Today was the day.
Polyhymnia had prepared. Mostly because baby showers were easy. A few balloons, some food and gifts. That’s all they really are. Merely excuses for pregnant women to get baby supplies for their incoming brood and another excuse for friends and family to gather together, laugh and tell stories of yesteryear.
In a way, baby showers were a little trite, but the muse of sacred matters was not thinking in those terms at the moment. Baby showers were an important ritual during a time of pregnancy, and the very fact gave her pleasant goosebumps up and down her arms. The fact that it was wildly close to Melpomene’s due date made it urgent.
But, it was not just for Melpomene and the little baby in her belly. No. As Polyhymnia tied the last of the balloons to one of the couches in Erato’s home, she smiled. It was not just for Melpomene at all. It was for all the muses. As anti social and proud of it as even she had been, her heart of hearts longed for her sisters around her. When she stepped into Erato’s home, she could almost feel her sister’s loneliness. Her other sisters all so spread out…
The ancients said the muses were many beings with one mind. But the muses might as well share a single soul in their unity. The youngest muse settled on the couch to rest as her long white hair flared out beneath her. Gathering together would make them happy.
Ugh, she was tired. At least Erato was on cooking duty, though what she was cooking, the muse on the couch did not know. Perhaps it would be sandwiches with a sampler of jams. Who knew? She certainly didn’t.
But looking up at the few balloons, kept low in numbers for Melpomene’s sake alone, she smiled again. This gathering would be good for them. They would be happy together. Divine mission complete for another day.
Now all she could is wait in Erato’s lovely living room. Thalia would bring Melpomene soon and others would arrive, too. Invitations had been sent out and everything. And they all just had to be happy. No one could be upset when balloons were around. She dared them to try.
