Who: Perse and the Devil
What: Romantic Plans?
Where: A deserted island (seriously)
When: Valentine's Day
Warnings: Scary scary devil
Persephone frowned, squirming in her chair as she drank her morning coffee. All the thoughts from her head had been banished to the book, and now she was watching Food Network and trying to act casual.
How could one be casual when one could be tortured by the Devil at any moment?
Correction, she had been watching Food Network, trying to be casual. The TV began to flicker and flash, the image of the chef cooking went in and out and all audio disappeared. After a moment, the television simply went black and rose petals began to rain down around her.
Persephone blinked. Well shit. It was Valentine's Day, and this was overpowered, overkill. She pushed a smile onto her face. It was silly and romantic. She had to appreciate that just a little.
“I have candy, too. I had considered making it float but...” The Devil stood behind her now in his normal guise he took with her, actually using a voice to speak to her.
"That would've been a bit much," she replied with a smile and a laugh, glancing backwards at him.
“Considering I was planning to whisk you away to a private little island, yeah. Just a touch.” He placed his fingers along her cheeks, watching her with utmost attention. Slowly, he traced the shape of her face with his forefinger, “I have been so busy lately. Why so many influential countries have their elections all at once, I will never know. But it is Valentine's Day.”
"I didn't know you were into politics," she murmured softly. His touch was so warm.
“Really? Hmm,” Once the tracing of her face was complete, his attention shifted and he brushed his finger along her lips. “For centuries now. The early Christians,” he could not help but roll his eyes at the word, “liked to banter around the phrase 'god of the world and its rulers' in their little letters.”
"Corruption knows no boundaries, I suppose," she murmured, closing her eyes. What plans did he have for her today?
“Government is just corruption...” He smiled a wicked grin. Oh, he had heard that thought. “Close your eyes.”
Persephone did as she was told, only mildly worried.
“Shhh.” He whispered to her ears and her mind as he put her arms around her. In a flash of light easily seen, even with eyes closed, and bolt of heat, they disappeared from the living room and passed through Hell for only a moment. The heat and light were then replaced by the warmth of the sun and the sweet smell of hundreds of flowers in full bloom along with a gentle breeze coming in from the nearby beach. “Open your eyes now.”
Persephone blinked, covering her eyes to adjust to the sudden sun. Once she could focus, all she saw around her were black sand beaches, rolling waves and the most beautiful foliage she'd ever seen. Everything was in full bloom. Her heart leapt up into her throat. And even...with all of this...
She rubbed at her eyes.
“#Happy Valentine's Day#,” he mumured in her mind and sat down, motioning for her to join him.
When she was finally able to get her bearings, Persephone sat down next to the Devil.
“I guess it as a bit of a surprise.” He returned to using a voice, knowing that she had always enjoyed the novelty of it when he did. It was Valentine's Day after all, a day for fun celebration... originally, a day in celebration of the brutal murder of Christian saints and then that sacrifice was forgotten in lieu of flowers and candy. Something he could get behind. “Do you like it?”
"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen..." Persephone said truthfully. But it didn't feel right.
The Devil took a moment to brush her long dark hair from her shoulder, “That doesn't mean you like it though.”
Persephone glanced up at him, reaching up to touch his hair. "I've tried to love you. You know that right?"
“Tried?” The Devil shrugged, “Love does not always come over night.”
"You can't possibly love me," she murmured, trying to reassure herself of this fact.
“Now, now, that isn't very romantic talk,” he murmured in return as he brought her close to him. “#You are my wife. Why do you doubt my feelings?#”
"Because we barely know each other," Persephone explained. "Even after all this time."
“#As if you knew your first husband so quickly.#” There was a soft, almost playful, laughter in her mind as he pulled her down to lay down beside him, “#All this time? Months? What are months for the likes of us?#”
"And you see no reason for my to possibly doubt you?" she asked, resting her head on his chest.
“#True. Hmmm,#” The Devil stroked her hair, curling it around his fingers as he seemed to ponder, “#What do you have more reason for though? Doubt or believe? Has what I done to make you doubt so heavily outweigh what I have done to make you believe?#”
"I guess it's just something that takes time," she murmured, glancing at the beautiful island flowers. "Thank you for this..."
“#You are my wife and mother of my daughter. What else am I supposed to do?#” With a moment of concentration a pair of wings made of flames unfurled at his sides, and then shifted to wrap around them. But they did not burn, they were merely warm. “#I figured later we could go below and I can play my violin for you... I won't play it up here.#”
"Alright dear one," Persephone nodded, making herself comfortable in his embrace. She would have to ride out the tide of her doubts.
“#I guess I have been too hands off if we are having this sort of talk...#” His hand slid down her back slowly as he closed his eyes.
Persephone didn't say anything, instead she nuzzled at his neck. Anything to reassure him.
Funny, it seemed that he was doing much the same with her. Anything to reassure her. A smile snuck across his face, “#Your love will come with time. I told you you are everything I desire, but I also desire your love. It will give me something to work toward.#”
"What if...it doesn't work out?" she murmured, suddenly a little afraid.
His eyes slowly reopened, “#And why would you say that?#”
"My first marriage didn't," she said. "And I loved him."
“#I'm not putting every nymph and soot maid before you. I'm not giving what should be yours to everyone but you. I gave you the child you longed for and the courtship and choice you had been denied. I will fight for you.#” The Devil tipped up her chin so she would look directly at him, “#The two marriages are very different in those regard.#”
Dahlia's face burned with shame. Who could she trust? His arguments made so much sense...
The Devil continued to watch her, his hands gripping hers, “#Sweet wife, what will it take for you to believe me?#”
"I don't know," Persephone sighed, letting herself relax in his embrace. Her husband was different from Hades, and she didn't know who was better suited for her. And she didn't know which one would protect her best. It was terrifying.
“#This is a special gift day to you.#” The Devil scooped her up into his arms as he easily drew to his feet. His flame wings stretched and extended before they slowly flapped and took them off the ground. “#And you are thinking way too much. All buzzing... If you're going to buzz, let's be like the bees and hover over the flowers. I'm sure they want to greet you.#”
Persephone nodded, allowing him to take her on the date that he had planned. Whatever that entailed.
And he did so. Flying her just centimeters over the flowers, so close that they often brushed against her.
"Amazing," she breathed, enjoying the sights of the day. She almost felt bad for doubting him. Almost.
“#Amazing? This is only part of the day for you...#” He projected to her mind as he kissed softly, bringing both sets of feet once more to the ground, amongst all the bloomed flowers. “#Whenever you are ready... I will show and give you sights that this world is unworthy of...#”
"I'm not sure I want to...go down there with all those dead things," she murmured.
“#Oh?#” Even the Devil couldn't hide his surprise with that revelation. He spun her around in his arms and looped his arms around her waist. Bright green eyes peered down at her searching, “#What has made you suddenly afraid of the dead?#”
"It's a happy day, right?" Persephone asked. "I'm happiest in sunshine..."
“#We can wait until sunset then....#” But clearly the Devil's curiosity had been perked. “#I do want to make you happy today.#”
"You're doing a good job," Persephone murmured. "I promise."
“That's my, girl,” The Devil murmured in return, returning to vocal speech as he placed his hand against her cheek, cupping her face gently. “I may be a mind-reader, but sometimes you have to tell your workaholic husband what you need... what you want.”
"I wish we could tell people the truth about us," Persephone murmured softly, glancing up at him.
Was that the problem? The lying? He liked it better when she was laying beside him hatching the lies together. Lightly, he caressed her cheek with his thumb, “#And how would you like to begin that conversation, 'Hello, I married Satan.' You know, as well as I do, that it is not safe for you, and more importantly, for Delaney... But, if you want to...#”
"If you really care for me, there's nothing for my family to worry about, right?" Persephone asked.
“#What do you mean?#”
"You've been kind to me, and none of us can help our nature....in Hell you're Satan, to Christian humans you're a corruptor," Persephone explained. "What does that mean to a Greek? It's not as though we particularly like Christians either...why should my family be afraid of you?"
“#You think your ex-husband would take kindly to me? Do you think they would side with you over him if he did react poorly?#” The Devil released her and crossed his arms over his chest, his wings disappeared as if they never existed. “#I have no fear for myself but for you and my daughter... If you were truly this brave, you would have insisted this months ago...#”
"I've always known Hades to be a very fair man....I can't understand what could have transpired between you two that would cause him to dislike you so fully..." Persephone blinked. "Is it only about the power struggle?"
The Devil laughed in her mind again, but not playfully this time. It was a beautiful, but terrible sound. “#He hasn't quite accepted his place in the new status quo nor does he agree with the management of law and realm. Not that I completely agree with the law part, but that is the short story...#” And then the fallen angel shrugged, “#If you really want to tell them, go on ahead. But things will change...#”
"What's the worst that could happen?" Dahlia asked, her face a sweet smile.
“#The worst?#” The Devil barely had to think, “#They put two and two together and dash your child to the ground and you watch her ichor stream from her skull as she breathes her final breaths.#”
"Hades wouldn't let that happen," she replied just as quickly. Perhaps she shouldn't have.
“#He knows, doesn't he? That's what brought your odd mood on...#”
"He saw the symbols. I had to explain, and he doesn't do well with lies." Luckily, Persephone had gotten better at on the spot lying.
The Devil's eyes narrowed. Lying to the Father of all Lies was dangerous, but if he knew, he didn't especially let on. “#Does he know about Delaney, too?#”
"No," she answered honestly. Frankly, if it weren't for the levatation, she'd be hard-pressed to know who the father was.
“#You better hope she doesn't prove herself otherwise while he's with her then... Like you said, he doesn't do well with lies.#” The Devil drew closer to her again, and even put his lips to her ear, “#You would have destroyed him then. Imagine how he would react? I doubt even you could think of it.#”
Persephone shivered, squeezing her eyes shut. She was scared. She brought her hands to his shoulders.
“#Every lie gets pulled into the light eventually and you turned on that light. It's only a matter of time now before little Delaney has to deal with your decisions. I had hoped she would be older, but you made the choice.#” Even with his terrible words, he put his arms back around her, tenderly smiling down at her.
Persephone frowned, wanting to push away from him but scared to even move. "He won't let anything happen to her...no matter what he finds out."
“#If you say so. I hope for Delaney's sake, you're right.#” Once again, he tipped her face up so he could look her in the eye, “#No matter what, you will always have me.#”
"Can we go home?" She asked, her voice icy. "I think the mood has been sufficiently killed."
“#If you wish. Today is your day. I would close your eyes if I were you.#” He only allowed her a second to do so, before transporting them in reverse with another flash of light and wave of heat, through Hell and then once more in her living room. He brushed her hair back when it was safe to open them. “#If you think its safe, go ahead and tell your family. If you are afraid, continue to lie... if that is still an option to you. They are your family... but no matter what, I will be here. That's what husbands do.#”
Persephone nodded, understanding what he really meant. They were bound by marriage, and he wasn't going to see that dissolved so easily.
“Now what?” The Devil asked as he plopped down on her couch. She seemed to have decided a very different course for this day than he did.
Persephone shrugged. "I didn't have anything in mind..."
“Well, you dashed my plans. I still have that candy for you.” But all he could was shrug as well, not that it kept him from smiling. The Devil didn't seem angry in the least.
"...what kind of candy?" she asked, glancing over at him.
He put his arm along the back of the couch, welcoming her to his side. “Chocolate covered cherries in one of those heart-shaped boxes.”
Dahlia smiled, moving to his side and snuggling close. No need to fight anything today...not when there were bonbons to be had, right?
Summary: The Devil makes plans for Valentine's Day. Persephone is bad at being nonchalant.
