Melissa hadn't ever really had much of a desire for excessive socializing. She didn't see the allure of big parties, preferring small gatherings where she could talk with just a few people at a time. Things like school dances were overwhelming for her even before she'd been attacked. Since New Years though, she'd been even less social than usual. She knew it wasn't a healthy way of dealing with the trauma and she knew that the counselor they'd assigned her would encourage her towards something more social than sitting alone on a Saturday night with a novel. That fact, however didn't do much to persuade her into attending the function to celebrate the holiday. She'd never been very fond of Valentine's and so the dance was hardly appealing. Instead, she thought she might try something more social than reading, but far less social than being surrounded by the entire population of the island while listening to popular music.
She assumed that Nevan wouldn't have gone to the dance, though she couldn't be sure why she'd come to that conclusion. She'd made a batch of cookies and was going to see how he was doing what with the recent passing of his pet and all. It wasn't until she was already more than halfway to his dorm that it occurred to her that he might not be there. He was much more social than she ever was, so there was a chance he had invited someone to the dance or had been invited himself. But she was almost there and it would be silly to simply turn around now.
When she got to the dorm, she gave a knock on the door and took a deep breath as she waited. He'd either answer or he wouldn't and if he didn't she'd simply leave the cookies and go back to her own dorm and read. At least she could say she tried to be more social.
