he was in Omega, and people had parties for their birthday, he was all for it, too.

He still wanted the dinner, though, and Eliot went all out with real sit-down food set up buffet style. Barbeque chicken, barbeque ribs, and salad stuff for the boring people. There were side dishes, too. And drinks and April's cake.

Nick had managed to keep the random lights under control, mostly. Some still managed to escape in his excitement, but nothing big or 'scary' or whatever. When the time arrived, Nick stationed himself at the door with the cooler of beers to hand out as the proper party hello.

Since Ash had talked him into going, Eric was actually looking forward to a party. First of all, there would be food, and good food. And cake. And beer. Really that alone was a reason for going. Second, Ash was right, they should celebrate what could be celebrated (even if he hoped she was wrong about the Leeroy Jenkins part).

After wishing Nick a happy birthday, he headed for the food, watching Ash disappear off somewhere. He'd just gotten a few things on a plate when he spotted Nell coming up to him.

Swallowing, he wished this wouldn't feel awkward, but they've only spoken at and about work since valentines day. He hoped they'd get past that though, because no matter what, he wanted her to still be his friend, even if he'd completely ruined them ever anything else.

"Hi, having fun or did you just get here?" he asked as she got closer, determined to act normal and stay clear of acting like an idiot this time.

Nell didn't see any reason not to go to Nick's party. Most people went to all the parties for everyone. It was how they stayed together as a group when they were too busy to socialize outside their immediate colleagues and roommates during the work week. And she herself was such a workaholic her roommate and their friends had to bring her lunch or she'd suddenly realize it was dinner time and she'd worked through lunch!

Besides, she worked with Nick on his lessons and it was just the nice, socially polite thing to do. If her mother had only gone to the D.A.R. events hosted by ladies she was close to, she'd never have gone to any!

Of course, in all that happy mingling, there was one person Nell was interested in seeing, mostly to see if there was any way to salvage the friendship that had been there before other things got in the way. She and Eric were polite enough when they had to talk for work or when they saw each other in the office or at training. But, that old sense of camaraderie wasn't there anymore. Even if she wasn't in love with him, she missed that.

"Hey," she said by way of greeting. "Been here for a little bit. Mostly just long enough to say hello to everyone and wish the birthday boy a happy birthday, give him his gift. Was planning to sample some of Eliot's barbeque next. You've been here long enough to beat me to that, I see," she added with a small grin. So, she couldn't help it. She liked Eric, talking to him, teasing him. It just sucked they weren't on the same page with other things.

Eric did like to see her smile, and gave her a small slightly sheepish grin of his own in return. "I might have made a beeline for it after wishing Nick a happy birthday," he said. "I have very fond memories of Eliot's cooking after all. April's too for that matter. April wouldn't even let anyone else near the kitchen, for which I was very grateful."

He looked at her. "So how have you been?" He didn't need to remind her that they hadn't talked much lately, they both knew it and why. He hoped things wouldn't need to stay that way though.

"Might have," she repeated, grin widening a bit. "Can't really blame you. Eliot's cooking is really good. And it's very good they kept you fed." Saying that made Nell realize she hadn't really been doing the same things to take care of him since coming to the ranch that she had at the base. Here it was the others bringing her food instead of her taking Eric food. But, there was so much to keep track of and do.

"Good. I've been good. I mean, nothing much has really changed. It's the same old job on the same old ranch with the same old training, you know? Which, I guess falls into the no news is good news cliche because if I suddenly started finding things on the job it would mean we've been found and there's trouble coming, right? So, same old, same old is good." She laughed lightly. "How are things with you? You and Ash getting on well enough since moving in? Any Eurekas from the research?"

Eric shrugged a bit, trying to look innocent but failing when he grinned again. It was good talking to Nell, even if it was a bit more awkward than usual. "It is really good, and yeah it was. I mean the idea was to take turns, but April claimed to get tired of take out so yeah the two of them cooked and we got fed."

When she started rambling, he had to stop himself from smiling, because she probably didn't meant to ramble, but it was cute. "Yeah," He couldn't really say good because he hadn't been. Not in the true sense of the word. He missed talking to her, he missed her - the idea that maybe they'd be more than just friends one day and just generally wanted to turn back time a bit, but he got on. "I'm fine," he settled on. "Ash is great, we get on well. Unfortunately we're both lousy cooks but the microwave is getting a lot of attention."

"No Eurekas yet, a couple of 'oh wow' but yeah, it's moving in the right direction, but it'll take time."

"Well, 'oh wow' is better than 'oh crap'," Nell pointed out, almost wishing she could be in on that process. But, while her IQ may be up to the task, her subject matter focus wasn't and Vance needed her skills.

Okay, yes, this really sucked. They were talking but saying so little and it was clear they were stepping carefully around each other. But, hopefully it would get better and maybe they're really get to know each other this time instead of grabbing at the familiarity. Nothing else may ever happen between them, but Nell wanted the friendship, a real one.

"Do you have any idea how bad for you a diet of microwave food is," she admonished with a grin. "We're going to have to tell Callen to move you both in with people who can cook next time we have to move." Laughing, she shook her head fondly. "I'm glad it's working out, though."

She hesitated, then decided to go ahead anyway. If it was awkward, it was awkward. They'd get past it. "You know, you two could come over and join us some night if you wanted, get a real, non-microwaved meal with some actual nutritional value to go with the caloric intake. Alexis and Sean join us most nights, or we go over there, and more people always makes good food better."

"True, though 'oh crap' can be useful in it's own way. At least you've found one more way to not do it," he said with a smile. "I know you're busy, and you work a lot, but you should totally come in and join us sometimes. You'd love it."

He chuckled. "I do know, actually. I would have never had this much crap back home. Crap yes, but not this much, not when there are healthy options everywhere without you needing to cook. The skill to pick healthy take out doesn't help me much around here, though," he said with a smirk.

And that was an awkward thought. He was far too fresh for him to just get over his initial dislike of Troy, even if he could see that he'd overreacted. When it came down to it though, Troy didn't matter, but Nell did. He would never be able to truly be her friend if he couldn't spend time with her, and her time included Troy as well as Sean and Alexis. "Sure, I'd love to," he said. "I'm sure Ash would like it too, she's desperate enough to talk about learning how to cook," he said with a grin. "Thanks."

"That's true." Nell smiled at the invitation. "Maybe. I'll think about it. Walls in the office aren't very thick, though. I heard the reception April got. I wouldn't want to annoy the others while you're all working." And, really, there were reasons she'd turned down all those think tanks. She was more suited to the work she was doing with NCIS and Director Vance.

"You need to start shopping the prepared foods section at Fresh and Easy during the Phoenix trips," she told him with a soft chuckle.

Beaming at him, she nodded. "It's a deal, then. Open invitation any night you'd like to join us. We usually eat a late dinner then so we can all just chill for the night and get a break, you know? It's totally casual both the meal and the company. So, just come on by, or catch us after the evening meeting, in case we're going to Alexis and Sean's that night. You might even pick up a few things to get you off frozen dinners," she added with a wink.

Eric looked sheepish at the mention of April. "Maybe not my proudest moment," he said. "But I'm sure you wouldn't get that reception," he said. "I'd make sure of it. If you wanted to come, that is."

He chuckled. "Perhaps, I'll look into it. Thanks. I'll talk to Ash and see if she wants to come, and if not I'll just stop by some night." He chuckled. "Maybe, who knows? It wouldn't hurt to know more, this isn't exactly LA, after all."

Derek and Nick

Derek and Emily had been greeted by a smiling Nick and beer. It had taken a moment to remember his comment about a beer being like an hello. Obviously, he'd have to be more careful with his statements, but at least this wasn't likely to get him in trouble. In fact, it might just make him slightly more accepted.

He let it go, but when most of the guests had arrived, he made a point to find Nick. "Hello, birthday boy. How does it feel to be seventeen?" he asked with a grin.

"It's a pretty good party, good food. Are you enjoying it?" he asked, although it wasn't hard to tell.

Nick beamed at Derek's question. Literally, damn it, and he quashed the little rainbow that sprang up. "One of these days, that'll stop," he grumbled, embarassed. He shook it off and smiled again. "Being seventeen is cool. It'll be even cooler once I can finally really drive."

Nick looked around. People there seemed to be enjoying all the food, of which the food was awesome as usual. "I like this better than just going out to dinner. I was gonna do a birthday party game, but we didn't have enough bullets in the house to make it challenging."

Derek laughed. "That's fine, don't worry about it." In fact, he'd like to keep Nick's innocence as long as possible. It balanced his disorder. "I'll make you a deal. You promise to talk to me when you're angry, like you have been doing, and after each session, we drive some more Sounds good?"

He nodded. "This is pretty good." He stopped and looked at Nick. "What kind of game requires bullets?"

Nick lit up. Again. Damn it. "Cool! You got it." He smothered the rainbow with a dirty look at it.

"I looked up birthday party games online. There's this one where you guess the number of things in a jar and win a prize. I thought that would be neat and easy. And Eliot said no to Pin the Tail on the Donkey."

Derek snorted. "One day, it'll stop. It's fine for now."

At least, they weren't planning on killing anyone and that was good. "Do you know why Eliot said no?" he asked, conflicted between telling Nick that he didn't have to listen to Eliot and the potential damage he could do in the house. "Also why bullets? You could have picked something else. Beans, candies, condoms," he teased with a wink. Not that condoms seemed to have much effect here.

"Eliot said it was probably too small in the house to do that game, unless I wanted to have people sticking each other in possibly places like," Nick paused and blushed and blurted very quickly, "breastsandpenises."

Then Derek mentioned condoms and Nick blushed even more. "I was loading my clip when I was looking online, that's why. I didn't think about the other stuff."

"That's true." As long as they were explaining the reason and it was an arbitrary decision, Derek had no problem, even if the reason given wasn't the real one. "Also, when you plan games, you should consider the people you invite. There are a lot of adults, and they don't really like to play those games."

He nodded. "Okay, but from now on, try to think about alternatives. Bullets are rarely the way to go at a party, okay?"

Nick's eyes grew a bit wider. "I don't think I'm ready for games adults play. That truth or dare was wild enough." There were bras flying, and Alexis had kissed him!

Whoosh, red glowing face.

"Um... everyone's packing but Eliot. There's bullets already here." He shoved his hands in his pockets and tried not to think about kisses.

Derek started to laugh. "I didn't meant that. Surprisingly enough, after a certain age, you don't think of sex every breathing moment of the day. In fact, we don't really enjoy having sex in public, or at least most people don't. Some do. I meant that adults don't want to play games at all. They are happier talking, listening to music, eating. No games required."

He ruffled Nick's hair. "One day, you'll stop thinking about sex too. Hard to believe, but it will happen." He nodded. "I know, but those guns are for protection, not fun. You know, I think we should have a gun free day. One whole day with activities for you to do that do not include a gun, even in video games."

Nick released a sigh of relief. "I can talk and eat and listen to music." It was a lot less nerve-wracking, for sure. His color faded.

He looked up at Derek after the hair ruffle. "Like what?" He's had a gun on him for four years. Not having it would be weird.

"Good, and maybe you can avoid Truth or Dare, since some of these young people seem to push their dares into levels you aren't comfortable with," he said.

"Well, we could try sports. I used to play football, but there's basketball. Maybe help Eliot with the cattle. Maybe that video game I got you. You can build a world. It takes some patience and skill, and you have to think about every aspect of your world, roads, food, growth. You still have classes. So it's not like you have that much time anyway." He was curious to see how Nick would handle being without the gun for that long.

"I played sports in P.E.," Nick volunteered. "Not very well, because of my cover. Couldn't let on that I was anything but average." Nick pretended he didn't hear about the cattle, because Eliot would probably make him shovel cow poop or something equally gross. "I'm gonna try the game tonight after everyone goes and we clean up. I have floor duty." He rolled his eyes.

"Is there a sport you liked to play? Even if you couldn't play it well in school?" He really wanted to know who was this idiot who thought that Nick couldn't play sports to keep a cover.

Derek smiled. "Good, and then you can tell me what you think about it. It's a little more tiring than pointing and shooting, but I find them more interesting."

John had wished Nick a happy birthday when he and Brian first arrived. But, he didn't create a bottleneck at the entrance. So, he waited until it looked like most people were there before he left Brian for a bit and made his way over to the boy of the hour.

"Hey, the party looks like it's a success. If you've got a minute, I've got something for you." Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a flash drive on a key ring. "It's not much, but happy birthday. You mentioned that you liked working with Derek on learning to read people's emotions in their faces. I went to this shrink once and he used to have cards with faces drawn on them and the emotion written beneath. He used them to help little kids who didn't know how to talk about things that bothered them. Anyway, I took the concept and wrote a simple memory-like game program I thought might help you. The pictures are graphic smilies, so not great, and you make the match with the name of the emotion depicted. It's not Diablo or Conker's or anything like that. But, it might help with the work you're doing with Derek."

Leaving Eric, Nell got the food she'd gone over for and then looked around for a seat. Barbeque was delicious to eat, but not so much fun to wear. And salad was difficult to eat standing up no matter how careful you were. Spotting a clear space she made her way over to sit down. It wasn't until she got closer that she realized Ash was sitting near the empty space.

"Hi," she said brightly, pointing toward the chair. "Is it okay if I join you or were you saving the spot for someone?"

"I wouldn't bet on anyone with an appetite or any of the boys leaving enough to fit in that care package," Nell answered with a small laugh as she sat down. There needed to be a new rule: All parties must include plates with some bit of metal. It would make balancing so much easier.

Silence reigned for a moment as she bit into her chicken with a happy sigh. Good food was one of those normal comforts that was appreciated more and more in the given circumstances. "Between Eliot and Savannah, even those of us who can cook well are put to shame, I think. Really, if we had the time I'd sit them each down for a week and have them show me all the recipes and techniques they could fit in."

The change of subject was so abrupt Nell didn't say anything for a moment. "Huh." She said after the pause, some of the warmth leaching out of her tone, though it was still flawlessly polite in the most Hetty-esque way possible. "I wasn't, actually."

Deciding to leave it at that unless Ash intended to pry further, it was Nell's turn to chance the subject and go back to the discussion on food. "However, I was just talking to Eric and he mentioned the diet of microwaveables you guys have going. I told him you're both more than welcome to join us for dinner some night. We usually switch off between our house and going to Alexis and Sean's. Now that Alexis and Tim are seeing each other, he joins us on occasion and Tyra, as well. But, that couldn't be explained. It had to be experienced.
