The Valentine's dance was a yearly affair as a way of relieving the stress brought on by classes and missions. Held in the student center and decorated by the staff and volunteers, they went all out. The place is covered in streamers, crepe paper, balloons, all pink, red, and white. There are tables of food--sandwiches and other finger food, cakes and chocolate and candy as dessert, predictably in heart-shaped form. Tables and chairs are set up in the back half of the room, all the food and drinks set up on tables on an adjacent wall. The rest is cleared as a dance space, a DJ booth set up in one corner to play music. A few teachers have been asked to chaperone, not with the purpose of keeping couples apart or behaving 'appropriately', but to keep the peace and ensure other rules are being followed. The dance begins at 8pm and ends at 10:45, leaving just enough time to get back to the dorms for curfew. |
