Who: Hades
What: The Vigilante Strikes again
Where: A Home in the “Shadowlands” Miami
When: August 30, around 4:30 AM
Warning: news articles follow. My clutter-hate puts them here.
The gun fell from his hands in a loud clank, its magazine having been emptied and then the whole instrument of death falling silent. He no longer had use of it. The clank ushered in a deafening silence only broken by the quiet sniffling of three young children, blindfolded and huddled against a wall trembling in fear.
In front of him were the remains of five men, cut almost cleanly in half by the automatic gunfire. With a hint of a smile on his invisible face, he set them up to be ”sitting” in a line upon their severed, gore-leaking torsos. Two of them had not died immediately – those two brought him the greatest enjoyment – their suffering and hopelessness had been like a perfectly painted mask on their faces as they watched their own blood flowing out of them like a river and their own organs racing for escape as gravity dragged them to the concrete.
Hades knew some would think him crazy to keep doing this – even in his own family, people would think him crazy to bother with this place and these people and these actions anymore but they would be wrong. It was not crazy when the state of the world makes one want to kill everyone responsible. It would be crazy if it didn’t.
With the fullest of his faculties, he judged these gang members guilty and while he could no longer orchestrate their final punishment, it was almost as good to usher them to it. He, better than most, understood that the fires of Hell were real, hungry and would be waiting for them to feast for eternity. In a way, it was almost better this way. They were still damned, but he got to help the innocent in the land of the living. It wasn’t just consolation and validation he offered the just, but deliverance from evil’s persecution.
How could he refuse when they called out to him to protect them and he so could?
He continued to smirk as he wrote on the wall but it quickly faded as one of the children boldly whimpered, breaking the silence further, “Please don’t hurt us no more…”
No more… It sent a shiver down his spine. His eyes returned to the dead gangsters at his feet in further disgust. How could anyone willingly hurt a child?
Sadly, he understood that the most grotesque of instincts were often the most prevalent in the living – be them mortal or immortal. He could find it all around him without even struggling for the thought – his own father had, fourth-fifths of his siblings, even he had, though he was certain he could absolve himself of his restraint/imprisonment of Delaney if his paternal heart would ever accept his justifications. Regardless…
He shook his head and took one of the gangsters’ phones that hadn’t been blown apart by gunfire and dialed 911. As soon as he heard the operator answer he dropped it to the floor and let the young woman on the other end keep asking if there was an emergency. She was now required to send emergency services here once she trailed the GPS location in all cellphones.
The 911 operator’s voice must have mustered up more courage in the brave little boy who pleaded with him before and received no response, “You there? Anyone? You the good guy that explodes bad guys?”
The questioned made Hades regain his smirk as he wheeled around and approached the huddled children. He enjoyed that title “the good guy that explodes bad guys” from the young child much more than anything the newspapers had given him. Bending down, he placed his gloved hand atop the boy’s head and nodded it “yes”.
The boy smiled, “We’re safe.”
He nodded the boy’s head again and then stood once more. There was no more fear in the children. There was no doubt on their faces that they were thusly rescued and not having mind games played on them; they were just too young to consider that it was all a ploy to dash their hopes and break them.
Hades was thankful for that. He was thankful that they weren’t as jaded as he was to even think of that possibility.
All that was left for him to do was wait for the sirens and the emergency personnel. Holding vigil was the only way to ensure that their sincere trust was not misplaced and they would be safe. They would just have to endure being blindfolded and bound a little while longer on the chance he had to slay any more criminals in this home tonight in front of them. But he was certain it wouldn’t be much longer. 911 didn’t mess around when it came to phone calls that lacked responses from cellphones.
But even so, he hoped they would come sooner and it was not just for the comfort of the children. There was something nagging deep in his soul, tempering the sweet satisfaction of murdering the guilty and ensuring their one way ticket to Hell. An ancient feeling he could easily identified but was so out of place…
The sound of the sirens and the explosion of police and EMS racing into the building broke his train of thought and swept the sensation away. That was his cue to leave and slink away under the cover of night and his invisibility. To leave and no longer ponder why this suddenly felt like adultery.
Summary: Hades went out again in the late evening, clearly in a bout of insomnia, and found some gangsters worthy of killing in his stomping grounds. He considers some things.

Last night at 4:38 AM, Emergency Services received a 911 phone call from a cell phone from inside a small two-family home in the area colloquially known as “the Shadowlands”. Miami Police and EMS workers discovered three children who had been missing for a month bound and blindfolded in the front room. First responders also found the grisly remains of five men. Police have identified the men as members of the notorious MS-13 gang.
Authorities believe this is yet another assault committed by the vigilante dubbed by some Miami residents as “The Shadowlands Eradicator” as the words: “All Gangs Out. No Hold Outs Will Be Tolerated” were found written in blood on one of the walls consistent with other crime scenes, despite the fact it was discovered inside a private residence.
One neighbor to the house was not perturbed by this fact and explained, “Everyone around here knew that place was a safe house and a front for the gang. Police would have busted down the door but they didn’t have enough evidence for a warrant or something. The Eradicator doesn’t have to worry about crap like that.”
The lack of procedure and due process, in addition to being an illegal vigilante are the exact reasons Lt. Manuel Santora, head of the Miami Police Department’s Gang Intervention Unit, states he is trying to bring these assaults to an end, despite violent crime being down 80% in the residential community.
The gang MS-13 is one of the main gandland holdouts in the area since the Shadowlands assaults began. Some arrested on drug possession charges and parole violations have told authorities that MS-13 refuses to be “pushed out” and that they refuse to be “cowards like the other gangs. Ultra-violence is part of the day to day” for them.
An unnamed Miami officer commented, “While we will have to arrest whoever this is if we catch him or her, I can’t be overly upset by someone putting some fear in the hearts of gangsters. Maybe if the gangs just clear out, the Eradicator will fade away and never be caught.”
That may be the happy ending the community, plagued by the torment of uncontrolled criminal activity at sunset, longs for.
All three children are reported as being in good spirits but under going further psychological evaluation after their ordeal.
