“[It’s about time,]” she said to figure emerging from the shadows to her right. “[Cutting it a little close aren’t we?]”
“[I had a last minute assignment come up that needed my attention,]” Thanatos said as he finally stepped into the light. “[Took longer to deal with than I expected.]”
“[Sorry,]” Deme apologized with a sigh. “[I didn’t mean to snap. It’s just we only have one chance to get it right for this year. If we miss the opportunity, then we’ll have to wait till Beltane for the next chance.]” She began searching the satchel at her waist.
The death god nodded. “[I understand,]” he said as he looked to the waning light. “[I want this as much as you do, believe me.]”
Demeter finally found what she was looking for. “[Here, this is from Danu for you,]” she said as she gave him a small vial of clear liquid. “[You’ll need to drink half and then pour the rest on the blade of your scythe.]” At the questioning look Than gave her at the instructions, Demeter pulled out the scroll that had come with the vial and handed it to Than. He scanned the words written on the parchment and nodded to himself as he quickly read the more detailed explanation.
“[‘A taste of the waters from the fountain of the Crossroads.... So that when the opening the pathway with my scythe, I will know the location to aim for.’]” It made sense. Without hesitation now, he uncorked the vial and drained half of its contents. He shivered slightly at the taste. It had been a long time since he’d had anything to eat or drink from Otherworld. The water imparted on him an image of the fountain that was the main landmark of the Crossroads, as well as some extra energy to handle the task that was soon at hand. Before he could be tempted to drain the rest of the vial dry, he summoned his scythe and poured the rest on the gleaming blade. The blade greedily drank in the liquid as well and absorbed it without losing a single drop.
While Than was doing this, Demeter was placing the final touches for her part. Since establishing her Grove, she’d been working on this gateway deep within its more secured depths. Before leaving New York, Danu had taught her how to create the structure from the trees she’d been from the celtic goddess. In the end, the structure resembled an archway created entirely of intricate knots. She looked towards the western horizon through a gap in the trees and saw the sun on the brink of disappearing from sight. As it reached that critical point, the gateway began to hum. “[Thanatos, it’s time!]” she exclaimed.
The death god nodded and hefted his scythe purposefully. Then, aiming squarely for the center of the gateway, he slashed the empty air with his enchanted blade. As reality was cut, the living wood of the gateway seemed to pull at the edges of the narrow opening created by Thanatos. The opening was pulled wider and wider until finally the edges of it met the gateway. Only then did it stop growing and the humming stopped.
As the sun vanished over the horizon, a cold, but sweet wind traveled past the two gods from the new gateway. Demeter drew her wrap around her a little tighter, but couldn’t stop from smiling with delight. Neither could Thanatos.
“[We did it... We actually did it!]” he exclaimed in awed disbelief. He stepped forward, moving experimentally through the gateway. It was far colder inside, to the point where he could see his breath on the air. “[This is incredible.]”
Demeter followed him, walking at first, then running as she felt her excitement grow. She wanted to make sure they were where they were supposed to be. The goddess only stopped when she reached the cobblestone pathway that circled a large fountain. “[We’re here. It’s the Crossroads.]” As Thanatos caught up, she walked around the circle, taking note of all the various roads that branched off from the fountain and led to different locations. The paths were all gated off, save for the one they just emerged from. Stepping up to the one which led to Central Park in New York City, Demeter touched it, and it swung open easily. She went around to a couple of others and tested them as well. Grand Central Station. Adirondack Mountains. Long Island. Catskills Mountain. Albany. A variety of other prominent places in the state of New York. Those were open to her.
Experimentally Thanatos went up to the one which led to a region that neither he nor Demeter were allowed to go to in the past, and as he figured, the gate refused to budge. “[Looks like the usual locks are still in place.]”
“[That’s fine.]” Deme replied. “[The only ones that matter to me are open, so I’m content.]” Then she turned to Thanatos. “[Thank you so much for helping. I couldn’t have done this without you.]”
“[No thanks necessary,]” Than said. “[I wanted this as much as you.]” Then he looked at his watch. “[Ah. I have to get going. Will you be alright on your own here?]”
“[Oh yes,]” she said. “[I’m going to go visit Danu for a bit, then return home. Let her know everything went well.
With a tip of his non-existent hat, Thanatos turned to make his way back through the gateway leading back to Miami. Once he was out of sight, Demeter went through the Adirondack gateway to visit with her mentor for a few hours. By daybreak she would be back in her home in far warmer Florida, sleeping peacefully in the hammock in her garden, soaking in the sun and feeling more content and at peace than she had thus far since returning to this place.
Summary: Demeter and Thanatos create an express way to travel from Miami to reach New York State.
