People died all the time. Every day, more souls crossed to the other side. Darren knew that, but knowing didn't make it any easier. Especially when the soul belonged to someone he'd known in life. He had watched her grow up, more or less. She reminded him of his little sisters, in some ways. And then- she was gone. A horrible tragedy.
He had waited, perhaps too long, for someone to arrange a memorial for her. But no one had. Perhaps they were too caught up in grief. Perhaps things changed too quickly. Days passed. Finally, he realized that what his mother had said was true. If you wait around for Someone to do it, Nobody will. So he became Someone. Which is how he came to be setting up chairs in the Community center on Saturday afternoon. As the clock hand neared four, he looked around the room. There wasn't much pomp, but it would do. People would bring their open hearts, he hoped, and that was decoration enough.
He opened the double doors to the room. After that, there was nothing to do but wait.
