On Saturday, he waited for the sun to peak out from behind the clouds and went to the pool. Swimming was meant to be excellent for exercising his knee without putting any weight or pressure on it. He stripped off his shoes and shirt, leaving them in a loose pile on the shallow side within easy reach, and slipped gingerly over the edge into the water. Despite the cold, it was instant relief. The water held him up, and he could stand, for the first time in five weeks, on both legs without pain. He took a deep breath and submerged completely, striking out for the other side. About half an hour later, he was chilled and tired and his leg was aching from the repeated movement despite the water's help. He drew up to the edge and caught his breath, crossing his arms on the side and letting them hold his weight. it was humbling that he was so exhausted; before his injury he could have swum for over an hour with no problem. His stomach turned a little when he remembered he was going to do a mission the next day. What on earth was he thinking? |
