"You're right." Darren stared reflectively at his wine glass in lieu of sharing the sort of eye contact that often accompanies a moment of deep understanding between two people. Maya's differences weren't something Darren thought about much. They'd been friends for so long that a lack of returned eye contact was no longer strange or uncomfortable. It just was.
He sighed. "Feelings would be easier to accept if they had an off button. If there were a way to just stop feeling for a little while. But they always seem to come louder when we're trying not to hear them, don't they?"
