Who: Hades & Persephone (with Zale)
What: Cool down, Warm Up
Where: Persephone's house
When: Backdated. August 10. Same day as the Zeus/Hades scene
Warnings: fade out. /french/
Persephone settled down boxes of Chinese on the table, carefully opening up each one. She set plates down and glanced at the clock, wondering when Hades would be home with Delaney. "Zale! C'mon down, the food is here!"
Zale came running down the steps, taking two at a time before leaping down the last three, before racing to the sound of his sister's voice. He skidded to a stop before crashing into her and looked around, holding back his minor disappointment at Chinese with grabbing one of the egg rolls out of the bag with a smile. He had been spoiled by months of home cooked meals of the goddess of casseroles and even he understood that. “Where's Uncle Dante?”
Little did either of them know, he was already in the house. It was easy to miss a man when the garage was behind the house and he was incredibly sneaky. He sat on the floor beside Delaney's crib, watching her little eyes close in paternal fascination.
Persephone would have cooked, but she had been worried about beating Hades home and then the sneaky need to be on the lookout for him had overwhelmed her ability to focus on anything other than the number for Chinese. She frowned, glancing back out the window.
"He should be home from work soon. Actually, let me give him a call..." She whipped out her phone, pressing 1 on the speed dial.
His phone rang. Well, played music anyway.
Zale looked around. “Do you hear music?”
Dahlia squinted, eyes slowly training up to the ceiling. "Yes. Yes, I do." She smiled at her brother. "Look, I'm going to go speak with him, help yourself to food, okay?"
Zale nodded and promptly began to rummage to find the fortune cookies.
Hades, on the other hand, shifted to blindly hit silence on his phone. It was only going to disturb Delaney's adorable drifting off to sleep.
Dahlia crept up the stairs, peeking into Delaney's room. Oh shoot. She was almost asleep. But there was Hades. She slipped in as silently as she could, finding a spot near him. She nibbled her bottom lip, unsure of whether or not he wanted her to be there.
“We have a beautiful daughter,” he whispered, feeling her there more than seeing her.
"Yes," she agreed, shooting herself a little closer and daring to reach for his hand. "There's food downstairs and Zale...if you're feeling up to it."
As if by instinct alone, he turned his hand over so his palm would face her, making it ease to take, “In a bit. Currently trapped in her power.”
"Okay," she murmured, leaning in to kiss his cheek before letting go of his hand and trotting back down the stairs. "He says he'll be down in a bit. He's just putting Delaney down for a nap."
Zale nodded, sitting at the table with a big bowl of fried rice in front of him, “Is he okay?”
Dahlia had to smile and shake her head at the sight. Oh growing boys. "Yeah he's fine. He just likes to sit with her until he's sure she's out."
“Then why were you all nervous before?” Zale put the chop sticks down. No matter how many times his uncle showed him how to use them, they didn't work. Instead, he surrendered and grabbed a fork.
"Well he told me he was in a bad mood before, but he's fine now," she shrugged, picking up her chopsticks and snagging a piece of broccoli. "You know he goes through moods."
Zale frowned, “Usually not without reason.”
At the very end of the boy's words, Hades descended that stairs and found his way into the kitchen. “Is that Chinese?” It smelled like Chinese, but Persephone could have ordered from a number of “trendy” places that decided to use similar containers.
"Yes it is," Persephone cooed, snagging herself a dumpling this time. When it came to Chinese food, she was big on foregoing plates for boxes. "Get it while it's still hot."
It also answered his question of whether she had gotten him cold noodles. No. Hades sat down in whatever chair he reached first at the table and grabbed the sweet and sour pork before the spring goddess started picking at it. “Didn't think Chinese food got cold til the next day.”
"It just gets lukewarm," Persephone clarified, returning to the broccoli. "I like cold Chinese food as a matter of fact." She sat herself down next to Hades, and taking the hand holding upstairs as a good sign, she scooted her chair closer to his.
“We could always just heat it up in the microwave...” Zale couldn't help but comment as he poured more fried rice into his bowl. But his real attention was on the monopoly his half sister seemed to have on the broccoli.
And Hades caught that look before hearing the the sound of the chair scooting close to him. Without missing a beat, stabbed a piece of broccoli out of her container, “You can't just have all of it..”
"But I love veggies," Perse whined, snuggling against his shoulder. She reached out for the extra soup crackers she'd gotten, no soup insight. "Mmmm."
With her so close and her preoccupied, Hades snatched the broccoli container and slid it across the table to Zale, “Think fast.”
The boy quickly snagged it with a grin, “Thanks, Uncle.”
"Meanies," Perse murmured, glancing up at Hades before speaking in French. "/are you feeling any better?/"
“/I couldn't get angrier, so yes. I am./” Hades murmured softly in return, focusing his attention on his meal, for the lack of a better place to look.
Zale glanced up at the sound of the French and poured some of the broccoli into his bowl before getting up from the table, “Um, would it be okay if I finish dinner while reading my last book for school?”
Dahlia glanced up at her brother. So much for a family meal... "Of course, that's fine, honey. Just careful that you don't make a mess." Hades didn't seem himself either, so she extradited herself from his chest, grabbing a plate and creating a meal with a sense of order to it.
“Thanks.” Zale smiled at the both of them. It just seemed that they needed time alone more than a family meal. He took his bowl and went up the stairs. Hopefully everything would be okay between them.
Hades glanced up at Zale, suddenly understanding why the boy had made such a retreat. He was a polite and thoughtful boy and once again, Hades didn't know how he was actually the son of Poseidon and Demeter. At all. He put his Chinese on the table and followed Persephone with his eyes, “/What are you doing?/”
Persephone paused to look at Hades, a piece of lo mein dangling from her lips. She blinked, unsure of what answer he was looking for. "/Eating?/"
“/I don't know where I was going with that question, so okay,/” He murmured in reply, shrugging his shoulders, “/I'm sure I wasn't expecting a literal answer./”
"/I'm sorry,/" Persephone answered, turning her head so that her eyes were focused on her plate. "/You said you were in an off mood, and I'm not sure what I should be doing right now./"
“/I'm not angry at you./” Hades counted on his fingers, “/I may be angry at your father, your mother, circumstances, the Fates and a number of global trends, but not you./”
"/But you're angry,/" Persephone spoke softly before shoveling food into her face. Him being angry meant she didn't know if she should be within swatting distance. It used to be that she could comfort him, but now...
Hades answered the unspoken question, “/Come here..../” But then trailed off to give the subtle permission for her to refuse.
Persephone scooted closer again, nuzzling up against his side. "I love you."
At least when she had gone out to hurt him, she knew it and tried to limit how much it would hurt. Suddenly, with all things considered, Hades could actual respect the insight and action. “/Your father just wouldn't catch a hint and leave. Just kept digging a bigger hole./”
"/He has a habit of doing that, I'm afraid,/" Persephone murmured. "/And we, wee gods below the throne, must pick up admits the wreckage of his whims...but it's not always bad./" She grinned up at him, kissing under his chin. "/I married you./"
The kiss did cool the burning anger in his soul. A success if there ever was one. Hades turned slightly and put an arm around his once-wife, ignoring the Chinese food on the table. “/Do you think he seriously doesn't realize he was a bad king and is a bad brother? That he can't take a single moment and look beyond himself?/”
"/He is youngest, by all means boldest.../" Persephone replied, reaching up to run her fingers through his hair. "/It is the source of his power and the biggest point of contention amongst anyone in this family and our king. Bold, brash but powerful./"
Hades softly but cruelly snickered at her words, unaware of how he eased more into her fingers. Zeus was no longer king. He was made even with everyone else. Of course, his brother didn't act like he understood that fact, but Hades could at least enjoy it. Gently, he tugged her more to him, lifting her carefully and sitting her on his lap. “/That's all in the past. Not that I have to forgive him./”
Persephone smiled, hugging onto his neck. "/Nobody expects you to, lover./" She nuzzled his cheek before stealing a kiss.
“/At least you understand,/” He murmured against her lips before pressing his own kiss to them, wrapping her up in his arms. Part of him didn't understand anymore how he had chosen to leave her in Hell, perhaps the answer was all those drugs he had been taking. But now she was an understanding comfort. It felt so foreign but so familiar. “/You know, the Chinese is going to get cold./”
Persephone giggled, hugging onto Hades tightly. "/I already told you I like cold Chinese food./"
Hades stared at her, running his fingers right down her spine as thoughts flooded his mind, “/I officially know everything about you, right? No more surprises?/”
"/It'd be hard to not know something at this point,/" Persephone replied. "Maybe we missed some personal history in the Egypt years, but they were nothing to write home about. All cat worshiping and warm weather and tans."
“Don't like warm weather all that much.” It usually meant some angry sun was trying to burn out his retinas. But her response managed a smile out of him as he picked her up, drawing to his own feet. “But I dislike surprises even more. So, its music to my ears, love.”
"Trust me, Hades...you know me better than anybody else." She gave him an affectionate squeeze. "And I'd like to think I know you pretty well too."
His smile continued to warm as he looked down to her, placing a kiss to her forehead. No surprises, no long lost secrets. She had even paid the price for when she betrayed and hurt him. Hades was pretty sure she was the only one ever to have actually paid the price of justice in such a regard. He walked a few feet away from the kitchen table and then paused, “Okay then. Where am I taking you if you know me pretty well?”
"Well you could take me any number of places," Persephone giggled, eying the counter and glancing upstairs. "But I think I'd most like to go to the greenhouse."
“Not really the answer to my question,” But as Hades hadn't actually decided where he was going to take her before posing it, he would leave the comment there. It was an impossible question. Maybe it was that reason he began walking her outside, “Well, you are doing well so far. The greenhouse is certainly in sight.”
"Of course it is the answer...you want to take me where I want to go," she replied, shrugging her shoulders. "Am I wrong?"
“Suppose not.” After all, he was bringing her to the greenhouse. Carefully, he opened the door and was immediately surrounded by the sweet smell of the many plants she was growing inside, hearty plants considering the long period of time she was away from them. It was a scent that definitely reminded him of the spring goddess in his arms, “Now what am I going to do?”
"Oh I don't know~" She cooed innocently, running her fingers along his cheek. She batted her eyelashes coyly, and the room smelled even stronger of flowers then. "But I want to find out."
Hades tried to ignore that but his breath quickening at it betrayed his attempt. If he squinted hard enough it would almost be like they were in his gardens so long ago. Like walking through that doorway had been a portal. Laying her down beside and partly beneath one of the pomegranate plants, he knelt beside her.
Persephone smiled, her eyes trained on her face as she reached up behind his head. She plucked up a yellow flower and pulled it close, sniffing it for a moment before tucking it behind Hades's ear. She licked her lips and smiled, raising an eyebrow.
Slowly, he lifted his hand, brushing his against hers as he took the little yellow flower from behind his ear but his black eyes didn't leave her. They were locked on her with a predatory glimmer. The flower was dropped to the side, allowed to waft down on its own accord. Hades was much too busy passionately pinning her to the ground with a kiss.
Persephone squeaked, wrapping her arms around his neck. She certainly hadn't been expecting this with Hades in a mood like that. It was the happiest kind of surprise she could've hoped for.
One should never try to ponder how Hades' brain was actually wired. Perhaps it was all a reaction of spite. But that wasn't what drove him now. It was only the sight of the flowers surrounding her and her staring up to him. “[I don't care if my heart or my mind is ready, the ghosts can hold down the fort for a little bit,]” he murmured into her ear, “[Alright?]”
Persephone smiled, butterflies in her stomach. Did he really want this? She wasn't strong enough to raise any objections. "[Alright, my love...]"
Summary: Persephone worries about how Hades will react when he returns home for dinner after her less than encouraging texts to her, but the combination of his daughter, food and her blatant seduction cooled his anger down to a low roar, allowing him to enjoy comforts they both probably needed.
