Who: Hades & Valentine
What: Ditches are fine places to socialize
Where: In a Ditch
When: Backdated technically. Sunday night
Warnings: none
The Gates to the Underworld had been shut and long since disappeared for at least an hour, but Hades still opened his eyes every few seconds to make sure of it. Every few seconds he had to make sure he was back on the surface and not still below. Only then could he close his eyes again.
He had stopped bleeding at least twenty minutes ago, but he still didn't feel like leaving the security and comfort of the deep ditch he had found and thrown himself in. Invisibly, he clawed his hands deeper into the dirt and took yet another breath to calm himself.
That had not gone as planned. The Greek Ogre-Demons had learned tactics... well, better tactics since last he had to fight them. What had he even been thinking? What had he even been trying to do?
Val was out for a jog with Sadie. The doggie (being a Dalmatian) needed a lot of exercise to keep its nerves under control. Besides that, her husband was making sure that she left the house occasionally and got away from the kids for the sake of her sanity.
They had just gotten to a comfortable clip when Sadie veered suddenly. Val was caught off-guard and sprawled into a ditch by the road. Sadie sat on the slope of it, barking cheerfully.
"You're the worst dog ever," she muttered.
Hades opened his eyes instantly on impact. Oh, so many times had he had this fantasy of a beautiful woman just tumbling on top of him from the open sky into the dark deep. It being Valentine was new. “At least I broke your fall, yes?”
Val shrieked at the sudden intrusion of the voice. She scrambled to stand up but found the ground beneath her very soft and yielding. And then Sadie hopped down into the ditch with her and the mystery voice.
Funny, that's kind how all his fantasies ended. With the woman scrambling away from him in horror... His fantasies rarely remained pleasant for him. With a sigh, directed both to the situation and to his own thoughts, he pulled himself up to sitting, holding back the whimper that it almost caused, “Calm down. After all, you're the one who fell on me.”
It took Val another minute to recognize the voice, but she did get there. "Hades?" She grabbed onto her romping dog, pulling Sadie close. "...sorry. You scared me."
“And you fell on me.” Hades rubbed his chest. Not that she had actually caused any of the wounds that were screaming at him now but she hadn't helped them, though he had been able to briefly forget about them in the confusion of having a beautiful woman suddenly on top of him. He would keep that remedy in mind when he got home – and never, ever explain where he got the idea from. “Assume your dog brought you down into this ditch for the visit.”
"Yeah," Val nodded, scritching Sadie behind the ears. "She's the stupidest dog sometimes." She shimmied to get as far away from as she could. It was only right to give him his space since she'd fallen on him. "Why are you in a ditch?"
I'm hiding from everyone who cares about me until my wounds close completely and my bruises look less bad and a ditch sounded like the perfect place. The straight-forward truth sounds crazy. Hades smirked a little, glad to be invisible, not that it kept him from shrugging a little bit. “Am the god of ditches pretty much. Just as natural for me to be here as you to be at a Sonnet-Showdown, no?”
"The ditch is a little strange...even for you," Val grinned, glancing at the source of his voice. "And I would've thought you'd pick a ditch less close to the road." But to each their own. "Did you want me to leave you alone?"
“Sometimes I'm a lazy man. This ditch was here.” And close. His whole thought process about this ditch had come into existence due to it being so close. He hadn't been able to think very clearly when he threw himself into it. Feeling a little better, Hades almost enjoyed the company. Valentine was a pleasant sight and wouldn't overly question circumstances like any of his normal company his solitude found comfort in. “You don't have to go but I doubt this is really your ideal location. Want me to help you out of here?”
"It's okay--my husband says I need to get out more, anyway," Val shrugged, getting as comfortable as she could. "So...the ring was pretty. When do you plan on using it?"
“Wonder if when you're husband said that, he meant 'get out more to a ditch on the side of the road' but it is out.” To think, when he ruled the Underworld, he had a whole beautiful palace to entertain guests that never came. Now on the surface, he was entertaining someone in a ditch. The world would never make sense to him, but the thought sombered his mood. He shook his head to push aside the thoughts of the ruined palace and destroyed gardens of his former realm and tried to focus them on happier things. “The right time. Whenever we have rushed into marriage, it hasn't gone well for us. No reason to rush in and expect something different.”
"Aww, that isn't very romantic," Val whined, putting on a little pout. Still, she shrugged her shoulders, reaching out to rub Sadie's back. "I commend your practicality though. It's good that you want to get it done right, but..."
Not that she could see it but that didn't stop Hades from frowning. That didn't sound good. Maybe he couldn't do marriages correctly at all. Leaning back against one of the dirt walls, he sighed a little, “But?”
"But...well, you say it hasn't gone well...but..." She frowned, trying to put her words together in a polite manner. "Aren't you still together?"
Was that what brought on the 'but'? Hades almost felt foolish for being so overly concerned but he supposed he wasn't on his A-game when he was also thinking about how he was pretty sure he had broken at least two of his ribs. Stupid ogre-demon and its stupid club. If only this was grave ditch. Alas, it was only a ditch with a muse it, which, while nice.... eh, he could live this. “Yes, but you of all people should understand the desire to do a wedding correctly and have a fairy tale type thing. This is try three.”
"That is a nice sentiment. I'll agree. If you need any help planning...once the date has been set of course," Val grinned, pushing herself to her feet. "Did you need help getting out of the ditch?"
If Demeter ever returns to town, I will definitely call you to get this Platinum Wedding this whole thing will be off the ground immediately. I want that bitch invited and front and center. Hades thought as he wickedly grinned and even as he gingerly pulled himself to his feet, that grin remained on his invisible face. Oh, her being there would almost make seeing her again worth it. Almost. “Will keep you in mind. I would be foolish not to” He glanced at the top of the ditch and then at the muse with her dog, “And I think I should be asking you if you need any help to get out of this ditch and not the other way around, Niece.”
"I'll be okay," Val replied, scrambling up the side of the ditch. "I think Freyr will be pretty amused that I'm coming home with dirt all over my clothes..."
Hades shrugged. Part of him could guess why her elf husband would be amused, but the other part of him kept him from thinking too much about it. It wasn't his business. At all. Their private life was their own and he would respect that. Instead, he looked down at the dog, “What about her?”
Val just smirked at the question. "Saaaadie~" She cooed loudly. The dalmatian barked excitedly, leaping up at its mommy. The muse was nearly knocked over, but somehow she kept on her feet. "She's excitable."
“And must have springs in her feet,” Hades added loud enough to be heard from his now lower position. His body ached much less than when he had thrown himself down into the ditch, his breathing had leveled out and his mood had improved. Only one of those things could he accredit to the muse but a third of the success wasn't too bad, he supposed. “Get home safely. The next ditch you fall in may have some terrible troll in it and not just me.”
"Duly noted," Val murmured, getting a good handle on Sadie's leash as she started down the road. She waved over her shoulder. "Goodnight [Uncle]."
“Goodnight, [Niece].” Hades didn't wave. There was no point. He counted to himself as he listened very carefully to the sound of paw falls dragging the muse away in the spirited exuberance that only a young dog could muster. He counted and listened to be sure she was gone before he sank his fingers into the dirt wall of the ditch to begin to pull himself up as well. And then he paused... Why was he climbing out of this ditch? It's not like his car was anywhere near here. He hadn't come here by car... With a sigh, he shook his head and grabbed his key from around his neck. The only way home was back through the Underworld. At least it would heal him further as long as he avoided being on the wrong end of a club again. “Thank you, Valentine, for improving my mood, not you can hear. Gonna need it where I'm going to again...”
Summary: Val falls into a ditch and finds a broody and invisible Hades.
