Who: Hades & Persephone (Zale in the background unplayed)
What: A Great Reveal
Where: Playground mostly
When: Backdated to Sunday afternoon. After an Ares/Hades log, after the Haru/Zeus/Demeter log
Warning: None? French speech?
Some would say there was an excitement in the air, a rush, a thrill of victory and success. That was only partly true. It was not just excitement in the air but a very excited ghost, flying and ghosting in a beeline.
In his car, as he drove away from Ares’ ranch, Hades turned up the stereo as loud as he possibly could. There was a calmness in his heart after speaking to his nephew – a calmness put there by knowing that he had an ally in this war that did not mind to get his hands dirty. However, that calmness was surrounded by a wrathful blood lust. Give it to Ares and speaking about murdering their enemies to angry up the blood. A more rational Hades would not have been surprised.
But this one tried to lose himself in his very angry music as he drove to meet up with Persephone and Zale on the play date they had had alone. It was all he could do besides grip on to the wheel and drive as fast as the law allowed him.
The bright sunny happiness of the day was not making his mood any better, but he assumed seeing his wife would soothe the savage beast that speaking to Ares had stirred in him. She could always soothe that beast before.
However, before he made the turn to where he knew she was, he had to bring his car to the side of the road and park. There was a very excited ghost suddenly sitting in the passenger seat. Turning his head, he narrowed his black eyes behind his shades at the specter. “This better be good for you to have left your post, Thomas.”
The ghost nodded, a small smile upon his lips. His excitement might as well have radiated through his ghostly pale, but yet dark brown skin, and seeped out the brutal whip wounded that covered his back and shoulders that probably brought an end to his life. “I found them. Da Jube Spirit is still watchin’ but I came ta report.”
“So you have. Knew I liked you for a reason, Thomas.” Hades responded, making sure he said the spirit’s name again. After years of being dead and more years of being called ‘boy’, among other things, the death lord knew the ghost enjoyed it and he liked making the house ghosts happy – especially since he had no real way of commanding them to do anything besides asking his wife to do so, “Are they stayin’ more than a day?”
“Don’t know, but I gots better news.” The ghost played with the wrists of his spectral white shirt in pride to roll them up properly, “Dat yellow skin fella, Haru whatever… Yer brother made him release dat sister of yers. Really spooked dat fella good.”
“So, she is free? Or is my brother an idiot and did some temporary cease fire or somethin’?” The very concept of the latter made him growl softly. Enemies of this nature should not be negotiated with.
“Nah, nah. Nothin’ like that, I don’t think. I mean, she was all cryin’ and happy like,” the ghost responded with a heavy nod.
With a nod of his own, Hades started the car again and brought it back to drive. There was no time to lose, “Am I the first you told?”
The ghost nodded one last time, “Yessir. Caught sight of yer carriage ‘fore I found da lady…”
“Well, think we should go tell her then,” Hades replied, torn between emotions as he turned the wheel and the car around the corner, parked it once more and sought out his wife in the small park. There she was leaning on a fence, while watching Zale eat an ice cream cone on the jungle gym. He must have caught her just at the right time. Demeter-Child-Only-Holiday having come to a peaceful, ice cream conclusion.
Persephone smiled, watching her brother at play. She hoped no one ever let on to her husband, but she really enjoying spending time with her brother alone. Away from the house. Out in the real sunshine and plants and nature. She crunched down the last bit of her ice cream cone, licking the ends of her fingers. A model eating junk food? How scandalous! She giggled, leaning comfortably against the fence behind her.
Hades had a feeling she enjoyed it, but allowed her to pretend it was a secret. Instead, he snuck up behind her, the ghost following on his heels, and put his hands over her eyes. Lightly in French, he whispered to her, “/Having fun, love?/”
Dahlia jumped a little, her smile growing wide. "/Enough fun.../"
He kept his hands over her eyes, allowing her warmth and comfort to numb his burning anger and the wish to shed blood all over cerement, “/Can those born of Rhea interrupt?/”
Dahlia pulled his hands from her eyes, spinning around to hug him over the fence. "/That depends on what you want to say.../"
Thomas waved to her shyly, as Hades wrapped his arms around his wife. Bringing her as close as he could considering the fence, he leaned in to whisper in her ears, “/Your mother is free.../”
"[What!?]" She squeaked, pulling back to look her husband in the eye. "[Are you sure? Do you swear?]"
“Shhh,” He half commanded as he smoothed back her hair from her face and took off his shades so she could indeed look him in the eyes. There was only truth there. “/Remember the language you are speaking in. But yes. Your father has her now, but stay quiet.../” At those words he looked over her shoulder at the young boy, finishing up his ice cream cone.
Dahlia breathed a large sigh of relief, wrapping her arms tightly around her husband. "/Thank goodness.../"
“/Thomas just told me. This is all very recent./” Quietly, he traced her cheek with the tips of his fingers, bringing his attention back to her completely. “/She might be all shaken up though. We should probably wait for her to contact us about Zale. If he asks, we tell him. If your parents don't contact us within forty-eight hours we tell him, but telling him right now and her being an emotional basket case is not fair to him. Agreed?/”
"/Agreed..../" she murmured, tucking her head onto his chin. Persephone glanced up, smiling at the ghost. "Thank you Thomas."
Thomas return hers with his own bashful smile, and unheard by all but the Underworld Royals, “Yer welcome. De angel man gave the little man a mighty good scare. It was fun to watch and I'm glad that yer happy...”
Hades nodded in agreement, “/As am I. Finally I can bring you some good news./”
"/Yes,/" Dahlia giggled, tapping her husband on the cheek. "/There is that./"
“/... um/”Nuzzling into the touch on his cheek, he closed his eyes, basking in her affection and warmth, though quickly he opened them to keep an eye on the boy in the background, “/When your mother takes him back...You're gonna need to calm me down when she goes.../”
"/Hmmm?/" Dahlia asked, quirking her head to the side. Her eyes peeked around, glancing at Zale. A part of her didn't want him to go. Not yet. She needed a child around her right now.
Mirroring her sentiment, but not for the same reasons, he whispered, “/I don't want to give him back... I just know I have to.../”
"/Don't be silly.../" Dahlia murmured. "/She did it for him. For your children./" It seemed the bitter bug was back.
He held back his scoffing, not wishing to argue. This marriage with her in Miami had gotten him very good at holding his tongue when it came to her mother. “/Regardless,/” he murmured back, “/I don't want to. I just know this is going to bring all my issues to the forefront, love. Just be ready for it./”
Dahlia wanted to laugh. It would bring his issues to the forefront? Instead she just pat him on the cheek. "/Of course, darling.../"
Looking at her, he took the moment to read his wife and smoothed her hair back again. Such disobedient hair today, he blamed the wind. There was what his anger made him miss. With an almost shameful smile, he lowered his gaze, “/But when he does leave... We'll talk about calling Pan, if you want... I don't want to see you come home to childless home any longer. You've endured it too long./”
Persephone bristled, pulling away from his touch. "I should probably get him home."
Hades flinched but he knew that would be the reaction. But he had to put the thought in her head, let the possibility sink in. He grabbed her by the wrist to keep her close, “Shhh, calm, Wife. Be calm. This is a happy day.” For a moment he let his words go silent as he rubbed the inside of her wrist with his thumb softly, before smirking, “Let's see how long it takes for your father to tell us a damn thing.”
Persephone calmed, but she did not cheer up. "Alright. We'll see..."
“But we should take him home soon. It's almost dinner time. Doubt that ice cream spoiled his appetite.” Hades sighed lightly and stroked her hair. He hated upsetting her but sometimes there was no other choice. She would be happy in the long run. But for now, “Forgive your tactless husband?”
Dahlia gave him a little smile. Yes, she would forgive him anything, wouldn't she? They were together in life for better or worse.
He smiled back and kissed her cheek, “You know I would never do anything to hurt you. I want to see you happy always...” There were the implied words of 'You only have to tell me how...' but Persephone knew Hadesese. He did not need to spell everything out for her. His hand slipped down to his and held it tight, “Want to go home?”
"Mhmm," Dahlia nodded, dragging her husband around to an opening so that they could be on the same side of the fence for once.
He eased beside her on the same side of the fence and put an arm around her shoulders as his attention drifted to Zale again. Out in public, he could not help but be protective of the boy. But still he held her close, “We can probably wait a few more minutes if you want... Bask in the quiet of things finally going right for once.”
"That would be nice," Dahlia murmured, tucking in against his shoulder as her eyes stayed on her brother.
It was surreal being happy that Demeter was free. Completely surreal, but holding his wife at his side, he tried not to think about it. His wife loved her and Zale needed his mother. When things went well for the people Hades loved, he couldn't help but be happy for them regardless, “Consider it done.”
Summary: Coming back from Ares' place, Hades receives news from one of the ghosts trailing Haru Sasaki and Demeter the news of her release. Unable to contain it, he went to where he knew Persephone and Zale were having a brother-sister play date and told his wife. The decide to give Demeter some time before telling Zale unless he asks and then the conversation derails. Happy at the end though.
