Bolton didn't move fast enough. Hetty knew he was hit the moment his thoughts scattered. But, it was the triumphant thought of the operative now coming through the window that made her blood run cold. They were shooting tranquilizers, not lead. This wasn't the termination mission they'd all expected. It was a capture mission. The lab needed some new rats.
In an instant her decision was made. She couldn't let these young people fall into the hands of the scientists who'd caused this mess.
The men coming might be shooting to stun, as the saying went, but Hetty was more ruthless than they likely had counted on. As Nell pushed Bolton through the window in Hetty's room, Hetty opened fire on the intruders. The first one of them went down as she moved further into the house, drawing the fire of the rest. She hit another, though not fatally. Her mind was split, listening for the thoughts of the rest of the denizens of the building. When she was sure they were outside, she reached into her pocket, simultaneously firing twice more.
But, those were only cover shots to give her time. Sending a silent apology to those she knew would take her actions badly, she pressed the trigger for the explosives that would take her and the men inside with her out of this fight for good.
