Who: Mel and Nick
What: Welcome home~
Where: Nick and Mel's house
When: Friday evening
Warnings: Nakedness near the end, but not explicit.
She wasn't entirely sure what to make of the current situation with her uncle. It had gone beyond complex in a heart beat, and now she was back at the beach side residence that was her actual home. She'd opened the garage and was parking her car, when she could already hear Shadow, barking and running to the door that connected the garage to the inside of the house. Mel closed her eyes and rested in her car seat for a moment. The story she'd used with Julie wouldn't hold with family. She still needed to think of one.
Inside, a pot on the oven was bubbling. On the living room floor on a blanket were the Lot twins, burbling as they swung around stuffed animals and played with the rubber toys suspended over them. Nick was in the kitchen, making up some ramen noodles for himself. He heard Shadow, and then the door, and turned to look towards it. "Hello?" he called. "Mel?"
Up the stairs to the main floor she went, not fully thinking about what she was expecting once she got there. But the door creaked open, and Shadow's face was immediately against her. She bent near him to accept the doggie kisses, scratching him before she answered the questioned. "Yeah." Tired, she decided to simply close the door behind her and sit right there on the floor as she properly greeted her dog once more.
Nick made sure the noodles weren't going to overflow before he headed out, ready to hug and kiss until he noticed her on the floor. He almost wanted to scowl at the dog. Hey! He was supposed to get greeting rights. Hmph. "You don't look too hot."
She looked up at him, eyes tired, and nudged the dog away. If he wanted greeting rights, he should have been the one to get to her first. She raised both hands out to him, part in request for him to help her up, and partly in request for a hug or other greeting.
He had to smile then, and hoisted her up by her hands before pulling to her in a tight hug. "Missed you," he murmured."
"Mmm." Mel's eyes closed and she nuzzled against his chest, comforted by the easy love. "I said I'd be back," she murmured to his shoulder, words running together slightly. See, she hadn't run off.
He nodded, unable to admit to the relief that she had returned. Communication in a relationship was needed, but sometimes so was silence. "We've got guests. And food cooking."
Guests? Her eyes opened and she peered over his shoulder as best she could, looking for this guest. Then she eyed the pan and wondered if Nick's cooking skills were up for the task. She sighed, and started to pull back, bracing herself for whatever she found.
As if on cue, the twins cooed in unison. They were definitely going to be one of those twins that ran around, pulling pranks on people while pretending to be the other twin. Fabulous. "Hestia said she had a woman who was demanding to have her living room redone or... something. And she said she couldn't find Hades, so I offered."
Oh. Hestia had mentioned something about that. She nodded absently and began to walk over into the kitchen, seeing what there was for food. Hopefully there was be something decent around.
Noodles were cooking in the pot, which Nick returned to once Mel wandered away. "Are... you okay?" he asked her quietly, looking her over with concern.
She peered down at the noodles. That would do, but probably wouldn't be enough. She moved on to the fridge to peer inside, simply nodding at his question.
"Grab yourself a bowl." He already had one set out for himself, not expecting her for dinner. He pour half of the noodles into this, waiting for her to get a bowl so they could share.
Ah, some iced tea she'd made a few days before. THat would work. She pulled it out and grabbed a glass, then a bowl for him to pour some soup into. At least it was hot and easy to eat.
Nick arched an eyebrow at her. Either she was stoned, or deprived of sleep. He poured the noodles into her bowl. "So... what's going on?"
eing stoned would probably get more reaction out of her. This was a mixture of lack of sleep and constantly trying to be aware of someone who wasn't doing much. She picked up her bowl, plucking some of the noodles form it with her fingers and dropping them straight into her mouth. "Family emergency."
Ahh. He sat down with his noodles and stared down at them. In other words, "not the mortal's business". "Anything serious?"
Lie through her teeth or give him the honest answer. She took a seat as well, debating for a moment. "Serious enough. Uncle's phone broke." She began to dig into the food.
That explained why Hades hadn't sent Nick out for lunch food or diapers for the past few days. He'd been curious about that, but had ultimately decided not to poke a potential hornets' nest. "Oh." That didn't seem serious at all... "You just seem really... tired?"
She took a few bites of food, trying to think of an answer that wouldn't break her promise, but also would show a small bit of depth of the problem. She lowered her voice to a whisper. "We had ichor to clean up."
The mortal's eyes widened and he put down his fork. "Is he hurt?"
"He's fine." She picked at her noodles.
"Oh. Uh, that's good." He looked back down to his noodles, suddenly not hungry now that he had the mental image of Hades being stabbed with his iPhone stuck in his head.
It was better then the image of him tearing his own godly flash to bits. She forced the image of all the ichor away, and went back to eating her noodles. "I'm going to make him the legal secondary guardian, after us, for Helen."
Buh? He snapped his head back up again. "That was random. Why him?"
Mel blinked. "Why not him?"
"Well, why do we need a guardian?" He gestured to Mel. "You're immortal."
"If something happens to you," which it will .... She ignored the thought. "... we should have someone else."
"But... you're immortal," he pointed out again, wondering if she hadn't heard him. "If something happens to me, there's still you."
"He's immortal too." She lifted her head to look at him in the eye, wondering if she'd have to spell it out for him.
Possibly. He looked deeply confused. He was mortal. He could die. He knew this. But if she couldn't die, why bother getting a guardian if she'd be the--
Wait. Was she trying to tell him something? He felt his chest tense nervously.
She glanced down at her bowl, now nearly empty, and pulled the last stray noodle from it before sanding to put the bowl in the sink. "I might need help." Or be faking her own death.
"What kind?" he whispered. WHy couldn't he speak louder? Fear suddenly nestled on his chest, making him feel like he had been pushed undewater. The pressure...
Did he really think that Mel wouldn't be effected b him dying? She turned and peered at him, blank faced, trying to figure out an answer. "Support."
"Mel... is something going on? First you leave without warning, you say Hades has been hurt, and now you say the baby needs a godfather." He reached for her hand, and squeezed it tight.
She shrugged, moving to him, and trying to indicate her desire to crawl into his lap. "It would make him happy. It's good to be safe."
His heart was still thundering. Unsure. Unsafe. "Is something wrong with you?" He reached for her, tugging her onto his knees.
She curled up on his lap, tucking herself against his chest. She could hear that thundering heart beat now, and tried to calm it with a kiss to his throat. "No."
Nick closed his eyes. Okay. If it were serious, she'd say. Right?
He wasn't relaxing. Instead of easing his worried mind with her return as she'd intended, she'd made him worry more. "Everyone has a back up plan."
"You promise?" He ran a hand along her back, partly to relax himself and partly to relax her.
Promise? Why were there so many promises that she was being asked to make lately? She sighed. "Promise what?"
"That there's nothing wrong with you. You left all panicked, and now you're very... well, even more lethargic than usual." He turned her face to his, mustering up a small hopeful smile.
"I used a lot of energy..." she explained, looking up at his face. Most of it had now been recovered, but that didn't cover for the watchful nights that she had had.
"Ah..." Maybe he was just asking too much. He hugged her gently and planted a kiss to her forehead. "How about you go take a bath, I'll break out the ice cream, and we can the sack after Hestia picks up the twins."
Mel nodded, but made no motion of movement. She'd rather just leave herself planted there, or maybe say hi to the twins, gathering them and Shadow in the living to watch a movie or something. She was ready for a chance to zone out.
Ahh, he knew this role. Standing, he grunted as he held her frame to his chest and made for the stairs. He'd become skilled at grabbing her pajamas with one hand and not dropping her with the other, and put her down on the bathroom cabinet. "Maybe I should take it with you," he purred.
Ah Nick, he'd learned well. There was a small smirk from the muse at the suggestion, and she wrapped her legs around him to pull him closer. "And the twins?" What would they do with them? They'd probably be fine for awhile if they were someplace asleep, but she had no idea if that was even possible.
She had a point. He moved away to look down at them, seeing them still playing happily with their toys. "Look safe enough to me. Unless Shadow turns tail, and eats them like biscuits." Equally unlikely. He returned!
As long as they were contained and couldn't really roll over anywhere -- could they roll over yet? -- then they probably were. At least for the moment. She opened her arms to him, welcoming him back. "I think Shadow would be more likely to push them back where they belong."
"He's a good dog." Off came her shirt. He did his best to not be turned on by the sight, because his body was used to thinking this would lead to something else. No, she said she was tired, just time for a bath.
Mel's body probably wasn't helping in his task any either. Her pregnancy was starting to become a bit more pronounced to those who knew what they were for, or that there was anything to look for. Her shirt off, she reached to him and started to return the favor.
He noticed her stomach and paused to look. Wow... But when she pulled off his shirt, the stun was gone, and he reached forward to lay a hand along it. The warmth under his hand was comforting. "{You're beautiful,}" he whispered.
It wasn't that big yet, was it? Maybe she was only fooling herself. But at his action, she covered his hand with her own, looking down at both of them. Her child. She wondered if this one would fare any better then the others. She was quiet for a moment before looking up at him again. Did he mean it?
From the smile on his face, he was either very honest or extremely good at lying. Tugging off her pants, he set her down in the tub and started to run the water.
Mmm, bath. It would be very easy for her to fall asleep in that. Sitting up, she looked around her for some bubble bath to add in, pointed to one that was orange blossom, and eyeing Nick. Was he going to join her?
Give him a second! He was caring for her, remember? He poured in the chosen bubble bath and, once it was good and bubbly, the scent heavy in the air, he tossed off his pants and boxers to slid in behind her.
She smiled at that, scooting forward to give him enough space, before shifting again to lean back against him. Her hands moved under the water to gently rub his legs, trying not to think much beyond the single moment. It was easier to ignore anything outside of it.
"Here." He took the loofah and soaped it up, scrubbing along her back. The water was warm, making him a little drowsy as well but he did his best to remain alert. The door was open, so they could hear the kids if they cried, but that'd only work if he was awake.
Paranoid as she was, it was likely that if either of the twins cried even briefly, she'd be alert to it. For now, she moved her hair into a messy bun on top of her head, taking it off her back and aching into her boyfriend's touch. Her eyes closed as she relaxed, enjoying the simple pampering.
Nick smiled and planted a kiss on her neck. Whatever was going on, he hoped she could take care of it. He'd put enough stress on her... mentally and physically. He wished then he could do more. This didn't seem like enough. But, all too much like his relationship with the sea king, he could only stand back and offer loyalty. It was all he had to offer. "Love you, Melly."
And for her, that loyalty and love was worth a lot. She didn't take it for granted because it came from a 'mere mortal' as she had no doubt some of her family would. Instead she settled into the warmth of her lover and the water around them. "{Thank you}," she murmured. Love you too."
Summary: Mel finally comes home after her vigil of her uncle to a worried boyfriend.
