RP: Kensi, Robert
Who: Kensi, Robert
Where: Their apartment
When: November 1st, 2011
Summary: Kensi tries to talk.

Kensi was exhausted. She really hadn't expected to get tired so quickly but since finding out about the baby, she had noticed a lot of things that she'd dismissed previously. Napping was one of them; Kensi often felt like she could lie down and sleep just about anywhere. She had been lucky enough to not get morning sickness but her sense of smell seemed to have improved and certain smells made her feel nauseous, more than they had before she was pregnant.

She'd received the training schedule from Sam and although she was pissed she couldn't do things such as running - she really would have to cut out some of the fast food if she wasn't running about in the cold anymore - she was glad that they had a plan actually designed for them. It wasn't as if they would be able to keep up with the group for much longer, especially since Jenna was further along than both her and Savannah. The yoga and stretching wasn't too bad although she imagined it was going to get harder as their bodies started to change more. But after thirty minutes of shooting followed by an hour of yoga that night, Kensi was about ready to fall asleep. However, she still had to have some dinner although she didn't feel like cooking. She had begun to learn using recipes she had found on the web and she could now cook a decent breakfast. Or pasta with a sauce. Which had to be a start, right?

Kensi had just made herself a salad for dinner when Robert walked through the door. Things had been okay between them but Dom's words were still on her mind. They didn't talk about anything important and if they were going to bring up a child together, they really had to discuss something beyond the niceties. Kensi just didn't know if she was ready to answer the questions Robert might ask her in return.

"Hey, I picked up some beer for you at the store earlier," she said, smiling as she sat down to eat. "How are you?"

Robert loved training. It was the perfect way not to have to talk to anyone about anything. It was probably the one thing that save his sanity in this god forsaken dimension. With a seven am start and a ten pm end, he could avoid talking to most people. The only exception was Mike. At the start, he'd been waiting for G to switch him partner, but the more time passed and the more unlikely that switch seemed, Robert just got more and more polite, putting a nice distance between them. That left him with only Kensi to deal with. Now that she had a different schedule, they could effectively not have to talk most of the day.

When he got home, he looked at her with a frown. "How can you eat this late?" He didn't make a big deal because it really wasn't any of his business. "Thanks," he said, putting down his jacket, before going into the kitchen to grab that beer. He debated going into his room, but he could be civil for a few minutes, before going to sleep. Sitting down, he smiled. "I'm good. Or I'm as good as anyone is after two hours with Sam."

Kensi looked down at her plate. "I'd rather not eat a proper meal before I have to do an hour of yoga," she replied, forking up a mouthful of salad. "Which I now have one and a half hours of on a Tuesday. Did I show you my modified schedule that I was sent? There's so much I'm not allowed to do."

She gave him a skeptical look. "Two hours with Sam? Sounds... Hard. Talking of Sam, did you see that we're going there for dinner on Saturday before the club? I might have to see if Hetty has anything I can borrow to wear," She smiled suddenly. "Hey, are you singing or playing? Sam banned me for life already."

"It's yoga, how hard can it be?" He didn't think that it could be that taxing, not that he'd ever trained. "Training or no training, I'm eating." There was no way that he could go all day without eating.

"No, you didn't show me the list, but I'm assuming that they did their homework. They don't do anything without researching and I saw April around. If it's necessary for the baby, right?"

He snorted. "He likes his training a lot more than G does, but I'll survive. It could be worse. I've seen SEALs train on their downtime. It's tiring just watching them." He looked at her for a moment. "Have you considered buying a dress? It doesn't have to be something expensive." He rolled his eyes. "I'm doing none of those things. I'm dancing if the music allows it. Other than that, I'm just there to support yet another family affair."

"Less hard, more boring," Kensi replied. "I always preferred pilates if I did anything like that. Yoga was definitely more Marty's thing."

Kensi found the email on her laptop as she ate and swiveled the machine so Robert could read it. "I know they've done their homework and it's kind of a relief in some ways knowing I'm not about to inadvertently hurt the baby. It's just strange seeing things that I'd never think twice about doing banned like that."

"I have considered buying a dress, I just thought I'd try Hetty first. I know she doesn't have the wardrobe we had back home but she's knowledgeable about where to get things," She shrugged and stared at him. "You know, you could have fun, Rob. You don't have to just support whatever they're doing."

"Then why aren't you eating before yoga?" he asked with a chuckle. "And I can't say I've met many people who did yoga, men or women, but maybe it's a military thing."

Robert read the email, making not of what she wasn't supposed to do. "Do you get a feeling that Savannah had a hand in that? It doesn't really sound like Sam. Of course, it's missing the pink links." He reached over and cupped the back of her head. "You'll be fine. I'm sure you won't hurt anyone for banning these activities."

He nodded, although he didn't get this fixation they had with asking Hetty for things. "Okay, whatever you want. I'll have to get a suit, something dark that I can wear more than once, get different shirts and ties to make it look different." He smiled. "I'll have fun. I'll be there and dancing, but I'm not singing or playing."

"Because I don't want to and it's kinda popular back home but mostly for the ultra-healthy skinny people who hate the sight of food," she dead-panned. "Marty only really went to pick up girls but we won't mention that part to Savannah. Or yoga at all."

"I have a feeling she had a very big hand in this. We already spoke with Eliot about training - Jenna wanted Sam to sign off on it first. He didn't really go about it the right way. No woman wants to get told she's going to look like a whale," She chuckled. "It's not that surprising though, she was going to open up her own gym or something back home. Fitness and cheerleading, they are her things."

"As long as they don't ban me from shooting all together. If they do, I might shoot them," she said, grinning.

"Do you want some company shopping?" she asked, pushing her plate aside once she'd finished eating. "And do you sing? Or play?" she asked, curious to know. "I can do about three chords on a guitar and that's it. I wonder if your brother knows Sam banned him from singing too. Our unique vocal talents just aren't appreciated in the slightest."

"Eating this late is going to make you sick," he pointed out, "but whatever you want." And yes, he had been reading those links, and now he could wait until she got heartburn and then say 'I told you so' without even saying it. "I'm fine with not mentioning yoga."

Robert snorted. "The man has no tact. It's a surprise that someone hasn't shot him yet." He didn't really pay attention to Savannah and her plans for the future. "I just meant that I can't see Sam explaining so much. He would have said 'this is what you do' and be done." He smiled. "You might want to stop when it's too much stress on your body but that's not for a while."

He shrugged. "Sure, if you want to. Picking a blue suit isn't that exciting." He chuckled. "Doesn't everyone sing? If I'm drunk enough I suppose that I might even do it in public, or a squadron room after a mission, but no, I don't sing. I play the guitar and the piano. The first because it was cool, the second because my mother thought it'd be a good way to broaden my horizons. I don't know about that, but I was always a lousy guitarist, so many she was right."

"And if it does, you can laugh at me all you want," she replied, smiling. She found she got heartburn more than she ever had anyway. Nobody had mentioned that part of pregnancy beforehand.

"He's going to have to be a lot more careful about what he says if he's going to train three pregnant women with superpowers. It's not like we're at our most rational or non-hormonal," She rolled her eyes. "No but then he also knows that Savannah probably knows what not to do. Jenna and I need to be told, especially Jenna seeing as she's further along."

"Well if I have to go buy a dress, I want to look good. You can help out there, right? As long as you don't call me a whale, I won't throw anything at you," Kensi studied Robert's hands. People always talked about pianists having some kind of special hands and fingers though she didn't see what was different about Robert's. "There I was hoping you were the tubby kid with the French horn," she teased. "So how long did you play for? Did you have to do recitals and stuff?"

"Or you can learn to eat early so you don't feel sick," he answered, chuckling.

"I'm sure he'll learn pretty soon. Just hit him where the sun doesn't shine and he'll figure it out that you don't even need superpowers to kick his ass." He wasn't even sure that they needed hormones as an excuse, not these three. "And again, I don't think he cares about people knowing the reasons why they can or can't do something. He never bothered before whether people knew things or not."

Robert nodded. "Of course I can. Shopping is my superpower." The budget was what was missing. "You're not a whale... yet, but anyone looks like a whale if she picks the wrong style. We'll find something that looks great on you." He chuckled. "I was way too cool for that." He looked at her in horror. "Recitals? Fuck no. I had a private tutor since I was about six and you don't have recitals, you show your skill at your mother's parties at least when you're young and cute, then your voice breaks and you have a band in secret in the guest house, even though it's not a secret, while you keep studying Bach, and then you reach the end of high school and stop playing all the classical music and just play around for kicks."

"Now why hit him there when I can throw knives. After all, that's what we're supposed to be doing so it's not like I'd be doing anything wrong. Just hitting a moving target," Kensi still didn't see what he was going to teach her considering she was awesome with knives. "This was before he was going to be a grandfather and Jenna's stubborn in case you didn't notice."

"Yet?" Kensi raised her eyebrows. "Man, don't make me castrate you this early into the pregnancy. You haven't been too annoying yet," she added with a mischievous smile.

"I just wondered," Kensi thought that it was kind of cute, the idea of a smaller Robert playing the piano at parties. "Let's hope this kid inherits your musicality then. I never did any of that stuff. I was much happier in a garage than in a music room."

"Because hitting him in the nuts hurts his pride. Stabbing him sends you to jail and makes you look like you're crazy or not good enough," he said, chuckling. "If there's one thing that will get a man's attention all the time is that." Robert snorted. "And Sam is Sam."

He grinned. "I'll be able to move faster than a whale," he said, laughing. "It all works out."

Robert shook his head. "I'm not that talented. I studied, but I'm not one of those people who could write music or give a great interpretation of the classical pieces. You can study an instrument all of your life, but that doesn't give you talent."

Kensi giggled. "I guess so. I have a feeling most of the guys would think that was over the top, however."

"And even if you can't, you can still teleport. You suck," she told him, chuckling. "You know, Dom was talking about diaper duty when the child's born. Do not think you're teleporting out every time it needs doing."

"Did you enjoy it?" she asked. "I dated a guy in a band once. Back when I was about sixteen," She didn't have that much of a memory of that year. She'd been inconsolable after her dad was killed and she'd taken comfort where she could get it. "He wrote a song about me, how cliched is that? I thought it was so romantic at the time."

"And yet, totally justifiable from a pregnant woman who's been insulted. A lot more acceptable than knives," he answered, laughing.

"I most certainly don't suck." Especially now that he was barely speaking to Mike, sucking was not part of any pleasant activity done during his free time. "I'm sure we have an uncle who's very excited about this baby. We can drop it off with G and pick him up when he's house trained," he joked... maybe.

"I didn't mind it when I was little. Playing with my friends was fun. Rehearsing Bach for an hour daily was a fucking pain in the ass. Let me tell you, I was never as happy as the day we moved on from Bach." He snorted. "Sorry, I never wrote romantic songs about anyone. Or any type of songs. I wasn't interested in being an artist. Playing always get you more girls, especially the guitar, which is the entire reason for me trying. Then I realized that I had girls with or without the music and decided that football, charm and money would be great substitute for talent."

"It's potty-trained not house-trained, even I know that one, and while I think that's a great idea, I doubt Uncle G will be so enthused about dirty diapers," She smiled. "However, babysitting duty? I really plan on taking advantage of that."

"There I was hoping for my own song," Kensi teased, laughing. "So no buying you a Bach CD for your birthday then. What position did you play at football?"

So it wasn't an in-depth conversation. But little by little, she was starting to get a bit more of an idea about Robert. "Did you ever have anybody important back home?"

And this was what she was dreading, the return question but Robert had been nice so far. Perhaps, just maybe, he wouldn't press.

"Potty-trained, house-trained, not much of a difference, especially if we can rope Sam and G to do it," he answered. He had a feeling that it would be much easier than she thought. "Yes, we really need a babysitting with the extensive social life we have. Remind me to start interviewing for the nannies soon," he said, sarcastically.

"Just don't hold your breath. Sam says it's no good for you," he answered, laughing. "Oh I don't care. In fact, I like some of his pieces. I just hate playing it." He rolled his eyes. "What position? Really? I'm talking women and you ask? I was the quarterback."

Robert shook his head. "Nope, no one, other than my mother, but she's dead."

"Sam and G? They're partners, not surrogate parents," Kensi replied, shaking her head. "Oh, I meant babysitting the baby and you," She grinned. "I can have some free time, they get you both. And who knows where we'll be or what we'll be doing by then."

Kensi was going to reply to the Bach or the football comment but then Robert mentioned his mom and everything else seemed irrelevant.

"Never?" Kensi had to admit she was a bit shocked. Robert had talked about women when they were in St Lucia but she had been preoccupied at the time. "That's- You're good-looking, charming and like you said, back home you were rich. Why wouldn't you have found someone?"

"No, they can be the happy uncles. Really, they'll love it. G wants a family. Sam already has the experience. Between the two of them, they can deal with it, and we can both have free time." He planned to use that every chance you got.

"Because I wasn't interested in relationship," he said with a frown. "Why do you sound so shocked? All of the people from NCIS seemed to despise relationships anyway, or did before coming here." God, they were so fucking annoying with their double standards, but even that wasn't enough to make him stop smiling for long.

"I love my planes, which bring me to a base at the foot of a mountain in Italy, at least recently. I had no interest in finding a wife just yet," he said with a shrug. "Eventually, I'd have found the right person, with the right pedigree and the right expectation to become my wife and the mother of my children." Possibly to coincide with the opening of his company. Wives were very helpful when trying to show stability.

"How is Sam this child's uncle? Is this part of the big, slightly weird family thing again?" she asked, looking at him. "I still have to get used to that."

"I don't know why. Probably because your life seemed more normal. I don't think we despise them as much as we didn't think it was possible to really have one before coming here. We hardly had the most conventional of lives," she replied, tapping her fingers on the table out of nervousness. "When Dom died that made me all the more determined to not have somebody. I don't know about the others."

Kensi paused, listening. She wasn't offended, she knew she wasn't what somebody with Robert's lifestyle would have chosen. "So the polar opposite of me then?"

Robert didn't even bat an eye, but nodded. Maybe people weren't such good liars, but they should be. "It's that weird family again and plus I need Sam since G wouldn't know what to do with a child."

"You are stationed in one place, while I moved around, usually in foreign countries, and going back home for two weeks at a time. You had more chances to find someone than I did," he pointed out.

He nodded. "Pretty much, but then we're not married, we're not home, and you don't need to impress businessmen, we don't need a prenup, so it really it's irrelevant who I would have married."

"He's resourceful. I'm sure he'd figure it out eventually but adding Sam into the mix probably isn't a bad idea," She smiled. "Probably less near-death misses."

"Again, it's more the job rather than where we're based or meeting somebody. That's never been a problem," she said, smiling. Some of her dates had been great, some not so great. And she'd learned easily enough that commitment didn't work. Although it wasn't like she hadn't tried. "Ask your brother and Sam. I'm a perfect first date."

"I'm just surprised," she said honestly. "I really thought there would have been somebody who you thought might be the one. Nothing more to it than that, I promise."

Robert snorted. "G wouldn't kill him, inadvertently or not. He might teach it to shoot a little too soon, but that's not exactly a bad thing. Still Sam can show him about diapers, and we don't have to worry so much."

He shrugged. "It's the job and the moving around for me." And mostly the fact that he didn't see why he should marry anyone so she could live off of his money while he was somewhere else. "I don't have to ask; I know. Th first date wasn't the problem," he said, with a laugh.

"I don't see why you should. The type of woman I'd marry wouldn't live on a base in the middle of nowhere, and long distance relationships don't work." He smiled. "I didn't think. I had the one: my plane. That was worth more than any relationship."

"I know. He'll make a great uncle," Kensi knew that if anything happened to her or Robert, their child would have its greatest protector in G. She touched her stomach. "You know- If anything was to happen to us... What do we need to do about our child's legal guardian? Because I don't know about you but there's nobody else I'd want looking after him or her except your brother."

"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, raising an eyebrow and smiling.

"No, they don't work at all," she agreed, refusing to look downcast. When he carried on, she frowned. "I really hope you're not about to admit you're one of those freaks who gets off - literally - on cars and planes. Because ewww," She wrinkled up her nose.

"He will." G wanted this child more he did. "You know that if anything happened to us, legal guardianship would mean shit. I bet they'll have back up birth certificates with G as the father whether we want to or not, but yes, between G and Sam, this baby would be well taken care of. We can talk to him, if you like, although I'm pretty sure it's a given."

He shrugged with an innocent expression on his face. "Just that the first date was fun, and I'm assuming that by date you mean fuck," he said, laughing.

"Exactly, and since I knew that, I wasn't about to get a girlfriend. My commission and my plane were more important." He shook his head. "No, my cars are my mistresses," he said with a wink. "My plane- that's something else. Nothing comes even close to that. That's when I'm happy. When I'm flying, I'm alive. It's why I was going to leave the Air Force as soon as they stranded me. I wasn't about to stay on the ground."

"How rude, I went on dates before. I just decided I didn't need to bring my A-Game with you," she retorted, laughing.

"Hey, don't get me wrong. I like cars," Rather too much according to some people but then she'd grown up around them so she thought it was perfectly natural. "I don't know so much about planes. I can hot-wire a Cessna but planes have never appealed as much."

"All right, then we talk to G, make it official and there can be an alternative birth certificate with him as the father," he said. "Does that sound good? We can even have a third one, Deeks and Savannah, cover all of our bases. How's that?"

Robert snorted. "Of course, it's because we are stuck here with not many choices, isn't it? You figured desperation lowers our standards."

He rolled his eyes. "You're such a girl," he teased, and don't worry, you're not the only one that doesn't understand. Most of my friends couldn't understand why I would stay in the Air Force when I could have done anything I wanted or not worked at all. The military life was worth it if I got to fly a Falcon."

"Better," she said although she was still frowning with worry. She didn't know what was going to happen in the future and normally that wouldn't worry her. Back at home, she hadn't known what was going to happen day to day and she was sometimes more reckless than she should have been. Now though, she had somebody to worry about and somebody to be more careful for. It was an adjustment. "Sorry, I know I'm probably worrying unnecessarily."

"We both wanted to fuck. There was really no point in having the date first when there was nowhere nice to go," she said reasonably. "Nothing to do with lowering my standards and I don't want to know if you lowered yours," she added, pre-empting any taunt on his part.

"I love my cars, I didn't realize that made me a girl," She smirked. "So did you always want to fly planes? You mention your mom a lot. Was she the one who encouraged you?"

"I never said you were," he pointed out, "but while I haven't known my brother for long, there is one thing that I'm not worrying about. If anything happens to me, G will do whatever needs to be done to keep the baby safe, and if it's not him, it's Sam, or Savannah and Deeks." Oh fuck, maybe Mike was right about that one, not that Robert wanted to admit that.

"I'm not arguing with you. I'm the one who said that it was fun. You're the one arguing about it," he said, laughing.

"Totally. Girls always like the car, and fucking in the car, and having boyfriends buying them cars." He nodded. "Yes, it was always about the planes and I mention her because it was me and her." He thought for a moment. "No, not really. She encouraged me to do a lot of things, but not planes specifically. Unlike most mothers, she didn't start nagging if I drove too fast, if I was on a bike, but she didn't push toward planes."

"No, I'm not worried about him looking after the baby, Robert," she said. "I'm just not used to worrying about other people. I mean, I worried about Dom, I worried about Deeks but it was as colleagues and friends. This is more than that."

"Boyfriends buying me cars? I don't remember anybody buying me a car. I think I'd remember that. Guilty as charged for the other counts though," she said, chuckling. "Besides it's what's under the hood as much as how good it looks."

"Your dad wasn't around?" Kensi asked, not sure if she was pushing too much. "Your mom sounds like my dad. Actually, he encouraged me to drive faster and I shouldn't have even been driving back then anyway, I was too young."

"Oh that." He probably should be more worried, but then if he was dead, worrying wouldn't change the baby's fate. It seemed more productive to make sure that arrangements were made instead of worrying needlessly.

"You must have the wrong boyfriends, or maybe it's that one date rule you have. Most guys don't buy you a car the first time out, no matter how much they want to get laid," he said.

"A dad?" That had been so far from what he was thinking that he started to laugh. "What? A fake dad to go with the fake mom? No, they didn't give me one of those. Just a possible former agent posing as my mother, it was enough, but I can tell you the cover story if you like. I've heard it for years, but it was always just a story for me, so it never really mattered."

"Yes, that," She frowned, not sure if she wanted to hear the answer to her next question. "Don't you worry?"

"Yes on both counts," she said. "And do you think I don't know that? I'd be worried if somebody did want to buy me a car."

"I don't know, you never mentioned it so I wasn't sure," Kensi looked at him, searching his face for something though she wasn't sure what she was looking for exactly. "Do you want to tell me? I'd like to know more about you, both the cover story and the real one underneath. I just don't want to make you uncomfortable."

She paused, not sure whether to return the favor. "I can tell you about my background too if you want. You'd need to know something more than the surface about me before the baby arrives anyway. Dom pointed out on Saturday that I'm hardly open about myself."

"Not about things that are already taken care of," he said. "I know that G will take care of the baby. Worrying about all the things that could happen to me isn't something that I'm thinking about, because you can be killed in many way, but the end result is still the same."

He smirked. "You never know. You might meet a politician. They do strange things."

Robert shrugged. "Not much to tell, mostly because we have no clue what the story is. If I hadn't ended up here and met G, I wouldn't have known that it was a cover story at all. As for the fake one, he died when my mother was pregnant, left us a lot of money, my mother didn't like to talk about him, which is understandable since it wasn't real. It's a lot less mysterious than you are imagining."

He sighed. "Look, this isn't twenty questions. If you want to tell me something, then tell me. If you think if I should know something, then tell me. I'm not going to push and as far as I can tell, it's irrelevant, because we can't tell the baby any of this, because a baby can't be confused with so many stories. We'll tell him whatever cover story there is in place then and we go from there."

"I'm just interested. It might be a fake story but you grew up with it," she replied. "So sure, it's fake, but it was real to you. It's still your background."

Kensi had been prepared to tell Robert some of her background but he gave her the perfect get out clause and it was too good to pass up. She should have known better as she knew he really didn't care.

"Nope," She smiled. "Nothing to say," She got up from the table and reached for her plate. "I guess I better wash up and sleep. We can work on the cover story another day. I suppose there will be different variations to consider anyway depending on where we end up."

"As I said, it was someone who was a memory, just a picture, I got very little about him, which was fine, because it wasn't like I knew him," he said.

He hadn't expected to get out of this so easily, but he would take the win. "That's fine. We still have months. Good night." Maybe things weren't so bad. He had to deflect for a few more years and then everything would be fine.
