Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:*complete, 2012 02, character: sean hanna, dead: jenna hanna

RP: Jenna and Sean
Who: Jenna and Sean
Where: The farm
When: February 22
Summary: Jenna goes to ask her brother a question

When she got the email yesterday, Jenna's eyebrows had been somewhere in her hairline. She'd almost replied to Savannah asking what the hell she was doing, because there was no way that her brother was seriously involved with someone and let Savannah find out before telling her. Even if Savannah had found out by accident, Sean would have made sure to tell her before she could find out from her.

Only apparently she didn't know her brother at all.

When Sean answered the email, it wasn't to deny anything, it wasn't to tell Savannah she was out of line, it was to ask if they should bring anything.

Maybe it was petty to feel jealous that Savannah had been told first, and stupid to let it matter, but Jenna was pissed off. More than pissed off. She was furious. She and Sean had always been close, they'd told each other things, and she wouldn't have imagined for a second that Sean would be so inconsiderate as to let her find out that he had someone that important in his life from Savannah of all people. After sending the sparks flying and making the light bulbs explode because he was jealous of her relationship with their dad he wouldn't consider making sure she heard something like this from him and not her - or anyone that wasn't him or dad?

At first she was too angry to even want to speak to him, but then she wasn't someone who didn't tell people exactly what she thought when she thought it, so her efforts were in vain and finally she just went to find him.

"Can you talk? Privately?" she asked, because it was bad enough that Mike would probably hear this, she didn't need anyone else to do so too.

What Sean had told Troy the night before, he'd gotten his teenage rebellions out of his system while he was still a teenager, was totally true. Part of that was deciding he didn't need them to get his dad's attention, which at the time he'd given up on ever getting. But, the other part was him, Juilliard, the need to focus on what he really wanted out of life.

And yet, his wicked side was coming out more and more now.

As evidenced by the trick he was playing on his friend, a trick that was going right along on schedule.

When that night's meeting broke up, Sean was looking forward to another relaxing evening at home with his friends, perhaps sans weird conversation about his dad and the past. But, when his sister approached, those plans changed. "Yeah, sure." He had a feeling he would needed that dinner with his friends after this. "Just let me...hang on."

Catching Alexis, he told her to go on ahead with Nell and Troy and he'd meet them at their place later. Then he returned to Jen. "Come on, we can talk at my place.

"You want anything?" he asked once they got there, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge for himself. "What's up?" Although he thought he knew. But, he'd made his choice.

"What's up?" Jenna asked, staring at him incredulously. "Oh I don't know, how about the fact that you're apparently in a serious relationship?" she asked. "Or were you never going to bother to tell me that little piece of information face to face?" She stared at him, hands on her hips.

"You know, when dad asked me what was going on, on Sunday, I told him probably nothing serious since you hadn't told me anything. I couldn't imagine that you wouldn't talk to us before letting anyone else find something that important. Then I got Savannah's letter and though that obviously she'd got it wrong, because again, you of all people wouldn't let me find out through someone else. Only I apparently don't know you as well as I used to, because then you answered the email confirming the relationship."

Right, nothing to drink.

Sean wasn't really surprised, either at the skipping over niceties or at the subject matter and subsequent ire directed at him by his sister. He'd expected it when he made the decision to run with this little payback scheme and leave her out of it. Although, somehow, he wasn't sure G had intended this sort of test when training them in how to keep a cover.

Setting the bottle down, he leaned his hip on the counter and crossed his arms. For a moment, Sean just stared at his sister. "Really, Jen? Do you honestly think I'd tell Savannah before I told you? Did you think about asking what happened before getting pissed off? Or did you jump to the conclusion I was trying to hurt you on purpose?"

"Did I say tell? I said find out, because no, as pissed off as I am, I don't think you'd tell her before me nor did I think you're trying to hurt me on purpose. That doesn't change the fact that after she found out, you didn't find me and make sure to tell me before she did. Nor did you ask her not to say anything. So yes, I'm pissed off and don't even try to pretend you wouldn't be if the situation was reversed."

"But fine, by all means, what happened?"

"If the situation was reversed?" Sean asked, getting angry himself, despite the lie that was the relationship. "You mean like you told me about Dom before you skipped offbase with him for a date? Oh wait, you didn't. You didn't tell anyone until after we all noticed you'd disappeared and came back to find Dad waiting for you on the porch. That's how we all found out. There was no brother sister secret then, either."

Sighing, he shook his head. He didn't need to get angry. It wasn't a real relationship and he just had to calm her down enough dinner wouldn't end up hurting people. "Look, Jen, I didn't tell anyone. But, no one found out before you did, either. Not really. Sure, Troy announced it to Vance and the others at the club. But, it was hardly a private affair when I kissed him in public and the club isn't so big anyone could miss it. Dad was as far from things as you could possibly get and he noticed. So, yeah, I answered the email like it was a fait accompli because I didn't think there was anyone who really needed Savannah's dinner invitation to confirm what had happened. Everyone saw it."

"A date, as in one, as in the first one," Jenna reminded him. "And yet you asked me why I hadn't told you and made me promise I'd tell you if I went on dates in the future."

She shook her head. "No, that's not the same as telling me. A kiss isn't the same as to say you're serious about each other, it can mean a world of things. You're joking around, you're casual, you're dating but not serious yet - there were a million interpretations and the one I never considered was that it was serious because if it was I was sure you'd take the first best chance of telling me after that happened. Only you didn't, instead you let Savannah announce how serious it was and now you're acting as if you can't even see why that would upset me."

Sean sighed and spread his hands. "What do you think we've been doing? We don't get to date the way you did. We train and then we spend time together and with our roommates. Things happened. There wasn't a moment you could point to and say 'that's when we started dating' because it just sort of happened while we weren't looking and were just hanging out eating dinner and watching games with the girls."

Staring at her, he couldn't help the sarcasm. "What exactly is the difference between casual and dating but not serious? What is serious, for that matter. We're not getting married or even thinking about settling down or calling this forever. We enjoy each other's company; we talk; we've been having sex for a while. How do you even know it's serious and this isn't us humoring Savannah with dinner because she sees hearts and stars and romance everywhere? And you're right, I don't understand why you're upset. Are you upset because I didn't tell you? Or are you upset because other people knew first? Or are you upset because Savannah made the usual Savannah conclusions from one public incident and it's Savannah?"

Jenna sighed. "Look, Sean, did I say I wanted to know when you started dating? Or that I needed to know the moment things got serious? That's not it, I get that things are different here, and I get that things here are more fluid than back home, and yet you managed to say that you've been together for a month, so for at least a month you'd known it was something."

"I'm upset because when you realized the cat was out of the bag, you made no effort to tell me in person. Instead you let me find out that it was more than just joking around through an email from someone else, from Savannah, and for someone who gets so jealous sparks come flying out of his fingers when the wrong person gets dad's attention I thought you'd be a little more understanding than this."

"Actually said was that we'd been having sex for a month." Which, if true, would have been pretty serious for him. But, Sean was having difficulty talking of it like it was serious when he knew it was a joke, it all was a joke. "But, it was then equating to dating in a dig at the director's age and was translated from there into being 'involved'. But, again, I didn't think I had to tell anyone in person when both the announcement and the kissing were so public. You know me, Jen. I don't do casual well or much at all since starting Juilliard and if I'm making it known I'm with someone, then it's not a joke. There shouldn't have been anything for you to find out after that night at the club.

"I guess I'm having a hard time being as understanding because once again it's all about Savannah. It's not just an email from someone else. It's an email from Savannah. I notice you haven't said a word about the fact Alexis and Nell, as our roommates, must have known what was going on before anyone else. All you've said is you're upset Savannah found out at the same time everyone else did, including you, and sent an email to dinner that clued you in to what you missed in the first place. You want to talk about making sparks fly? The fact even my relationships come down to a contest with Savannah will do it."

Sean didn't know why he was so worked up over this when the relationship wasn't even real. He didn't want to fight and he shouldn't feel hurt himself that Savannah's involvement was more important than the relationship itself. "Look, I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry you found out the way you did and that Savannah's email was such a surprise. I'm sorry for wanting to have something for myself for awhile when everyone else in this family has someone else who comes first and who they come first to."

Oh.

Fuck.

Maybe Dad was right.

"You don't do sex for a month without it being serious, Sean," Jenna said. "This is you we're talking about. Not just anyone. That's why I thought it was all a joke. Because you, serious, I can't see you letting it be known like that and if it was, not talking to me about it."

She sighed when he went on, her voice softening as she spoke, because she didn't want to make him angry either. "I am happy that you've found someone, and I want you to be happy, you know that, Sean. I love you, and I am thrilled that you've found someone that important to you. It's the fact that you've found something that important and then choose not to tell me about it in person that hurts. If it was just something random, it wouldn't matter half as much."

"I might have sex with him, but I don't control him." Sean snorted. "You'll notice no one said I told anyone, but that it was announced? In fact, if you ask anyone who was within hearing distance, I chastised him then for telling everyone before I could say anything to you or Dad."

Sean didn't want his dad to be right. He didn't want to admit to feeling on the outside, odd man out, even with his family, or that he needed someone. He didn't. He had his music and his family and he was happy that way.

Really.

He was.

Sean sighed. "You could have asked. Dad did." He was tempted to tell her the truth. But, that would just complicate matters further. "I think you're confusing my kind of serious with what you and Dom have, though. It's not a forever after sort of serious."

"How do you know it's not a forever sort of serious? Things happen. The size of me should tell you that." She said, because in that sentence that was the important part.

"I know Dad asked, he asked me if he should. I wanted to, but I didn't get a chance to talk to you all night Sunday so when was I supposed to?"

Because it wasn't real. But he couldn't say that. Instead, Sean just shook his head. "I'm not saying it won't become a forever sort of serious or that it can't. But, it's not a forever sort of serious right now. Whether it becomes that or not, we'll see when it happens. Neither of us is looking for forever when we're just lucky to have a today."

Cocking his head, he raised an eyebrow. "I don't know. Monday? Tuesday? You pulled me aside now. You could have pulled me aside either of those two days. You could have emailed. All I'm saying is it takes two to have a conversation. Maybe I wasn't seeking you out because I didn't think I had to, but you weren't trying to talk to me, either."

"How in the world did this become my fault? I wasn't the one with news to share, you were. The fact that Dad asked should have told you that it wasn't obvious to us what exactly was going on."

"If it becomes a forever kind of serious or not, I want to be a part of your life. Just because I got married and became pregnant I didn't stop being interested in what happens to you."

"Because it's not mine?" Sean supplied helpfully with just a tiny smirk. Then he sighed, not bothering to correct her, again, that he didn't think he had news to share. "Dad needing to ask doesn't mean anything more than that Dad's doesn't get something. That's not really unusual for us. The man looks at me like I'm insane for suggesting he and G go on a date. And, maybe being married and pregnant doesn't mean you stop being interested. But, it does mean it's no longer you and me against the world, Jen. We can still be part of each others' lives. We'd better still be part of each others' lives. But, you have Dom, Blaze on the way. This is for me, mine to share when I am ready...or when Troy opens his mouth, as the case may be."

"Which is why I'm not upset at you for not telling me while it was going on," Jenna answered. "I get that you weren't ready to share, but once he announced it, you should have made sure to talk to me and Dad so that we knew what was going on, and I know you know that so what I don't get is why you're insisting on arguing as if I'm wrong."

Sean wanted to bang his head on the wall with the way they were going round and round, saying the same things, and no matter how many times he explained it, she came right back to the same line. "Jen, I stopped arguing five minutes ago. I apologized. I explained why I didn't talk to you. What more do you want me to say?

"I'll say it all again if you want. I'm sorry you were hurt. It wasn't my intention. I didn't realize you wouldn't understand. I can't take any of it back, but I'm sorry. What more is there that you want from me?"

She was tempted to say that his previous attempt at an apology hadn't been an actual apology, not when said at the same time as pointing out all the reason why getting angry was wrong. She bit her tongue, however, because this was an apology.

"I want you to remember how important you are to me. You're my brother, I want to know what goes on in your life. I want to be happy for you."

"I am happy for you." She smiled teasingly. "So is it too soon to give him the 'hurt my baby brother and I'll make your life a living hell' speach? Because if it is I can totally wait...for a while."

"It's never too early for that speech," Sean said with a laugh. "In fact, I insist on it as proof my big sister is still looking out for her baby brother. I'm pretty sure it's required within the first week of learning of a new relationship. I'll feel cheated if you wait."

Crossing over, he hugged her as best he could around the aforementioned baby belly. "I love you, Jen. that hasn't changed just because I let a boy go to my head...again."

Jenna couldn't help but to laugh at that. "As if you need proof," she said. "But I can do that. Leaves me something to do on Sunday."

"You'd better not let it either," she said. "I love you too, Sean. Just don't forget it the next time a boy goes to your head."
