The other gods had accused Hera of being cold and hard to read but Zeus had always found her emotions written large across her face. Maybe it was because he was so in tune with her or maybe because she was far more emotive with him than with the others. In either case, he could see the confusion and conflict on her face. Stay? Go? He wanted her to stay so he wasn’t going to give her any reasons why she should leave.
Then she pinned him with an assessing look and the doctor came out. What was she looking for? That stare more than any of her other scrutinizing ones made him the most nervous and wary.
“All right then let’s talk about the present or the future. Not forget about the past but only deal with that when it comes up.” Knowing them though they were defined by their rich tumultuous history. It was going to come up a lot. Then he said the words that would rip him apart if she agreed. “Or I can leave and never darken your doorstep again.” They were said reluctantly and with obvious effort but for once he was putting her and her emotional needs before his own.
