Maya was picking her way along the slightly wilder side of the island, looking for interestingly shaped sticks and shells and various other debris, when she felt the change in the air. She stood up straight with a gasp, stretching out her precognition as far as it would go in the very short space of time she had. What she Saw made her heart drop. That wasn't natural. It couldn't be natural. She was sure if it was natural she would have sensed it hours, even days earlier. If only she hadn't been so focused on where she was going! The ground shook, and she dropped to her knees instinctively. She could hear the trees creaking in protest above her, and tried to crawl forward, but her long skirt caught in the brush and she found herself unable to move far in any direction, all while she felt the earth's tremor travel through her palms and her whole body vibrated with the sheer force of it. Another burst of precognition made her gasp in panic; with a burst of adrenaline she threw herself to one side just as a tree trunk slammed into the ground where she had just been. She barely had enough time to feel relieved before the ground shifted again and she felt herself falling as though the earth had disappeared from under her. She opened her mouth to shout for help and sand and dirt poured in; she spluttered and coughed and tried to drag herself up with her hands. One hand found something solid and bark-smooth - she latched on with all her strength and tucked her head in as branches and she didn't know what else showered down on her. Something hit her shoulder with a sharp pain that made her cry out, but she held on steadfastly and waited until the earth stopped groaning. Once the quake had died away, she reluctantly let go her grip on the branch and tried to move. She felt another rush of panic as she realised she couldn't move her legs; or anything below the waist - she was trapped in some kind of sinkhole covered in debris. Her head and shoulder hurt where she had been hit by flying stones and things, but she couldn't tell whether or not she was bleeding. "Hello?" she called out, shakily and hoarse. "Anyone out there?" No one replied, even after she coughed away the worst of the dust and tried again. She tried to make herself calm down, because panic and fear made it harder to See, but she really hated being trapped. Must not panic. She had to wait. Someone would come past eventually. Time passed. She wasn't sure how long, although the air got colder around her face the longer she waited. The sun must be going down. She tried to work out how far away from the beach she was. Would anyone see her if they were just walking past? "Hello?" she called again, a tremble in her voice. Surely someone would be looking for her by now. Unless the damage to the buildings was very bad. Maybe lots of people had been hurt. Maybe it was chaos. Maybe no one had had a chance to think to look for her yet. "Someone!" she tried again, the fear rising once again as a strong breeze rushed through the grove and made her shiver. "Anyone? Help... please?" |
