Who: Hades and Persephone
What: Waking up
Where: The bedroom
When: Today
Warnings: A little upsetting, tasteful fade
In the darkened room, Persephone began to stir. It started with the slightest twitch of her brow and traveled to her toes. Waking up from a coma was no easy thing, even for a goddess. A groan rolled lazily in the back of her throat.
In the darkened room, Hades had begun to develop the mile long stare. He knew she would be waking any moment, but she just kept sleeping. Kept sleeping until he heard the groan and the saw the twitch. It broke him completely from his trance and he took her hand once more, “[Love. Are you waking up? Come back to me?]”
Her head swayed lazily to the side, and she let out a soft sigh. Her eyes fluttered open before closing again. "M'sleepy..."
Reaching out, he gently caressed her hair. “[That's the ironic part about sleeping. Too much and you're sleepy...]” Hades couldn't help but smile. She was talking again. He had seen her eyes open. Persephone was awake. “[Did you sleep well? No dreams?]”
Persephone's eyes shot open then as everything came back to her. "[I...I'm okay. I slept fine.]"
“[I'm glad. I was worried that maybe it wouldn't work.]” Sitting in the dark gave Hades a lot of time to think things like that. His body was already beginning to ache him, but her eyes opened was better than morphine and opium combined. He continued to caress her hair, “[I have some pomegranate ice tea for you.]”
She sat up, yawning as she did. She looked up at Hades for a moment, dread setting into her stomach. "Thank you..."
Hades took the glass and offered it to her before, eying her carefully. He was going to let her in on the surprise he had for her at this point, but... “[What's wrong, heart of mine?]”
Persephone took a sip from the glass, delaying the inevitable. "[I think I discovered the source of...of well, everything that's been bothering me. I think maybe I can make all the bad dreams go away now.]"
Hades continued with a true, genuine smile. They were rare on him, but not with her. “[That's great. Can I help you at all?]”
"[I think...]" she took another sip of her tea, staring down at the sheets. "[I think we need to separate...]"
“[Of c...]” Wait, what was that? The smile quickly faded away into a very deep frown as he swore his heart stood still in his chest. Softly, he touched the back of her hand with the very tips of his fingers. He couldn't have heard that right, “[What did you just say?]”
"[I've...tried really hard to...I thought I would be okay with everything that's happened recently, but maybe...I just think the stress of knowing that you're living a life with a family that doesn't...include me..]" She tried to put this as delicately as possibly. "[I think we need some time apart.]"
Hades swallowed hard. It was all he could do to keep the panic down. He could almost feel his soul cringing inside of him and his heart clenching in his chest. “[Love, I know its been hard but... we can talk about this. We can have our own family now. You don't need to not be included... I only waited because I thought you needed the time, not to hurt you these months...]”
"[I think maybe I didn't take enough time on my own to...to sit with the knowledge of you and Hestia. All those bad dreams were about you, Hades.]" The best lie was one sprinkled with truth. "[I didn't want to tell you before because I felt guilty. Like I wasn't trying hard enough. But...I just need more time.]"
The nightmares he thought he was safe to forget were coming true before his eyes. It blinded him to any ability to try to see through her. What she said made too much sense to him... “[I... I never wanted it to hurt you. I told you that... If you had doubts... Why did you say all those other things?]”
"[I...missed you. I was lonely. I wanted so badly for this to work,]" she admitted this freely now and without shame. Her silence was a thing of the past. "[You've been very good to me, but that hasn't been enough. I'm sorry.]"
Hades lowered his eyes, staring down at the sheets of their bed. Their bed... In their house... “[What about when spring came? You said...]”
"[This isn't like the old times. I'm...]" she swallowed hard. "[I'm not leaving because I have to. And I'm not going to go be with my mother. I swear it has nothing to do with her.]"
“[That's not what I meant...]” One hand wrapped hers while the other clenched along the sheets. The opium of her presence, the gentle numbing was long gone. His body felt like his bones had been replaced with knives and his veins with barbed wire. But he doubted it was fence doing that... It was this doing that. “[You were happy... And you said nothing would come between us... That wasn't that long ago...]”
"[If I were happy, I wouldn't be having these terrible thoughts,]" Persephone murmured, pulling her hands from his. "[I guess I was lying to myself when I thought I could make this work.]"
“[That's a lie. I know you were happy... I know you well enough to know that.]” Things had changed, obviously, but not that much. Hades would never believe they had changed that much, but as she pulled her hand from his, he began to doubt. Thousands of years ago he would have simply grabbed it back and instinctively he reached out to do today, but he paused... His fingers just touching her wrist. “[Persephone, let me understand. I ruined this because I missed you?]”
"[You didn't ruin anything,]" she sighed. "[...the timing was just bad. I need time to myself again. To sort out all my emotions. And you need to be with your sons, not split sharing your life between me and them. They deserve better. And you...]" She sighed, reaching up to hold his face in her hands. "[You deserve a whole life. Not two disjointed halves...Please understand.]"
All Hades ever got were two disjointed halves. And he couldn't live like that again. His black eyes simply stared at her for a moment. If this wasn't so serious, he would have wondered if she meant the last comment as a joke, “[Love, how am I supposed to do that when you are my other half?]”
"[You're going to have a very full life with your kids...]" she murmured, leaning in to kiss his lips. "[And it's not like we'll never see each other again. It just won't be exactly the same as it is now.]"
He clenched the sheets tighter as he pressed his lips to hers. Maybe this was joke... He had taught her how to be cruel, he believed...
"[For now,]" she murmured softly, against his lips. "[We only have this goodbye...]" Exhausted as she was, she still managed to push him back down onto the bed. She fumbled with his clothes, whipping them off as best as she could.
Hades fell back to the bed without a struggle, he was too confused and hurt and looking for hope, “[How long are we to be separated?]”
"[I don't know...]" she replied, pulling her nightgown up over her head. "[There is no way of knowing if this is even going to be temporary...]"
He had to get control and had to get answers. The sight of her beautiful skin exposed to the dim light peeking into the room mixed this need with other instincts. Any pain he felt was gone... He moved quickly and grabbed her by the wrists and pinned her to the bed. There was no thought to this action, his mind was focused on other things, “[I need to know if this is temporary or not... I need... I can't wait for autumn and never know if it is coming... Not again...]”
She frowned, staring up at him with pity in her eyes. "[Just...assume that this is a real seperation. The way mortals do it.]"
He could see that pity. See it as clearly as he heard her words. It caused him to tremble. When she woke up he thought all his dreams were going to come true... Her always with him, they were going to have a child.... she could bring their child into the sunlight and he would be beside her to watch... But instead, only his nightmares greeted him. It reflected in his eyes. “[This will make you happy? Not being with me?]”
"[I think so...]" she murmured, squirming out of his grasp and reaching up to touch his neck.
He grabbed her hand and returned it to his grasp, pinning it to the bed once more. In a quiet moment, he let his eyes trail down her body. She was so beautiful... And he loved her so much. Thousands of years ago, he would refuse this concept of separating... Thousands of years ago... He almost smirked suddenly as he realized how they were now... And he brought his eyes to hers. Say what one will, even with his heart shattering in his chest and his soul quaking inside of him, he couldn't help but book end his life, “[Tell me to let you go...]”
"[One last time...as husband and wife,]" she murmured softly. "[Then let me go. Please Hades.]"
The words made him shiver, but he released her at the sound of his name. Instead of pinning her down, he let his fingers trail down her arms softly. One last time as husband and wife. It was so definite It was the final nail in the coffin. “[I finally love you enough to do that.... One last time and then you won't have to worry about me...]”
Persephone nodded, tilting up to catch his lips with hers. She hadn't wanted to do things this messily, but it had been made clear to her that her actions tonight were absolutely vital to her future. She pressed against him, preparing to exorcise a 3000 year old relationship from out of the heart that it haunted.
Summary: Persephone wakes up, and she and her husband discuss the future of their relationship.
