Who: Euterpe & Calliope
What: Lunch & news-ish stuff
Where: Random cafe
When: Backdated to just before the family battle-planning/interrogation scene
Warnings: Some minor emo, but not much. Also, when I forwarded the scene to myself to edit - apparently some small chunks were lost.
Euterpe eyed the phone in her hands as she walked down the street towards one of her favourite places for lunch. She didn't feel like eating alone on this particular afternoon, and so now she flipped through the numbers in her mobile until she found a sister she really needed to catch up with. Calliope.
So she pressed the handy little green button and waited. Hopefully she didn't just get voicemail.
Calli jumped with surprise when she heard the phone go off. She dove from the bed and to the table, picking the phone up. "Hello?" she asked, as she didn't have any numbers programmed in yet.
"Hello~" Came the reply from the other end, and she realized that she didn't remember Calliope's mortal name. "It's Euty." Get the hint, please get the hint.
"Oh hey!" she said, smiling brightly. A sister, joy! She cleared her throat. "Temperance speaking." She didn't remember Euty's mortal name either. Eek!
There was a sigh of relief from the other end. "Hello Temperance, it's your sister Piper. You up for some lunch?" She asked hopefully, well, as hopefully as she could manage lately.
"Piper! It is so good to hear from you. I would love to have lunch," she said, rushing around the room to gather her shoes. Slipping them on, she waited for a response.
"Awesome," She had, appropriately enough, reached her destination and looked up at the sign as she spoke. "I'm already there, I'll get us a spot inside." Euterpe had a special table at this particular Greek restaurant, and shared the address with her elder sister.
"See you in a few," Calli said, hanging up the phone. She dashed out, deciding to take her mini cooper the short distance to the restaurant.
Once there, she parked and walked in, looking for her sister.
Euterpe had headed inside just after the phone call and was taken to her usual table, which was a secluded booth off to the far side of the room. Upon seeing her sister enter, she waved. It was truly hard to miss a waving woman with pink, purple, and black hear wearing a brightly coloured tank top and jeans. The only people who could miss her were the blind and the colorblind.
Calli did notice her sister immediately, and felt a bit bland compared to her. She wore capri jeans, a deep red tank top, and flip-flops; and had her hair pulled back at the nap of her neck. She walked over and hugged her sister briefly before sitting. "Thanks for calling," she said, smiling brightly.
Despite the bright colours, Euterpe was not as cheery as normal. Normal being before she was used as a means to get to her father. Since then, no matter how much she smiled or how cheery she tried to seem, there was always a strange shadow behind her eyes. Euterpe hugged her sister and flopped back into the bench. "You're welcome. Thank you for coming along," she said, returning the smile.
A frown creased Calli's brow and she leaned forward, studying her sister. "Something troubles you," she said. She had been a bit unaware of many of the goings on of late - except what Poly had told her.
Euterpe shifted a little, showing her discomfort on having it pointed out. "Something always troubles me, sister," she stared at the table between them with a frown. "I am a broken Muse."
Calli's eyes grew wide and she reached across the table, gently lifting Euty's chin. "That cannot be possible," she said, her eyes searching her sister's. "You seem distant, but not entirely gone."
(( In which a few emails were lost, but Euterpe talks about her past situation with the Cyclops))
"It may not have been, but I still wish for you to let me know what bothers you," she said, smiling sympathetically. "We have all done things in our past that we regret or wish were different. You cannot blame yourself for those actions. You can only change now and live for the future."
"It was not my fault, that I know. Still, I was forced to act against the family." Euterpe paused as the waiter came over to take their order. This was not a discussion she wanted to have at all, let alone with mortals listening in.
Calli took the hint and ordered her favorite Greek dish - Giovetsi. She turned her attention back to Euty, wondering if they would ever be able to finish this conversation. Perhaps they could go somewhere more private after lunch.
(( Again, lost emails. Euterpe changes the subject to a side project that she believes Calliope would be interested in. ))
Eyebrows raising with interest, Calli smirked. "Oh? And why would I be interested in your project?" she asked, placing her elbows on the table and her head in her hands.
"Because," she said with a small smile, "He reminds me very much of your son."
Her face went pale at those words. "O... Orpheus?" she whispered, the name barely audible. Her hands clenched the side of the table, her knuckles going white.
Slowly, Euterpe nodded. She leaned forward over the table to whisper, "I met this man in the park. He has a voice I have no heard since the days when Orpheus walked the earth."
Calli was shocked. Nearly shocked speechless. She found her voice, however. "I don't believe it," she whispered, her eyes blinking back tears. "When can I meet him?"
"Soon," she said and held her hands up. "Mind you, he may have nothing to do with Orpheus, but he might, which is why I want you to meet him. His name is Damien Carroll, and I've gotten him a gig a couple nights a week down at Vice." Euterpe sat back in her chair, then, as their lunch arrived. If anything would be able to confirm that her instincts were right and she hadn't gone completely insane, it would be a mother's intuition.
Calli nodded slowly, her mind going back to when Orpheus had walked the earth. Her son had been a wonderful blessing. She thanked the waiter, then took a bite. "I would like that, very much," she said, glancing up at her sister.
Euterpe smiled. "Good. He's got a gig coming up, I'll let him know I'll be there," and no, she wasn't going to warn him about the presence of her sister. "And you can justify that I'm not going completely nuts."
Calli nodded. "I really do hope you are going nuts," she said, sighing slowly. "What if he is back? That will be a really big... shock..." she said, playing with her food.
Euterpe frowned. "Then that means he has a second chance to live a normal life, or as normal as possible. And if it is possible that he somehow got... reincarnated," she paused to eat. Unlike Calliope, her appetite was not going away due to this conversation. "Maybe that wife of his did too."
Calli nodded. Perhaps that could happen. She could hope for as much, as she missed Orpheus more than anyone else from her past. "We'll see then, I suppose," she said, digging in now. Some of the nerves were dissipating, and she was getting her appetite back.
Euterpe shrugged. "We'll see what you think when you meet him. Could always talk to our uncle, and see if it's possible." Meaning Hades, of course. He'd probably know. Maybe.
With a nod, Calli smiled finally. "I look forward to it," she said, munching on her chicken happily now. What a mood-swingy muse!
Summary: Euterpe decides to give Calliope a call and share her sneaking suspicions about a certain newbie musician in town.
