Who: Hades & Persephone, with Hypnos toward the end
What: Comas
Where: The Lot Home
When: Yesterday
Warnings: None
Persephone frowned. Trying to pick one outfit to last you a week plus was hard! When that outfit was sleepware, it was doubly so. She was leaning towards the pink silk nightgown, but she just couldn't be sure. "...what do you think of this one?"
Hades had sat on the edge of their bed for a solid hour as she went through her many clothes in a haze of confusion. He was not quite sure why he was here, “Just goin' to say how beautiful you will look in it. Not quite sure why you keep asking me, love...”
"I need a second opinion," she murmured, holding the gown up to herself and checking herself out in the mirror.
“Is that what this is?” With that he stood and moved to stand behind her in the mirror. Deftly, he took the gown from her hands and tossed it on the growing pile of sleepware she had either decided against or wanted to go back for a second look later. Then he moved and brought a light blue gown and placed it over her in the mirror while he wrapped an arm around her waist to tug her close to him. The gown brought out her eyes and accented her skin, “This one then...”
"...I guess you're right." She took a step back, inspecting his choice. "Fair enough....well that's one preparation down."
He kissed the side of her throat before releasing her and heading back to sit on the edge of the bed, “Did you get done what you needed to with your people Saturday?”
"Yes, yes. Vacation time has been forcibly put in...you would've sworn by their reactions the world was ending," she added a dramatic eye roll for effect.
Hades slumped down to his side on the foot of their bed, “Didn't give them much notice. Handlers hate that.” Silently, he reached out to her... He moved too far to touch her now.
"It's not as if they're not getting their slice of my face even when I'm not working," Dahlia grumbled, cleaning up the mess of clothes on the bed. "I need a vacation or else I'll snap. What is so hard for them to understand about that?"
He stretched a little and caught the side of her skirt between his fingers and lightly tugged it to imply her closer to him, “They probably want you to go on a vacation that could have pictures...”
Dahlia laughed, moving over to her husband. She caught his head in her hands, petting his hair as she leaned against him. "You're probably right...most people would think Fiji was a good time. Me? Coma."
Hades wasn't laughing though he did smile a little at hers and her touch. It was a comfort he never got enough of, “[I do wish there was a better way...]”
"[This is really the simplest solution...I probably just need to destress and then the bad dreams will stop all on their own,]" she speculated.
He nuzzled absently into her hand, “[But isn't that why you went to your mother's for a week?]”
"[Yes, well. I couldn't quite turn off my thoughts...even there, I suppose]" she murmured softly, moving onto the issue of bedding. Were those pillows fluffy enough?
Shifting to balance on an elbow, Hades watched her. So, being with her mother had done little? He would be happy about that if it wasn't upsetting her into a coma... literally. “[I suppose you're right... do my a favor, love?]”
"[Yes?]" Persephoned asked, giving one of the pillows a whack for good measure.
Quickly, Hades reached out and snatched one of the light down feathers that emerged from the pillow with the hardy whack, but then settled back to the bed, resting on his back, “[When this is over, do you think we can at least try to have less last minute plans?]”
Persephone blinked, looking down at her husband. "[What do you mean?]"
“[Coming up with plans that affect the both of us on your own and then giving little or no notice.]” He stared up at her, touching her hand softly as he did so once he figured out where it was. “[Don't get me wrong, I understand why you are doing this and begrudge you not, but its been hard, love...]”
"[Hard?]" Persephone didn't understand. "[I mean...I recognize this whole coma business is a little unorthodox, but...I mean, I just went to visit my mother and now I'm just catching up on some sleep. What is so hard about it?]"
Hades frowned a little at her confusion, but did not stop stroking her hand. He didn't understand how she could not, “[You told me you were going to your mother's for an undetermined amount of time with a text message...]”
"[I was only gone about a week,]" Dahlia replied, the defensive tone slipping into her voice of its own accord.
And her husband bristled just slightly hearing it, “[And I didn't know that when I got the text.]”
"[But you know I'm not...]" Dahlia frowned, clenching her fists a bit in frustration. "[What good is the freedom of time if I can't use it?]"
Now Hades sat up and put his hands on either of her fists. This had gone further than he had thought, “[I am not saying you should not visit her, heart of mine. After all, that would be cruel...]” He didn't especially care about Demeter, but Zale lived there, too. He tightened his fingers around her fists, trying to slip a finger inside of them to make her release her hands and calm down, “[I just want some warning.]”
Her hands relaxed, but Persephone did not. "[Want a schedule? I can stick it to the refrigerator with a magnet. Winter, spring, fall, summer? I'm sure that was very conveinent for you...]" So maybe he had brushed a sore spot.
Hades visibly flinched and released her hands. His eyes remained locked on her, and happiness he had just had watching her try on outfits converted to a familiar distress. She had purposely pressed his own sore spot, “[That is just cruel...]”
"[No. What's cruel is saying that if...if one day I miss my mother and need to see her that I can't do that,]" Persephone spat back. "[What's cruel is that...you can go off to your other family whenever you feel like, and I never say a word. I find ways to occupy my time when you aren't around. But I go to see my mother because I'm having a rough time, and I'm cruel?]"
He placed his hands up in surrender, even though his temper was beginning to flicker against those black eyes, releasing the sadness. He swallowed that back though. No, that would not help, “[That is not what I said. I want you to see your mother. I know you love her. But if its for so long, I want some warning.... at least not a text message. Say it to me. I would do the same for you, if for some reason I ever needed to be away for more than a few hours. I want us to be equals...]”
"[How much warning do you want!?]" Dahlia asked, a note of despair in her voice. "[I told you I was going. You're attached to your phone at the hip. What's so wrong about a text message?]"
Once again, Hades stood. He heard the despair in her voice. He liked it better when it was anger. Gently, he placed a hand to her cheek, “[Shhh, calm, wife. I just don't want to be driving home, expecting to have dinner with you and find the table empty... And,]” His voice hushed and his eyes lowered, “[... Text messages can be faked. Someone could have stolen your phone.]”
"[Fine. I'll call you next time. Whatever.]" Dahlia was still upset, and she just couldn't shake it. She wanted to be out like a light now. She wouldn't have to think about anything then...about her husband, his kids or even about herself.
Hades placed a kiss to her cheek, barely touching but definitely there. He could feel she was still upset just like how he could feel the warmth around her. Things were so different now. Thousands of years ago, he would have walked away at this point and waited for her to calm down and accept this, but not now. Things were different, he was different... or he hoped he was. “[Thank you, heart of mine. Please calm down now? It's not going to help you rest...]”
"[Doesn't seem like much of anything but Hypnos will help me rest...]" she murmured, a touch bitter. "[I think...you don't need to hang around while I'm asleep. It's not like it's particularly helped my dreams anyway.]" That was a dig, and she knew it. Still, she wanted him to understand the depth of her anger when it came to the personal freedoms she'd been promised.
And he knew she knew it. It did not stop him from flinching at it. But it made him take a step back, “[I am not going any where. This world is too dangerous for me to leave you alone in a coma, even if I so wished that.... which I don't.]” Hades sighed lightly. This was an argument lost. It was always an argument lost. But he supposed it was time to call Hypnos, so he began to move to get his phone and do so, “[And there is no reason to be cruel about this. You know what I meant...]”
"[You won't understand unless I'm blunt about these things...]" Persephone murmured, pulling her clothes up over her hand. She slipped into the silky gown and sat down atop the covers.
Leaning against the door of their bedroom, he couldn't help but watch her and the sight managed to soothe him back from where he was. “[You are probably right, love. I do need things clearly said or I twist them.]”
"[Yes. I know how you feel...and that you want to keep me close all the time. Just sometimes it isn't fair...]" This last part was murmured softly enough to make it almost inaudible.
“[I missed you...]” It was almost equally inaudible. It wasn't just the week. It was the thousands of years of dreams and the decades of solitude. He made the phone call without any more delay only to bring himself back to the bed, and sat beside her, “[I'm sorry for upsetting you. We will both be better when you can actually get some rest.]”
Persephone nodded, leaning over and resting her head on his shoulder. "[I'm sure that's the case.]"
He wrapped his arms around her loosely, holding her close to him now. He wouldn't get to hear her speak for a week, he had to hear good things now or else... “[I love you. Always.]”
"[I love you too...]" Dahlia murmured, snuggling close.
After a short while of waiting, at least for the couple, a white-haired head poked into the room. "[You rang?]" asked the sleepy minor god.
They had become quiet, no longer needed to speak. Hades hadn't want to ruin the peaceful moment and enjoyed the words of hers that now echoed in his mind. But hearing Hypnos, he kissed his wife on her forehead and stood, removing himself from her arms, “[The Queen needs you...]”
Persephone shifted, dragging her legs up onto the bed and lying back. She smiled up at Hypnos. "[Thank you for coming on such short notice...]"
He smiled and nodded. "[Next time, I demand a tip.]" But they all knew he was just joking. He was if anything a loyal servant to the underworld's court. He stepped forward and placed his hands on her brow. "[Relax...]"
Hades watched his wife with tender, growing more and more affectionate eyes. His precious wife... All he could do was stand and watch. He touched her hair softly as he offered a silent prayer to Morpheus, whereever he was. To let his father's work succeed. "[Goodnight, wife.]"
Persephone was nervous...rather needlessly so. She swallowed hard, willing herself to relax at Hypnos's touch. Still, there were a lot of ifs when it came to giving up your waking state.
"[Just relax...]" There. Once she was properly relaxed, he withdrew his wand and tapped her forehead. G'night~
Persephone's body slackened, and she felt her mind sinking deep within herself. The peaceful absence of thought or sense was comforting. This was exactly what she had been needing.
Somewhere off in the distance of her mind, the gentle sound of music reverberated
Well, that was nice. She was glad that her inner sanctum was equipped with muzak.
The music grew in tempo until it suddenly stopped and the absence of all began to shift along with a melody that was no longer heard. Images took shape around her...
That...wasn't good. This didn't look like nothing. This specifically looked like the beginnings of a dream. Persephone trembled, wanting out and yet she knew what she had asked of Hypnos. There would be no out this time. Not for a few more days...
Summary: In the lead up to Persephone's coma, she and her husband argue over the terms of their relationship. They somehow manage to resolve this before Persephone is conked out for her supposedly dreamless sleep.
