Who: Persephone and Demeter What: Baby surprises Where: A cafe When: Before the scene with Hades Warnings: None
It was time. Demeter smiled as she looked out the window at the clear beautiful day. Now that Zeus knew, it was time to let those dearest to her know of her "condition". She picked up her cell phone and brought up the number of her eldest daughter.
"Hello?" Dahlia cooed into her phone. She had looked at the phone number first. When going through a break up, a girl could never be too careful about screening phone calls.
"Hello dearest," Demeter said happily, her voice full of sunshine and rainbows. "How are you doing today? Are you busy? I'd really like to see you if you have the time."
Dahlia looked around at the mess of clothes littered about her condo that she had no desire to get in order. "I think I can pencil you in~ Do you want to grab a bite to eat?"
There was a momentary pause. "That would be nice. Something light though. I've not been in the mood for heavy breakfasts in the least lately."
"Okay...I know a good place." She sounded off the directions to her mother, making sure the elder goddess understood them before hurrying out the door.
Though she still wasn't really all that crazy about being in areas with too many people, for her children she would go to the moon and back. Since Zale was at school, it was no trouble getting herself together and out on the road. Eventually she found herself pulling into the parking lot of the place Dahlia told her about and she stepped out, looking for the familiar face.
Dahlia was waiting at a table. She smiled, waving her mother down. "Hi~ Oh I've missed you~"
Demeter's face lit up as she went over to her daughter, giving her a hug before taking a seat herself. "I've missed you too. How have you been, dear?"
"Great. Busy. Busy busy busy..." Dahlia shrugged, swishing a straw through her juice. "Moving and stuff. It's funny how many personal possessions get scattered when you have more than one property."
"Ahhh... I see," Demeter gave her daughter a sympathetic look. "Must be a trying time for you." She reached out and placed her hand over her daughter's. "Are you alright?'
"I'm fine," Dahlia replied. Better than fine. "Honestly. It's good being on my own again."
"Well I'm glad that you're content.," the earth goddess said with a smile
"You seem happier than usual today," Dahlia observed. "Not that I'm complaining, but....is there any reason?"
"Well... there is something," Demeter murmured demurely as she sipped her juice. When she looked up at her daughter, she had a certain glow to her that was subtle, but unmistakable. "What are your thoughts on having another younger sibling to look up to you?"
"You're pregnant!?" Dahlia squealed, far far far too happy for words.
Demeter blushed warmly and nodded, her expression filled with as much delight as her daughter's.
"I am. I'm not that far along, as you can tell, but he or she is alive and well."
"Oh Momma, that's the best news ever....you don't even know!" Dahlia smiled, her eyes tearing as she got emotional. She motioned for her mother to lean in closer.
And lean in closer she did. The earth goddess went to her eldest daughter with open arms. "I'm so glad you're so happy. I haven't yet told Zale that he'll be a big brother soon. I wanted you to be the first of my children to know." She gave Dahlia a kiss on the cheek.
Dahlia held her mother there. "[I'm pregnant, Momma.]"
Demeter's eyes went wide as she stiffened a little bit in her daughter's embrace. She backed off a little bit and looked Dahlia in surprise. "You're.... pregnant....?" Her own eyes began to whell up with tears. "You really are pregnant?" Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Yes...it's going to be a girl," Dahlia smiled brightly, feeling as emotional as her mother.
"That's..." Demeter rushed forward and hugged her daughter tightly once more. The tears flowed freely now. "That's wonderful! I didn't think I could be happier than I already was, but I am!"
"We can be pregnant buddies!" Persephone giggled, holding onto her mother as tears spilled out of her eyes.
Persephone's mother laughed delightfully as she sat back, brushing the tears away from her face with her hand. "How far along are you? When will my little granddaughter be born?" Granddaughter.... such a beautiful word. Demeter had dreamt of this day for so long.
"Not very far...just two weeks or so," Dahlia admitted. "[We're probably very close in due dates...]"
Demeter nodded. "That would sound about right. But you're fortunate that you know the gender of your child. My little one.... He or she is being reluctant to reveal anything to me. I'm not sure how they are doing it, but I just can't tell."
"What are you hoping for?" Dahlia asked, taking her mother's hand.
"I don't know," Demeter said, squeezing Dahlia's hand. "Doesn't matter if they are a boy or a girl. I'm just happy that I'm having a child to begin with. I wasn't sure.... After Noah left... If I'd ever...."
"Oh momma, don't be silly..." Dahlia laughed. "There's so much life beyond that fishman."
The goddess blushed and smiled a little bit. "I know love. I know..." She sighed and gave her daughter a kiss again on the tops of her fingers.
"We should go baby shopping...and maybe take classes together!" There were so many fun things they could do.
"Quite. I've already started turning the guest room in my home into a nursery. Have you thought about that yet?" There was so much they could do now, and Demeter was ready to look forward to it all
Summary: Demeter calls her daughter out to confess about her new baby, but Persephone has a surprise of her own.
