This last week had truly been full of surprises, more surprises than he would’ve given the island credit for having up its sleeve. Asher’s return, the theft in Naomi’s office, and the sudden contingent of Organization agents roaming around the island were a little more than he expected, even just a few months ago. Being a former member of the Organization, he certainly didn’t have anything against them, not in general, but his incredibly distrustful nature put him on high alert nonetheless. So he was happy to have an excuse to wander the island, his daughter in tow, to get a feel for the situation. That excuse today happened to be a stack of first year quizzes that needed grading, but he’d left sitting on his desk this Friday. Over half an hour ago, he’d departed his home hand-in-hand with Alexandra.
After a short stay in the office (during which Alexandra managed to knock over his wastebasket, draw on his desk, and deposit post-it notes all over his walls), Nikolai exited with a pouting daughter on one hip and a folder of quizzes in the opposite hand, finally starting to regret his choice to leave the house today.
“Papaaa,” his daughter whined, poking his cheek to get his attention, and he could sense her pout intensifying without even looking at her.
“What is it, solnyshko?” he asked, turning his head to lift an eyebrow at her, finding himself completely unsurprised when she stuck a spare, bright orange post-it note to his forehead. He could only sigh as she lapsed into a fit of giggling. Today just had to be one of those days, where her manic energy was through the roof; he’d even hidden her Halloween candy, to be doled out only with his permission in small doses, but that seemed to have done absolutely nothing.
As he lifted his arm to remove the post-it note, quizzes fluttered out from the file in his hand, first a few, then a whole pile, and he took a brief moment to stare at them in disappointment. This, Alexandra saw clearly, was her chance so she began wiggling and fidgeting as he kneeled to collect the papers.
“Fine, fine. Be free. Stay close. If you’re good, we can go get lunch from Ronnie,” he warned as he let her run off and gathered his papers, one eye on her as he stuffed them into the manila folder.
Being good wasn’t on her agenda, though. Nikolai could do nothing but watch as she careened into someone and without a second thought, he began shouting his apologies, as he stuffed his folder under his arm. It was a wonder his colleagues even recognized him without his little munchkin running into their knees. At least she wasn’t covered in paint this time. “Sorry, sorry,” he shouted and took the few steps over to the as-yet-unidentified victim, brushing off his knees as he went.
