Daycare wasn't necessarily perilous or demanding. Really, if you kept enough treats and activities around, the kids got their naps, and diapers were changed, you were pretty much set. Though she'd only been running the daycare for the past two months (some still worked enough in the summer to warrant the help), and there were only a couple children to speak of, Faye had discovered she had a rather natural affinity for childcare. She'd learned plenty, too, just observing and helping the other children in how she was going to better rear Cole, taking notes and storing them in the back of her mind for later. With Cole's rash having been taken care of (not the first of many scares which resulted in late-night pacing and nail biting), things seemed to be better under control. But toddlers were wily little things, not exactly cunning but certainly tenacious and adventurous enough to let their whims take them where their feet could now follow. And one of these munchkins let his feet take him out the back door and down the steps in the time it took for Faye to change Cole's diaper and apply his rash cream. When she returned from the nap room and found the door ajar and counted one head fewer than should be there, Faye's stomach dropped and she text Mohini to get her ass over there ASAP so that someone could at least stare at the children still inside while she went hunting for the one who got loose. |
