The most common thing in life, is life And yet every single life, every new life, is a miracle

Maya did not really do Halloween. For one thing, she was English, and it had never been a celebrated thing in the area she grew up, other than the occasional hopeful group of trick or treaters. For the other... well. Anything with costumes and decorations went well over her head. She knew it was meant to be scary, but her idea of scary was a lot different to sighted people. Fear was being lost, getting stuck in a crowd, loud unidentifiable noises. Her siblings had tried to explain it to her once, but she didn't see what could be scary about skeletons and witches and pumpkins. Really, pumpkins? Surely they were still just vegetables no matter what you did to them.
She knew everyone would be out partying on Friday night. She'd been to the party a couple times as a student and it had all been totally lost on her; she knew she wouldn't enjoy it, and she didn't want to ask anyone to spend their evening with her when they could be off having fun, so she spent the evening alone in her blissfully dark and cool living room, marking the online student submissions. On Saturday morning she printed them out - making sure the braille option was disabled on the printer - and walked over to Birdy's house. He probably wouldn't need them until Monday, but she wanted to get some air anyway, and this way he could look over them over the weekend if he wanted.
She realised as she knocked on the door that it was probably still very early. What if they were both still in bed? Before she could pull her phone out to check, however, the door opened. She knew it was Callie immediately; she gave off quite a different vibe to Birdy. "Sorry," she said quickly before the older woman could say anything. "I just thought - is it very early? You probably went to bed late, I'm sorry, I didn't think."
